After dominating the world over, Barbiecore reached the runway with Kiara Advani in Falguni Shane Peacock's stellar pink outfit. Against the stroke of lightning, Gaurav Gupta's electrifying collection was complemented by his star muse, Janhvi Kapoor. Ranbir Kapoor was too cool for school in his unique skirt-style trousers for Kunal Rawal. Ishaan Khatter and Sobhita Dhulipala's scintillating runway looks and walks for Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna should have come with a fair warning. Everything that glittered for Rimzim Dadu's show was her stellar "steel-worthy" outfits and a glistening Ananya Panday turning showstopper for her. Disha Patani dolled up for Dolly J in a sequinned silver lehenga with the obvious trend of the season, the mermaid skirt with a slit. Inspired by European architecture but still very Indian at heart, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan looked dreamy in pastel ethnic outfits by Shantnu and Nikhil. Bhumi Pednekar, Athiya Shetty and Vaani Kapoor's runway shows hit a note with fashion aficionados that had something for every kind of fashionista.

The magic of India Couture Week often sets the tone for the festive season. In case it wasn't already very obvious, one of the biggest fashion trends was the return of mermaid skirts, often accompanied by a slit on the side and paired with slinky bralette blouses. Kiara Advani, Bhumi Pednekar, Sobhita Dhulipala, Disha Patani and Ananya Panday led the course of this major fashion comeback. Bralettes doubling up as blouses may not be a rare phenomenon, but it sure is set to be a constant with lehengas for bridal inspirations after Sara Ali Khan and Vaani Kapoor's runway specials for the upcoming season.

Fashion designers often source inspiration from their travels. So it was not surprising to find European influences in ethnic grandeur as seen for Shantnu and Nikhil, Rohit Gandhi and Rohit Khanna and Roseroom by Isha J's shows. Drawing ideas from European architecture, the collection remained as Indian as ever at heart.

Even though showstoppers were absent from designers Tarun Tahiliani, Suneet Varma and JJ Vallaya's shows, they did not lack drama with their majestic lehengas. For many designers, including Suneet Varma, the meticulously crafted outfits were showstoppers in their own right. Suneet Varma's necklace blouses for instance made a convincing case that wearable jewellery makes for a striking festive wardrobe addition. Wearable jewellery for men too brings an extraordinary spin to the usual with Falguni Shane Peacock's bejewelled sehras making a case in point.

Gender fluidity on the runway in India spreads like wildfire. Falguni Shane Peacock presenting a male model in a lehenga was a delight to see. Men's couture as seen on Ishaan Khatter and Ranbir Kapoor proved that gender-fluid styles with skirt-like trousers and a tie-shirt can go mainstream. Androgynous styles ruled the ramp. Structured blazers with lehengas and shararas fused classic with contemporary beautifully at Rajesh Pratap Singh, Rimzim Dadu, Anamika Khanna and Kunal Rawal's shows.

Ritu Kumar's royal comeback to couture with her trademark bohemian aesthetic and zari deserved no less than a regal showstopper and that's what she got with Aditi Rao Hydari in a stunning white lehenga. If boho dreams are made of Ritu Kumar's creations, we hope we keep dreaming.

The fashion world has always been captivated by the mesmerizing blend of tradition and modernity unique to India. The India Couture Week 2023 was no exception.
