"Religious Sentiments": Indore Temple Allegedly Blocked Civic Body Action

Thirty-six people were killed when a structure at a temple in Madhya Pradesh's Indore collapsed yesterday. The stepwell roof at the Beleshwar Mahadev temple broke due to the sheer weight of the crowds on Ram Navami. A havan was being performed when the incident happened.

An NDTV investigation has revealed the tragedy could have been averted had the Indore Municipal Corporation acted on complaints filed by residents. The tragedy hit many families hard, with some losing more than one member.

Documents that NDTV accessed clearly show the temple area that collapsed was an illegal structure and the Indore Municipal Corporation had marked the cover of the stepwell for demolition last year.

But the municipal body had to back down after the temple trust warned them religious sentiments would be hurt.

NDTV has accessed one more letter issued by the then Indore Development Authority (IDA) chief in 1985 - a planning map of the area which has no mention of any temple. The map shows this area was to be developed as a children's park.

In 1985, the place where the temple is located was earmarked as "Sneh Vatika" for children under a scheme of the IDA by the then chief authority chief Harsh Mander.

The stepwell, however, is 200 years old. It was covered with four iron girders, a thin layer of concrete and tiles incapable of holding the weight of the crowd that gathered to offer puja on Ram Navami.

The walls had come up around the floor. A tin shed was set up as the roof of the temple. People gathered at Shri Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple for a havan (ritual) did not know that the ground beneath their feet hid a deep well amid rusty iron grills.

The temple trust denied any illegal construction and alleged the authorities were trying to hurt religious sentiments.

The Indore Municipal Corporation had given notice to the temple trust twice - in April 2022 and January 2023. In the second notice to the temple trust, the municipal body said its previous reply was "unacceptable".

"You have been directed to remove the complete construction in seven days of receiving this letter, else IMC (Indore Municipal Corporation) will remove the encroachment/illegal construction under Section 307 of the Municipal Corporation Act 1956 and under Section 7(3) of the Land Development Rules 2012," the municipal body said. It did not mention anything about the stepwell.

The temple trust again denied any illegal construction and alleged the authorities were trying to hurt religious sentiments.

Kishore Kodwani, who lives in the area, pointing at the crammed space, told NDTV, "Why was this shed was not removed? It would have easy to use a bulldozer... Most of the stepwells in this area have been covered. In fact one of the temples is inside a community hall built by the IMC itself. All these structures have political patronage. No official will dare to take action against them."

He said that as per government records, there are 1,153 community gardens in Indore, out of which 875 gardens were physically verified and it was found that there were 63 temples and 113 overhead water tanks of the IMC constructed on them.

Cabinet minister Tulsi Silawat told NDTV they have ordered a probe into the matter and are also looking at the municipal notice. "We have ordered an enquiry. Nothing can be so sad. If anyone has encroached upon any stepwell, we will take action. Nobody will be spared," the minister said.

A police case has been filed against two officials of the temple trust. Two municipal officials have been suspended for not removing illegal construction. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.

Indian Family Found Dead After Trying To Illegally Cross US-Canada Border

Six people from two families -- one of Romanian descent with Canadian passports, the other from India -- were found dead in a marsh near the Canada-US border after trying to cross illegally into the United States, police said Friday.

Their bodies were discovered late Thursday near a capsized boat belonging to a missing man from the Akwesasne Mohawk community, local deputy police chief Lee-Ann O'Brien told a news conference.

"The six individuals are believed to be from two families, one of Romanian descent and the other believed to be citizens of India," she said, adding that they include five adults and one child under the age of three.

"All are believed to have been attempting illegal entry into the US from Canada," she said.

O'Brien added that a second infant whose passport was recovered from one of the bodies appears to also be missing and police dive teams were continuing to search.

The Mohawk tribal territory straddles the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario, and the US state of New York.

The first body was found during an aerial search of the area.

Authorities are waiting on autopsy as well as toxicology test results to determine the cause of death.

O'Brien noted a recent "increase in people passing through Akwesasne gaining entry into the US," with 48 crossings since the start of the year.

Once landing on the US side, they are typically picked up on shore and transported by vehicle into New York State, she said.

Noida Woman Found Buried, Dogs Nibbling On Body: Cops

The body of a married woman was found buried in a vacant plot in Greater Noida with dogs nibbling on it Friday, a fortnight after her brother approached police fearing her death by her in-laws over dowry.

Police said they had lodged an FIR on March 15 based on the brother's complaint and are probing the case. However, a police official said the charge of "dowry death" does not stand in cases where marriages outlast seven years.

The body of Sarita (26) was found in Sector 155, Noida, by locals who spotted dogs nibbling on what appeared to be a human body buried shallowly in the ground, a day after intense rains and thunderstorms.

"When the locals went near, they saw a woman's cloth after which they alerted the local Knowledge Park police station," the official said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Ashok Kumar Singh said the police immediately reached the spot and the body was exhumed.

"The brother of the deceased had lodged an FIR on March 15 under IPC sections 365 (abduction), 498A (husband or the relative of the husband of a woman, subjects such woman to cruelty) and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act against her husband and six relatives," Ashok Kumar Singh said.

The forensic team has been roped in for investigation, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of the death and further legal proceedings are underway, he said.

"Raids are being conducted to arrest those named in the FIR," the additional DCP said.

In the FIR, Sarita's brother Narender Bhati, a resident of Tusyana village, has stated that his sister was being tortured and harassed over additional dowry by her husband and in-laws.

He said his family had spent Rs 10 lakh and given a motorcycle to Sarita's husband Joginder when they got married in 2015, but the in-laws taunted her regularly over dowry. He said he had approached the police in March 2021 also but the matter was mediated and brought to a compromise by elders of the community.

In his complaint, Narender Bhati said since March 8, 2023, Sarita's phone was unreachable and when he inquired, her sister-in-law said she had "run away".

"However, we are sure that my sister has been killed by her in-laws. Hence, I request the police to find her body and take necessary action against the suspects," the brother stated.

On Friday, police said they have included IPC Section 302 (murder) in the case.

No arrest has been made in the matter so far but efforts are underway to nab the accused, police added.

Manipur Sets Up Population Commission To Identify "Illegal Immigrants"

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday said his government has set up a State Population Commission to identify "illegal immigrants", adding the government was ready to implement the National Register Of Citizens (NRC) once it gets the approval from the central government.

"We need the Centre's approval for NRC to be implemented in the state but with the enactment of the population commission we will be able to detect legal and illegal residents," Mr Singh said.

The announcement comes days after Manipur's capital Imphal witnessed massive protests against the government's alleged "delaying tactics" in implementing the citizens' register to keep in check the surge in the population of illegal immigrants.

Earlier this week, student groups along with civil society organisations clashed with the police while taking out a march to the chief minister's official residence.

The protesters alleged that the rising influx of outsiders from across state borders and neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh were a threat to the indigenous Manipur population, affecting their identity, culture and economy. They demanded the state government detect and deport such illegal immigrants.

Last year, the state cabinet had approved the establishment of the Manipur State Population Commission after the state Assembly adopted a resolution moved by JD(U) legislator Kh Joykishan.

In Indore Temple Tragedy, Municipal Body's Last Year's Notice Gives Clues

Fourteen people were killed when the roof of a stepwell collapsed at a temple in Madhya Pradesh's Indore today. The stepwell roof at the Beleshwar Mahadev temple broke due to the sheer weight of the crowds on Ram Navami. A havan (ritual) was being performed when the incident happened.

Sources have said the tragedy could have been averted had the Indore Municipal Corporation acted on the complaints filed by residents.

The temple is managed by a private trust. It is located at Sneh Nagar, one of the oldest residential colonies in Indore.

On Ram Navami, the havan was being performed on a platform of the temple, which was actually a concrete slab covering a stepwell. It wasn't strong enough to hold the weight of 30-40 people.

Suddenly, the roof collapsed, plunging the devotees into the 40-feet-deep stepwell with water up to 9 feet.

NDTV has accessed a copy of the notice issued to the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple trust in April 2022, saying the commissioner has received a complaint of encroachment on the park-cum-garden.

Residents also said the park was encroached first by building a water tank and then by building a temple on the stepwell. Another temple is being allegedly built close to this existing one by encroaching the same land, the complaint said.

The temple trust secretary replied the same month denying any encroachment on the park-garden. The trust called the municipal body's notice an interference in religious matters, which would hurt sentiments as the temple was 100 years old.

After the incident today, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the families of those who died in the incident. He has also ordered a magisterial probe.

Those injured will be given Rs 50,000 compensation and their treatment will be paid by the state government. Further, ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund would be given to the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each to the injured people.

"Going To Other Country To Run Down India": Veep's Dig At Rahul Gandhi

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday cautioned against a "virtual intense warfare" on India's integrity by well-orchestrated global machinery and said their narratives are disseminated in such a high decibel that "activities of Goebbels pale into insignificance".

Addressing Network 18's Rising India Summit, he also said it was "unfortunate" that "legally sanctified crusade" against corruption is sought to be combated by partisan stance and individual concerns.

How can the issue of corruption be seen from political prism, he wondered.

His remarks came in the backdrop of allegations by Opposition leaders that the government was targetting them using central investigation agencies.

Mr Dhankhar said India is proud of its judicial system.

"Where on planet you'll get a Supreme Court which can act with lightening speed and grant relief when someone is accused of defamation? Where will you get a Supreme Court which will sit overtime ... the chief justice has unimpeccable credentials with global image," he said.

He asserted that no one in the world "has legitimacy or credentials to lesson us on this aspect".

The vice president's remarks came in the wake of Germany saying it has 'taken note' of Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from Lok Sabha.

The issue led to a fresh political slugfest here on Thursday with the BJP accusing the Congress of "inviting foreign powers" to interfere in internal matters.

The BJP attack came after senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh thanked the German foreign ministry and Richard Walker, Chief International Editor of Deutsche Welle, for "taking note of how democracy is being compromised in India through the persecution of Rahul Gandhi".

Sharing a screenshot of Mr Singh's tweet, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said, "Thank you Rahul Gandhi for inviting foreign powers for interference into India's internal matters." People, the vice president cautioned, need to be cognizant of "virtual intense warfare against India's integrity by a well-orchestrated "global machinery functioning within and outside country".

He said there were "sinister forces within and outside" working with pernicious agenda to sully and downsize India's growth trajectory, to run down its democratic institutions and rundown the nation's success.

Mr Dhankhar said "an entire ecosystem" was working to handicap India's growth.

"Attacking India's legitimacy as nation state, its constitutional institutions including the Parliament is becoming favourite pass time of even to some of us," he said.

He hoped people will check such tendencies.

He felt an intense assault on India's values, integrity and its institutions was emanating from well maintained incubators.

"Such orchestrated narratives are disseminated in high decibel by section of media and intelligentsia that activities of Goebbels pales into insignificance," he said.

Goebbels was the propaganda minister of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

In an apparent dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's democracy remarks made in the UK, Mr Dhankhar said one will not find a parallel in the world where people holding positions of power "would go to other country to run down their own country. We all need to reflect on this".

Congress, HD Kumaraswamy's Party Struck A Deal: Basavaraj Bommai

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said today that the Congress and HD Kumaraswamy's Janata Dal Secular have struck a deal for the assembly elections to be held in the state on May 10. The agreement was made in Hyderabad, he said. The allegation has been rejected by Mr Kumaraswamy.

The Chief Minister's comments came in the backdrop of the Election Commission's announcement of the poll date for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Bommai claimed the Congress has been pleading with the BJP MLAs to come and join the party.

Responding to a query on the Congress charge that there was an understanding between the BJP and the JD(S), the Chief Minister said: "There is nothing of that sort. In fact, there was a meeting in Hyderabad between the Congress leaders and the JD(S), according to my information. A deal has been stuck there between them."

Mr Bommai said the process of releasing BJP candidates' list for the assembly polls will begin after a week.

Mr Kumaraswamy took objection to Mr Bommai's statement. "I demand that the Chief Minister disclose the name of the leaders who met in Hyderabad and the place where the meeting took place," he said.

The JD(S) chief said he found the Chief Minister's allegations too trivial to respond to. Both Congress and the BJP have called the JD(S) a "B team" of the other. The two national parties had nothing else to say about the JD(S), he added.

"We have decided to contest all 224 assembly segments. We did not align with anybody. We are confident that we will form government on our own. There is no question of joining hands with any party," Mr Kumaraswamy said.

Supreme Court Clears 5,000 Crores From SEBI-Sahara Fund To Repay Depositors

The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed a plea by the Centre seeking allocation of Rs 5,000 crore out of Rs 24,000 crore deposited by the Sahara group with market regulator Sebi to repay dues of the depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies.

The direction came on an application filed by the Centre in a PIL by a person named Pinak Pani Mohanty, who sought a direction to pay the amount to the depositors who invested in several chit fund companies and Sahara credit firms.

A bench of justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar noted that the amount was lying in the "Sahara-SEBI Refund Account" unutilised.

The top court said the prayer sought in the present application seems to be reasonable and which shall be in the larger public interest and interest of the genuine depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies.

"Out of the total amount of Rs. 24,979.67 crore lying in the 'Sahara-SEBI Refund Account', Rs. 5000 crore be transferred to the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies, who, in turn, shall disburse the same against the legitimate dues of the depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies, which shall be paid to the genuine depositors in the most transparent manner and on proper identification," the bench said.

The top court also directed that entire disbursement process will be monitored by former top court judge R Subhash Reddy with the assistance of advocate Gaurav Agarwal, who has been appointed as amicus curiae to assist Justice Reddy as well as the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies.

"The manner and modalities for making the payment is to be worked out by the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies in consultation with Justice Reddy and Agarwal.

"Rs. 15 lakhs per month be paid to Justice R Subhash Reddy, Former Judge of this Court and Rs. five lakhs per month be paid to Gaurav Agarwal, learned Amicus Curiae towards their honorarium," the bench said.

The top court further directed that the amount be paid to the respective genuine depositors of the Sahara Group of Cooperative Societies not later than nine months from today.

The balance amount thereafter will be again transferred to the Sahara-SEBI refund account, it said.

The Centre had sought money from the SEBI-Sahara Sahara-Sebi escrow account that was formed after the top court in August 2012 directed two Sahara firms -- Sahara India Real Estate Corporation Limited (SIRECL) and Sahara Housing India Corporation Limited (SHICL) -- to refund investors.

"New Innovations...": Rohit Sharma On 'Impact Player' Rule In IPL

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday backed the new "impact player" rule that will come into force in the upcoming Indian Premier League T20 tournament. The regulation will allow a substitute to come in to bat and bowl, but he can only be an Indian unless there are fewer than four overseas players in a team. "It's interesting to have new innovations coming into the game," Rohit told reporters before the IPL season starts on Friday. "Only time will tell what happens and how the team will cope with this new rule, but I like the idea of an impact player coming in and changing your team after the toss."

He said five-time IPL winners Mumbai will "luckily" be able to see how other teams use the new rule since four other matches will be played before their opening game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday.

Other innovations include captains being allowed to announce their XI after the toss -- which decides which team bats first -- and then nominate an impact player from among the five substitutes listed with the playing XI.

Mumbai's new head coach Mark Boucher also welcomed the idea of changing the team after the toss, saying it will be "quite influential". "Especially in India the dew plays a big part if you are playing in night time," the South African said.

Other new rules include teams being able to review umpires' decisions on no-balls and wides using the computerised Decision Review System.

Man Held Hostage By Co-Workers At Gurugram Office Over Unpaid Loan: Cops

Four employees of a finance company here have been arrested for allegedly holding their colleague hostage as he was unable to return a portion of the money borrowed from them, the Gurugram police said Tuesday.

The accused also demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion from his father over the phone.

Yogesh, the victim, was freed after his father reached along with police at the office.

According to the complaint filed by Bhan Singh, a resident of Khatiwas village in Jhajjar district, his son Yogesh works at a finance company office in Sector 14.

Yogesh called his father on Monday morning and claimed that he was kidnapped and the suspects were demanding Rs 5 lakh.

"My son called me many times and asked me to transfer Rs 5 lakh and he shared an account number with an Indian bank. I was surprised and did not transfer any money in the account and informed the police on dial 112," Bhan Singh said in the complaint.

A police team conducted a raid and rescued Yogesh from the pantry of the office. Later Yogesh filed a police complaint.

"In the same office Abhimanyu, Harish, Preetam and Narender also work with me. Harish had given me Rs 42,000 and I returned it to his account in the morning. Similarly, I also transferred Rs 40,000 to Abhimanyu's account on Sunday and Rs 29,000 on Monday. They, however, held me hostage in the office pantry and asked me to return the rest money.

"I asked them for some time but they clearly said I should bring the money to the office today itself otherwise I will not be allowed to go anywhere and then I called my father", Yogesh was quoted as saying in his complaint.

The police detained all four from the spot and took them to the police station.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against the four under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 384 (extortion) of the IPC at sector 14 police station and police arrested all four accused on Monday night.

"All the four accused were arrested and later let off on police bail after they joined the investigation. Further probe is underway," said Inspector Krishan Kant, SHO of Sector 14 police station.

Elon Musk Says Bill Gates' Understanding Of AI Is "Limited"

Billionaire Elon Musk took a dig at fellow billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on his knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI). He asserted that Mr Gates just has a "limited" understanding of AI.

This was in response to a tweet by Sandy Kory, who praised the leadership of Mr Gates at Microsoft and his approach towards AI. "'I'd been meeting with the team from OpenAI since 2016..." --from Bill Gates' essay The Age of AI Has Begun. It's big when someone like Gates is so bullish on AI. Also notable that MSFT has been tracking this so closely for so long," he said.

Mr Kory was citing a long, 3,639-word essay by the billionaire titled "The age of A.I. has begun", which he wrote on his blog. He wrote about how humanity was awaiting another major revolution. Mr Gates discussed the potential impact of AI on employment, healthcare and education.

"As computing power gets cheaper, GPT's ability to express ideas will increasingly be like having a white-collar worker available to help you with various tasks. Microsoft describes this as having a co-pilot. Fully incorporated into products like Office, AI will enhance your work-for example by helping with writing emails and managing your inbox," the blog read.

Responding to the same, the Twitter CEO said, "I remember the early meetings with Gates. His understanding of AI was limited. Still is."

According to a report in Fortune, Mr Musk started working with OpenAI in 2015. He was one of the company's earliest investors, which is a probable reason why he attended "early meetings" with the Microsoft co-founder. He left the company in 2018 due to potential conflicts of interest arising from Tesla's own artificial intelligence research.

Scientists Find "Reservoir" Containing "Substantial Quantities" Of Water On Moon

Researchers have discovered water trapped in tiny beads spread across the surface only the Moon, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience. It is based on samples of the lunar surface brought back by China's Chang'e 5 mission. The beads embedded in the surface contained "substantial quantities" of water, the scientists said.

The samples were collected in December 2020 and researchers saw microscopic droplets trapped in minerals in them. They said the discovery may help in better understanding of the Earth's neighbour and space missions that could use it as a habitat.

According to scientists, the beads are crucial to the lunar surface's water cycle.

For years, it was believed that Moon is dry but space missions in the last few decades found water trapped inside the surface.

However, it is still unclear exactly how water will behave once it reaches the Moon. Some research has shown that the water in vapourised form fluctuates throughout the day and disappears into space, which implies that the soil should contain some kind of storage.

According to experts, the beads are made when an asteroid strikes the moon's surface and produces molten droplets. These droplets then freeze and mix with the soil and dust. As per their calculations, the impact beads that are dispersed around the surface of the moon may be storing up to 270 billion tonnes of water, which they call a huge "reservoir".

The paper said, "The impact glass beads preserve hydration signatures and display water abundance profiles consistent with the inward diffusion of solar wind-derived water."

It is to be noted that the authors speculate about several potential sources that may have "contributed" to the water source, including solar wind implantation, outgassing of volatiles during lunar volcanism, deposition of volatile-bearing pyroclastic deposits and minerals and delivery by impacts of comets and asteroids," even though the precise origins of the lunar surface water are still "largely unknown".

Planetary Scientist Sen Hu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Geology and Geophysics, a co-author of the study told Al-Jazeera, "Water is the most sought-after commodity for enabling sustainable exploration of planetary surfaces. Knowing how water is produced, stored and replenished near the lunar surface would be very useful for future explorers to extract and utilise it for exploration purposes."

Drunk Men Allegedly Scaled Delhi Women's College Wall, Harassed Students

Students at Delhi University's Indraprastha College for Women alleged that some men scaled the institute's boundary walls during a fest on Tuesday and "harassed several students".

Police have registered an FIR under sections 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and and 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested seven people, they said.

An All India Students' Association (AISA) activist alleged that the men were heard chanting "Miranda, IP dono hamara (Miranda House and Indraprastha College both are ours)" and "Miranda nahi chhoda to IP bhi nahi chhodenge (We didn't leave Miranda, we won't leave IP either)".

In October, some students of Delhi University's all-women Miranda House College alleged that several men scaled the boundary walls and the gates during an open Diwali fest on campus and indulged in "cat-calling and sexist sloganeering".

The AISA's Delhi University unit secretary and former Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW) student Anjali shared purported photos and videos of the incident.

AISA activists and students of IPCW protest after the incident.

In the photo, four men are seen standing near the IPCW boundary wall while another is scaling the wall.

The video clip shows the police asking the college students to vacate the premises.

"Today, IPCW's fest was going when drunk men climbed the walls, forcefully entered the campus and harassed gender minorities. Men were chanting 'Miranda IP dono hamara', 'Miranda nahi chhoda to IP bhi nahi chhodenge'," Anjali tweeted.

Another student alleged, "Miscreants entered the IPCW fest today and harassed several women students, injuring one. Delhi Police has simply escorted the goons out. We demand their immediate arrest." The police said there was an excess crowd of students near the college gate during the fest.

Around 3 pm, some overzealous students started to enter the college in a hurry. In the process, there was heavy pressure on the gates and some students fell down, they said.

BRS Slams BJP As Its Lawmakers Share Stage With Bilkis Bano Case Convict

The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi in Telangana has strongly denounced the BJP after a convict in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case shared stage with lawmakers of the party at a government event in Gujarat.

In a tweet, BRS MLC Kavitha said, "Bilkis Bano Rapist openly shares stage with BJP's MPs and MLAs. What have we become as a community that perpetrators of heinous crimes against women are being celebrated and given a platform while the victims plead for justice. India is watching!"

Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao, brother of Kavitha, also attacked the BJP.

"Welcome to #AmritKaal. Balatkaar Justification Party and it's Brazen embrace of these rapists is a true reflection of their mindset," Rama Rao tweeted.

One of the men convicted for the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and murder of her family members, freed last year under an outdated remission policy of Gujarat, shared the stage with BJP MP Jaswant Bhabhor and his MLA brother Shailesh Bhabhor at a government event held at Limkheda in Dahod district.

6 Men Allege Custodial Torture By Cops In Tamil Nadu

A group of men in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelvelli district have alleged custodial torture by an IPS officer. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered and the officer in question has been put on "compulsory wait, pending inquiry".

The alleged torture is said to have taken place 10 days ago at the Ambasamudram police station. The men -- five shop keepers and an auto driver who have been accused in an assault case -- are now out on bail.

The men alleged that Assistant Superintendent of Police Balveer Singh "crushed the testicles" of a man, despite knowing he is newly married. Five of the men say they had their teeth broken. The officer, they allege, had filled their mouth with gravel and then punched them on the cheek.

One of them, Mariappan, is "bed-ridden and in a critical condition" said Chellappan, another man in the group. One of them showed a half-healed scar on his shoulder, claiming it to be a relic of the torture.

The officer had changed into t-shirt, shorts and gloves before administering the third degree, the men allege. "He tortured us even as two cops, including a gunman, held our hands," Chellappan added.

The allegations were widely circulated on social media. Speaking to NDTV, Tirunelveli Collector KP Karthikeyan said, "I got the complaint first from the District Superintendent of Police. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry".

The whistle blowers say the police had intimidated them, directing them to maintain silence about the torture. Saying they fear for their lives, they have sought government intervention.

The officer concerned and the ruling DMK are yet to comment on the allegations.

The incident brings back memories of the death of a father and son (Jayaraj and Benicks) after alleged torture by cops at the Sathankukam police station in 2020, when the AIADMK was in power. The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the case.

"BJP Protected Your Interests": Karnataka Chief Minister On Quota Protests

Agitating members of the Banjara community on Monday targeted BJP strongman and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's house in Shikaripura town of this district and resorted to stone-pelting, injuring some policemen during a protest against the internal reservation for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) announced by the state government.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in the town.

Reacting to the incidents, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai saw Congress hand behind the violence.

"Local Congress leaders are instigating people. The Congress is unable to digest the social justice done to every community and it resorted to inciting violence. Banjara community should not fall for any hearsay," he told reporters.

Police used batons to disperse the large number of protesters which included women. Some members of the Banjara community, who are also known as Lamani or Lambani, were injured.

Police were taken by surprise as the agitators, most of them youths milled around Yediyurappa's house and resorted to stone-pelting, damaging some window panes.

Sensing the situation going out of control, additional police forces were summoned to the area.

The agitators vented their anger, alleging that "less" reservation was given to the 'Scheduled Caste-Touchables', to which the Banjara community belongs.

The Karnataka Cabinet had last week decided to introduce internal reservation amongst the SCs.

After hiking reservation for the Scheduled Castes from 15 per cent to 17 per cent, the government announced that 6 per cent reservation would be given to SC left sub-category, 5.5 per cent to SC right, 4.5 per cent to Touchables and one per cent to others.

The state government also wrote to the Centre recommending that the proposal be included in the ninth schedule of the Constitution.

Appealing to the leaders of Banjara community to exercise caution, Chief Minister Bommai clarified that the government implemented the cabinet sub-committee recommendation and not the Sadashiva Commission recommendations.

"They (Lambanis) have apprehension that they will be removed from the SC list. It was me who ordered that Bovi, Lamani, and other communities such as Korcha and Korma be retained in the SC list. There is no question of removing them. Hence, an order has been passed and sent to the central government. There is no need to fear," Basavaraj Bommai said.

He further clarified that the SC reservation for the 'touchables' has been increased from 3 per cent to 4.5 per cent.

"We have fulfilled their demands. I want to tell the Banjara community leaders that there is no confusion about it. We (BJP government) have protected your community's interests. We have distributed 2.5 lakh 'Hakku Patra' to those residing in Lamani Tandas (hamlets). So, this is in your favour only," the Chief Minister explained.

Mr Bommai said Yediyurappa had constituted the Tanda (Lamani hamlet) Development Corporation and given all the facilities to the Tandas in Shivamogga district.

"There should not be any room for violence. If there is any issue, then it can be resolved by sitting across the table," he said.

Sharply criticising the Congress, the Chief Minister said it was highly condemnable to "create unrest in the society for political gain".

Criminal Exploitation Of ChatGPT Is Coming, Europol Warns

"The potential exploitation of these types of AI systems by criminals provides a grim outlook," The Hague-based Europol said.

Europol's new "Innovation Lab" looked at the use of chatbots as a whole but focused on ChatGPT during a series of workshops as it is the highest-profile and most widely used, it said.

Criminals could use ChatGPT to "speed up the research process significantly" in areas they know nothing about, the agency found.

This could include drafting text to commit fraud or give information on "how to break into a home, to terrorism, cybercrime and child sex abuse," it said.

The chatbot's ability to impersonate speech styles made it particularly effective for phishing, in which users are tempted to click on fake email links that then try to steal their data, it said.

ChatGPT's ability to quickly produce authentic sounding text makes it "ideal for propaganda and disinformation purposes, as it allows users to generate and spread messages reflecting a specific narrative with relatively little effort."

ChatGPT can also be used to write computer code, especially for non-technically minded criminals. Europol said.

"This type of automated code generation is particularly useful for those criminal actors with little or no knowledge of coding and development," it said.

An early study by US-Israeli cyber threat intel company Check Point Research (CPR) showed how the chatbot can be used to infiltrate online systems by creating phishing emails, Europol said.

While ChatGPT had safeguards including content moderation, which will not answer questions that have been classified harmful or biased, these could be circumvented with clever prompts, Europol said.

AI was still in its early stages and its abilities were "expected to further improve over time," it added.

"It is of utmost importance that awareness is raised on this matter, to ensure that any potential loopholes are discovered and closed as quickly as possible," Europol said.
