Forest Officer Shares Video Of Tiger Making Way For Herd Of Elephants

It's true tigers are apex predators but even they don't like to mess with elephants. A video shared by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda shows a tiger making way for a herd of elephants in a jungle.

The video shows a group of elephants walking down a forest path, as soon as the tiger spots the elephants, the big cat sits down and waits for the herd to pass. The herd advances slowly, catching sight of the big cat but seemingly unconcerned about it.

Along with the video, the caption reads, "This is how animals communicate & maintain harmony... Elephant trumpets on smelling the tiger. The king gives way to the titan herd."

Watch the video here:

The location of the undated video is not known. Since being posted, the video has collected over 12,000 views on Twitter and several reactions from netizens.

"What an encounter. Tiger gives due respect to the mighty land mammal," a user commented.

"What a lovely sighting. Loved how the tiger paved the way for the herd," another user commented.

"More than Give Way, The King in fact seemed more interested in checking out if he could snag an unwary Little Titan," the third user joked.

"Wow! That was an incredible sighting," the fourth wrote.

The video was originally posted by Vijetha Simha, a wildlife photographer on Instagram.

In the wild, tigers usually prey on large or medium-sized mammals like deer, monkeys and boars. Instances of tigers hunting full-grown elephants are rare, but not unheard of.

Man, 40, Arrested For Marrying 11-Year-Old Girl In Bihar

A 40-year-old man was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for marrying an 11-year-old girl in Bihar's Siwan district, police said on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Mahendra Pandey.

In this regard, Siwan Superintendent of Police Shailesh Kumar Sinha said, " Accused Mahendra Kumar has been arrested under the POSCO Act. The minor girl has been sent for medical examination. Further investigation is underway".

The mother of the minor girl alleged that the accused Mahendra Pandey had forcefully married her daughter due to non-payment of a loan.

However, accused Mahendra Pandey denied the aforementioned allegations that it is a trap set by the mother of the girl to extract money from him.

"I got married with the consent of the girl and her mother. Now the girl's mother is blackmailing me. She started demanding money. There is no kind of money transaction between us. I am trapped. Some media persons are spreading false news," he said.

The minor girl Sandhya Kumar also said that her mother is implicating the accused Mahendra Pandey in a false case.

"Both of us got married with the consent of my mother, we want to stay together. Earlier my mother had got everything done, now she is trapping both of us," the minor girl said.

After receiving the complaint from the mother of the minor girl, police registered a case at Mairwa police station and arrested the accused Mahendra Kumar under the POSCO act.

UK's Rishi Sunak To Recite Bible Verse At King Charles' Coronation

Rishi Sunak will read from the biblical book of Colossians at the Coronation of King Charles III in keeping with the recent tradition of British Prime Ministers giving readings at State occasions, the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury revealed as part of the official Liturgy for the religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey here on May 6.

Rishi Sunak, Britain's first Prime Minister of Indian heritage and a practicing Hindu, reading from a biblical book will resonate with the multi-faith theme being struck for the Christian ceremony.

Lambeth Palace, the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury - Reverend Justin Welby, said that members of other faith traditions will play an active role in the service for the first time.

"The Archbishop of Canterbury has selected a new Epistle for this Coronation, which will be Colossians 1:9-17. This passage has been chosen to reflect the theme of service to others, and the loving rule of Christ over all people and all things, which runs through this Coronation Liturgy," Lambeth Palace said.

"Following recent tradition of British Prime Ministers giving readings at State occasions - as Head of the host Nation's government - this will be read by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak," it said.

By longstanding tradition, the Archbishop of Canterbury authorises a new Liturgy - or the form according to which a public religious worship takes place - for every Coronation. The three oaths the King at the heart of the service remain unchanged, including the promise to maintain "the Protestant Reformed Religion".

The overall theme of the Liturgy is "Called to Serve", which is intended to reflect the commitment that the King will make to serve God and the people of the United Kingdom.

"I am delighted that the service will recognise and celebrate tradition, speaking to the great history of our nation, our customs, and those who came before us. At the same time, the service contains new elements that reflect the diversity of our contemporary society," said Welby.

His office said the service has been designed to reflect the changes in the UK since Charles' mother Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, the character of Britain as it is today, and the Church of England's role in contemporary society. As one of the newer elements, the 74-year-old monarch will pray aloud in the Abbey using words specially written for the occasion that reflect the "duty and privilege of the Sovereign to serve all communities".

Lambeth Palace confirmed that the Presentation of the Regalia will be made by Members of the House of Lords and for the first time, some of the items which have no Christian meaning or symbolism will be presented by peers who belong to different faith traditions: Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism.

Buckingham Palace had previously confirmed that Lord Narendra Babubhai Patel, 84, will represent the Hindu faith and hand over the Sovereign's Ring to Charles. While Lord Indrajit Singh, 90, will represent the Sikh faith and present the Coronation Glove, Lord Syed Kamall, 56, of Indo-Guyanese heritage, will represent the Muslim faith and present the Armills or a pair of bracelets.

"At the end of the procession at the close of the service, before His Majesty proceeds to the Gold State Coach, the King will receive and acknowledge a spoken greeting delivered in unison by Representatives from Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Buddhist communities," Lambeth Palace said.

The thousands congregated at the Abbey and millions expected to be watching on screens as the ceremony is telecast live will be invited to say the words: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law - so help me God".

The five elements of the historic "English Coronation Rite" will take place in their traditional order: The Recognition; The Oath; The Anointing; The Investiture and Crowning; and The Enthronement and Homage.

These elements will take place within the traditional structure of a service of Holy Communion, including prayers and Bible readings, and King Charles and Queen Camilla will receive Holy Communion during the service.

Indian-Origin Gang Boss Jailed For Drug Smuggling, Money Laundering In UK

An Indian-origin crime gang boss is serving an eight-year-10-month prison sentence after admitting to drug smuggling and money laundering charges in a British court.

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) said its officers proved that Raj Singh, 45, from Surrey in south-east England ran an organised crime group and regularly worked together with Waqas Iqbal, 41, to buy and sell Class A drugs and firearms.

The duo also planned to launder money and send ketamine to Canada. In February, Raj Singh - whose full name is Rajinder Singh Bassi - pleaded guilty to charges of supplying Class A banned substance cocaine, conspiracy to supply Class B banned substance ketamine and money laundering at the Guildford Crown Court.

He also admitted to assault in a separate matter, when he was involved in a pub fight in which he kicked a police officer's leg as she tried to restrain him.

His sentence includes 16 months for causing actual bodily harm to the officer, who required significant rehabilitation on her knee and cannot return to frontline policing due to the injuries.

The NCA revealed details of the case this week after Iqbal was sentenced to 12 years in prison at the same court in southern England on Friday after he admitted conspiracy to import Class A drugs, conspiracy to transfer a prohibited weapon and money laundering.

"Though Iqbal and Singh operated within the London area they had criminal connections in multiple countries within mainland Europe and further afield," said Dean Wallbank, NCA operations manager.

"Like other high-end dealers, Iqbal and Singh are toxic and responsible for causing very serious levels of harm to society. They didn't care what bloodshed the guns and drugs led to, just as long as they made money. Protecting the public from the threats of Class A drugs and firearms is a priority for the NCA," he said.

The NCA caught the duo after intercepting their messages to buy and supply Class A drugs and guns on the encrypted communications platform EncroChat.

They were not known by their real names on EncroChat but by "handles", with Raj Singh as Salmonagent and Waqas Iqbal as Ghostshooter. The crucial phone evidence also showed the pair conspiring on firearms details.

The duo was held as part of the NCA-led Operation Venetic, the UK response to the takedown of EncroChat in 2020 after the messages between Raj Singh and Waqas Iqbal revealed how significant their offending was.

Delhi Records 1 Death, 564 New Covid Cases In 24 Hours

Delhi reported 564 fresh coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 14.93 per cent, and one Covid-related fatality on Saturday, according to data shared by the city government's health department.

With the fresh cases and fatality, the national capital's caseload climbed to 20,38,317 and the death count rose to 26,627.

The fresh cases emerged from 3,778 tests, including 2,738 RT-PCR/CBNAAT/True Nat tests, conducted the previous day, it said.

Delhi on Thursday logged 865 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 16.90 per cent and seven deaths.

The health department did not issue a bulletin on Friday.

The number of active cases in Delhi stands at 3,440. Of these, 2,603 patients are in home isolation, the health department bulletin issued on Saturday said.

Only 279 of the 7,970 COVID-19 beds in the national capital are occupied at present, the data showed.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi had dropped to zero on January 16 for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic. However, the city has witnessed a spurt in fresh cases over the past month.

On April 11, mock drills were conducted in Delhi hospitals to ascertain their preparedness to deal with any eventuality.

Medical experts have said Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 could be driving the surge in cases in the city. However, they have maintained that there is no need to panic and people should follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and get their booster shots.

"Will Go On Hunger Strike": Shraddha Walkar's Father Demands Fast-Track Trial

Vikas Walkar, the father of Shraddha Walkar who was allegedly killed by her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala last year, on Saturday demanded that the case be fast-tracked so that he can perform her last rites.

Speaking to reporters after a court here adjourned its order on framing of charges against Poonawala till May 9, Vikas said he would go on a hunger strike if the case is not fast-tracked within a month.

The court also adjourned till May 9 the hearing on an application by Vikas urging the judge that his daughter's remains be handed over to the family for the last rites as required by tradition and culture.

"I do not think the case is going to conclude soon. We are seeking fast-tracking of proceedings in the case. I have not been able to perform my daughter's last rites yet. In May, it will be a year since she died," Vikas said.

He said his main priority was to perform the last rites of his daughter and that justice is done.

"I'll go on a hunger strike if the case is not fast-tracked within a month... I want him (Poonawala) to be hanged as soon as possible," he added.

Vikas said he will file a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking fast-tracking of the proceedings.

Additional Sessions Judge Vishal Pahuja adjourned the order on framing of charges against Poonawala on Saturday, noting that the judge concerned was on leave.

Additional Sessions Judge Manisha Khurana Kakkar had on April 15 reserved the order for Saturday after hearing arguments of prosecution lawyers as well as the accused on framing of charges.

Shraddha was allegedly strangled by Poonawala on May 18 last year. He sawed her body into pieces and kept them in a fridge for almost three weeks at his house in south Delhi's Mehrauli before scattering them at different places in the capital.

Poonawala has been booked by Delhi Police under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police filed a 6,629-page charge sheet in the case on January 24.

Union Minister Faces Police Case Over "Ravan" Jibe Against Ashok Gehot

A first information report (FIR) has been filed against Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for his comment on Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, which a local Congress leader said was derogatory.

Mr Shekhawat, during a BJP "mahaakrosh sabha" event in Chittorgarh on Thursday, had called Mr Gehlot "Ravan of politics", saying people should throw this government out in the upcoming assembly elections.

"If you want to end (the rule of) Ashok Gehlot, this Ravan of politics in Rajasthan, raise your hands and resolve to establish Ram Rajya in the state," the Union Minister had said.

Mr Gehlot and Mr Shekhawat have been at loggerheads over the Sanjivani Credit Cooperative Society scam.

Mr Gehlot has publicly accused Mr Shekhawat of being involved in the scam.

Mr Shekhawat has also filed a defamation case against Mr Gehlot in a Delhi court for linking him with the scam, which is being investigated by the Rajasthan Police. The investigators have said Sanjivani Credit Cooperative Society allegedly embezzled the earnings of lakhs of people in Rajasthan.

The local Congress leader, Surendra Singh Jadawat, filed the FIR with a police station in Chittor under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The Jodhpur bench of the Rajasthan High Court had paused Mr Shekhawat's arrest in connection with the scam recently.

Yesterday, the high court also took on record the clarification by the Ashok Gehlot government on calling Mr Shekhawat an accused in the case.

Responding to the Union Minister's jibe, Mr Gehlot yesterday said the Union Minister's friends are in jail in connection with the scam and Mr Shekhawat, too, is likely to go to prison. Mr Gehlot has asked the centre to sack him from the Union cabinet.

"If I am Ravan, you become Ram and return the investors' money," Mr Gehlot said.

Gypsy Driver Arrested After Video Of Tiger Charging At Tourists Goes Viral

A gypsy driver in Uttarakhand was recently arrested for allegedly provoking a tiger after a video of the wild animal charging at a tourist vehicle was shared widely on social media. The incident took place near Jim Corbett National Park on Wednesday morning. In the clip, the tiger was seen coming out from the bushes and growling ferociously before charging towards the tourist vehicle.

On Friday, Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda informed that the driver of the gypsy was arrested for provoking the wild cat. He has been booked under Wildlife Protection Act, the forest official said on Twitter.

As seen in the clip, the tiger is seen growling. It seems annoyed and remains behind bushes off the road. Meanwhile, one of the tourists is heard shouting at the tiger. The vehicle stands still with the visitors while they capture the tiger in their cameras.

Seconds later, the tiger takes a leap from behind the bushes towards the vehicle. The tourists again start shouting and the car starts moving in reverse. However, the angry tiger starts following the gypsy.

Finally, at the end of the clip, the tiger stands still while growling, before disappearing in the forest.

The clip had accumulated more than 88,000 views and thousands of comments. Several internet users vented out their anger on visitors for not following rules while visiting sanctuaries and national parks.

"Sensitizing the visitors about habits and habitats of animals is very important as we have less space for wildlife and more people are entering their space. Nature guides have a very important role in this," wrote one user. "the safari numbers needs to be curtailed - daily basis and also some weeks of no safari," said another.

2 Cases Filed Against Wrestling Body Chief After Supreme Court Intervention

The Delhi Police have filed two cases against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh after the country's top wrestlers made allegations of sexual harassment against him.

The Delhi Police, which functions under Amit Shah's Home Ministry, filed the two first information reports (FIRs) hours after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so, amid protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar by wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat.

One of the FIRs is over a complaint of sexual harassment by a minor, filed under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which gives no scope for bail.

The Delhi Police will pursue the case actively, sources said.

Mr Singh, who is also a BJP MP, welcomed the Supreme Court's order to file the police case into allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Mr Singh told reporters the wrestlers should have waited for the report of a committee that was tasked to look into the matter before they decided to sit on a protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

"I am happy with the judiciary's decision. The Delhi Police will investigate the allegations and I am ready to cooperate with them in every possible way. No one is bigger than the judiciary in this country. The order has come to file an FIR (first information report). The government had also said it had no objection to filing an FIR. I am not larger than the Supreme Court. I welcome the order," Mr Singh told reporters.

4ghgtu7o

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had formed the committee to look into the allegations against the WFI and its chief. The committee, which was told to give a report to the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry, had given it on April 5. But the ministry has not yet made public the findings of the six-member committee.

"I didn't raise any objection when the oversight committee was formed, didn't ask any question or put hurdles. I have followed the law. They (wrestlers) should have waited for the report. But they didn't. They went to the Supreme Court. I follow the law, but it seems they don't," Mr Singh told reporters today.

"I welcome every decision. The one taken by the government, the move to set up an oversight committee, and I welcome the latest decision (of the Supreme Court) because I have not done anything wrong against anyone," he said.

Despite the assurance of police action, the wrestlers said they will continue their sit-in protest demanding the "immediate arrest" of the WFI chief.

"We respect Supreme Court's order, but we don't have faith in Delhi Police. This fight is not for an FIR. This fight is to punish people like him. He needs to be in jail and stripped of his portfolios," the wrestlers said.

Credit For Ram Temple Goes To PM Modi and Amit Shah: Gujarat Chief Minister

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should be given credit for the ongoing construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya and maintained the two senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have done a lot in preserving the country's culture and faith.

Bhupendra Patel said several agitations took place in the past for a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Ram in Uttar Pradesh, where a mega temple dedicated to the deity is coming up.

He was addressing a gathering at a "Ram Katha" (recitation of life story of Lord Ram) organised by Vishv Umiyadham in the Nikol area of the city on Thursday night.

"We all know how many agitations took place in the past for the construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The temple will be ready by 2024. We should give credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for that. They contributed a lot in preserving our faith and culture," said the CM.

Vishv Umiyadham is a mega temple complex coming up at Jaspur village near Ahmedabad city at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore. The temple will be dedicated to Maa Umiya, the reigning deity of 'Kadva Patels', a sub-group of the Patidar community.

According to the Vishv Umiya Foundation, the temple, once completed, will be the tallest shrine in the world with an overall height of 504 feet.

Notably, PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for this mega temple complex, spread across 30 lakh square feet, in March 2019 in the presence of lakhs of people.

Besides a grand temple, the complex will house a skill development university, hostels for boys and girls, a job placement and counselling centre for students, a counselling cell for issues related to agriculture and immigration and a centre to resolve social and commercial disputes among community members.

The facility will also have a sports and health complex, an NRI Bhavan, employment training centre, a healthcare unit and apartments for elderly citizens.

In 2019, the trustees had said the temple and skill university building will be ready in 4 to 5 years, while it will take another five years to construct the remaining structures.

Several posts on the internet show heartwarming moments between humans and animals. In one such instance, Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Parveen Kaswan shared a picture of a man providing medical aid to a deer. The post has moved the internet and many people appreciated the efforts of the man.

Mr Kaswan took to Twitter to share the post. The photograph shows a man taking care of a deer where the animal is seen wearing an oxygen mask and the man is holding an oxygen cylinder, ensuring that the deer is fine.

"In a world where you can be anything. Be kind to all," he posted along with the photograph. Since being shared, the post has amassed over 21,000 views and over a thousand likes.

Social media users commented on the post with heart emojis, expressing their happiness and gratitude for the kind act.

"Lovely!" said a user.

"One of the most beautiful thing i have seen today," said another person.

A third person said, "Nice".

In November last year, a video of a Sambar deer visiting a tea stall and having snacks went viral on social media. It was shared by IFS officer Dr Samrat Gowda on Twitter. The video showed a Sambar deer standing in front of a makeshift tea stall and looking at the food items. A man, holding a food item, gestured to the deer to come to another side. The animal understood and moved in that direction.

The Sambar was subsequently given food by the man and was seen eating it. While some of the guests at the tea shop moved closer to get a better look, the deer continued to eat from the man's hand peacefully.

In Daring Op, Air Force Pilots Use Night Vision Goggles To Land In Sudan

The Indian Air Force conducted a daring night operation by flying into an unprepared runway in the darkness to rescue 121 personnel from a small airstrip in violence-hit Sudan last night.

The Indian Air Force landed its C-130J Hercules transport aircraft on an airstrip, which was in a degraded condition with no navigational approach aids or fuel and landing lights that are needed to guide an aircraft to land at night.

The C-130J landed on an airstrip in Wadi Sayyidna in Sudan to rescue passengers who had no means to reach the Port Of Sudan.

The Air Force pilots used Night Vision Googles (NVGs) to carry out a flawless landing at night. While approaching the airstrip, the aircrew used their Electro-Optical/Infra-Red sensors to ensure there is no obstruction on the small runway, which is about 40 Km north of Khartoum, the said epicenter of violence in Sudan.

8u9ging

After ensuring the runway is clear, the daring pilots carried out a tactical approach. Upon landing, the aircraft engines were kept running.

Eight Garuda commandos from Air Force's special forces unit secured the passengers and ensured the safe boarding of luggage in the aircraft.

Similar to the flawless landing on the blind airstrip, the take-off was also carried out using NVGs.

The two and an hour operation between Wadi Sayyidna and Jeddah is similar to the one carried out in Kabul and is another testament to the air force's sheer audacity to conduct daring operations during a humanitarian crisis.

Today, India brought 754 home under 'Operation Kaveri' to evacute stranded Indians in Sudan. While 392 people were flown to Delhi in the C-17 transport aircraft by the air force, the remaining 362 Indians were brought to Bengaluru.

A total of 1,360 Indian have been brought back to India since the rescue operation began.

The fighting in Sudan is part of the ongoing clashes between the country's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

"Am Not Bigger Than Supreme Court...": Wrestling Body Chief On FIR Order

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has welcomed the Supreme Court's order to file a police case into allegations of sexual harassment made against him by the country's top wrestlers.

The Delhi Police told the Supreme Court today that a case will be filed against the influential chief of the WFI, who is also a BJP MP.

The wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat have alleged the authorities did not file the FIR for a long time despite their requests.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had formed the committee to look into the allegations against the WFI and its chief. The committee, which was told to give a report to the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry, had given it on April 5. But the ministry has not yet made public the findings of the six-member committee.

"We respect Supreme Court's order, but we don't have faith in Delhi Police. This fight is not for an FIR. This fight is to punish people like him. He needs to be in jail and stripped of his portfolios," the wrestlers said.

Bengal Ram Navami Violence: BJP Welcomes High Court Order Over Probe

The BJP on Thursday welcomed the Calcutta High Court order directing the NIA to probe into the violence during Ram Navami in West Bengal, while the ruling TMC stated that the central agency must act "impartially" and should not try to protect the opposition party's goons involved in the clash.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP and others, the high court earlier in the day directed transfer of the investigation into violence at Shibpur in Howrah and Rishra in Hooghly district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from the West Bengal Police.

The petitioners sought an NIA probe as, they alleged, bombs exploded during the violence.

"We have full respect for the judiciary. We will not comment on the court order. But we will like to say that the NIA must act impartially and not work only to protect the BJP goons involved in the violence. We have seen how central agencies like CBI and ED are only busy implicating TMC leaders (in various cases)," TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.

The West Bengal BJP welcomed the court order and said only the NIA investigation could reveal the truth.

Clashes broke out between two groups at Shibpur area of Howrah during Ram Navami festivities on March 30, during which several vehicles were torched and shops were ransacked. Violence was also reported on April 2 evening during a procession as part of the festival at Rishra.

A youth from Bihar's Munger was arrested on the charge of carrying a firearm during a Ram Navami procession in Howrah, whom the TMC claimed was a BJP supporter.

The court directed the state police to transfer all records and CCTV footage relating to the matter to the central agency within two weeks.

Notice To IAS Officer As 15th Century Delhi Palace Makes Way For Bungalow

A 15th Century palace has been razed in Delhi's Jal Vihar, apparently to make way for a palatial bungalow. Former Jal Board chief Udit Prakash Rai whose family lives in it, has been handed a notice by the Vigilance Department of the Delhi government.  He has been accused of facilitating the demolition, and allotting the bungalow to himself when it was built.

The monument was a palace from the Pathan period -- it is the only remnant of the Khizrabad city founded by Khizr Khan of the Sayyid dynasty. It was under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Jal Board.

A 2007 batch IAS officer, Udit Prakash Rai is currently posted in Mizoram. His family is living in the bungalow despite notices to vacate it. He has been given two weeks to respond to the Vigilance notice.

The monument was to be handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India by the Jal Board, but officials found it missing during a joint inspection in January, said the vigilance department's notice issued on Wednesday.

The Archaeological Survey had asked for the handover of the palace in January 2021 but it did not happen. The Vigilance Department has claimed that Udit Prakash Rai had blocked the handover.

Locals told NDTV that there was a fort-like structure over a very large area. But now a bungalow has been built at the same place. Parts of the ruins were visible nearby.

A number of political parties, including the BJP and Trinamool Congress, have demanded action over the demolition of the monument. In a letter to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, demanded a high-level investigation.

"Only in India. Fifteenth-century monument demolished to construct govt officer's bungalow. Are the Archaeological Survey of India and Ministry of Culture napping yet again? Urging G Kishan Reddy (Union Minister For Culture and Tourism) to look at this," tweeted Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra.

The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association election will be held in June, three years after the term of previous office-bearers ended.

A group of senior faculty members on Thursday launched a mass contact drive to highlight their demand for holding elections to various governing bodies of the university.

A spokesperson of the association said, "Teachers would intensify their protest in the coming days if the university authorities do not concede their demand for restoration of democratic rights of teachers at AMU."

India, European Free Trade Agreement Nations Discuss Resumption Of Talks

India and the four-nation bloc EFTA on Wednesday discussed ways to resume negotiations for a free trade agreement with a view to strengthening economic ties between the two regions.

The subject came up for discussion during a meeting of high-level representatives from India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) here.

Both sides "discuss the prospects of resuming their negotiations towards a Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA)," the commerce ministry said in a statement.

Free trade agreements between the two regions are officially dubbed TEPA. Under such pacts, two trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them, besides easing norms to promote trade in services and investments.

The high-level delegations were composed of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal; Jan Christian Vestre, Minister of Trade and Industry of Norway; Helene Budliger Artieda, Swiss State Secretary at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO; Martin Eyjolfsson, Permanent Secretary of State of Iceland at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Kurt Jager, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to EFTA, WTO and the UN in Geneva; and Henri Getaz, Secretary-General of the EFTA.

"The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on the state of play of their negotiations and explore ways to advance the talks," it said.

The participants acknowledged the challenges posed by the current global economic and trade environment, as well as the need to address the bilateral trade and economic partnership issues in a constructive and pragmatic manner.

"Both sides agreed to continue their efforts to resolve all outstanding issues and work towards deepening and strengthening the economic partnership while contributing to a more inclusive global trading system," it added.

EFTA countries are not part of the European Union (EU).  EFTA is an inter-governmental organisation for the promotion and intensification of free trade. It was founded as an alternative for states that did not wish to join the European Community (EC).

India's exports to EFTA countries during April-February 2022-23 stood at USD 1.67 billion as against USD 1.74 billion in 2021-22. While imports aggregated at USD 15 billion during the 11-month period of 2022-23 as compared to USD 25.5 billion in 2021-22. The trade gap is in the favour of the EFTA group.

US Couple Arrested For Tying Down And Forcibly Tattooing Their Children

A mother and a stepfather in US' Texas have been arrested after they allegedly tattooed their children by force, then tried to remove the tattoos once authorities got involved, New York Post reported.

As per an arrest affidavit obtained by KTRE, Megan Mae Farr, 27, and Gunner Farr, 23, tied down their 9-year-old and 5-year-old children and forcibly gave them tattoos. While one received a tattoo on the foot, the other child received one on the shoulder, according to the report. The investigation alleges that the children were tied down with a rope, their mouths covered with tape and a rag covered their eyes.

However, when the biological father and stepmother saw the tattoos on the children, they reported the matter to Child Protective Services (CPS).

When the couple came to know that CPS was looking into the matter, they tried to evade arrest by forcibly removing the tattoos. They tried to cover the tattoos by "cutting, scraping, and scrubbing" the areas, and removing them by rubbing the tattoos with lemon juice.

''There were visible injuries on the child at the specific location of the tattoo and it appeared that the flesh was removed from the body at the tattoo location and this happened about the time that CPS got involved in the allegations of the child abuse,'' interim Zavalla Police Chief Lt. James Denby told KTRE.

On Monday, both parents were arrested and charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint.

While Megan Mae Farr was charged with two counts of injury to a child and unlawful restraint, Gunner Farr was charged with one count of unlawful restraint and one count of injury to a child.

The children have since been placed in the care of CPS and investigations are ongoing.

"Will Hold A Sit-In" If Amartya Sen's House Bulldozed: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said that she will hold a sit-in at Bolpur in case authorities of the Visva Bharati University try to "bulldoze" Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's ancestral house 'Pratichi' in the campus area on the charge that he was illegally occupying more land than was leased out to him.

The University in an eviction order, has asked Mr Sen to vacate by May 6 or within 15 days of the publication of the last order, 0.13 aces (5,550 square feet) of the 1.38 acres of the leased land which the authorities claim the famed economist occupies in an "unauthorised manner".

Ms Banerjee told mediapersons here, "Amartya Sen is being attacked every day. I have seen their (VB's) audacity. I will be the first person to go there (Bolpur) if they (try to) bulldoze his house. I will hold a sit-in there.

"I want to see who is more powerful - bulldozer or humanity," she said.

Ms Banerjee had handed over to Mr Sen on January 30 documents of the state land and revenue department stating that the entire 1.38 acre of land belonged to the Sen's through a mutation done in 2006.

The university authorities have challenged the documents.

Its notice said, "Amartya Kumar Sen and all concerned persons are liable to be evicted from the said premises, if need be, by use of such force as may be necessary." "It is decided that 13 decimals of land having the dimension of 50 ft x 111 ft in the north-west corner of the scheduled premises is to be recovered from him," it said.

"Thus he (Sen) can lawfully occupy 1.25 acres of land only, as lessee (for the residual period of lease) in the scheduled premises," the notice issued by Joint Registrar Asish Mahato said.

The notice has been criticised by other political parties too including the Congress, which accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government of "targeting" Mr Sen for being a stern critic of the Hindutva forces.

Founded in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore, Visva Bharati was a college till it was made a central university by an act of Parliament in 1951.

It is Bengal's only central university and the prime minister is its chancellor.

BJP Files Complaint Against Assam Congress Leader Over "Derogatory" Remark

The Assam BJP Mahila Morcha - the women's wing of the party - has filed a police complaint today against Congress's state working president, Rana Goswami, for an alleged derogatory remark against women.

This comes after Mr Goswami's comment during a press conference where he had allegedly said that women were not safe in the BJP.

The complaint by BJP Spokesperson Janki Khound, filed at the Dispur police station, accused Mr Goswami of allegedly saying women workers in the BJP have illicit relationships with men.

"On April 24, Rana Goswami, Working President of APCC, addressed a press conference in Sivsagar Town and intentionally insulted, defamed, and outraged the modesty of the women karyakartas of the BJP by saying that the 'women workers of the BJP are living together (cohabitation) with another men in spite of being married', along with some other obscene language," it said.

"The aforesaid false statements were widely published in the print media and other forms of publications. The women karyakartas of the BIP felt tremendous insult and it may lead to a breach of peace of their family life and it defames their image in the society and outrages their modesty," said Juri Sharma Bordoloi, a senior BJP leader.

She also said that the party will demand his arrest for the "derogatory" remark against women.

"We will raise our voice against Rana Goswami and demand his arrest for giving such derogatory statements against BJP women karyakartas. Women have always been insulted in Congress. Recently, we have seen how an Assam leader was insulted by the Congress leadership," she stated.

Mr Goswami or the Assam unit of Congress is yet to react to the complaint at the time of filing this report.

2 Men Who Planted Drugs On Actor Cheated Others Too In Same Way: Cops

Two men who allegedly cheated a 27-year-old actor from the city by allegedly planting drugs on her and sending her to Sharjah, UAE, had victimised four more persons in the same way, police said on Tuesday.

Ravi Bobhate and Anthony Paul, the accused, were produced before a court which sent them in police custody till May 4, a police official said in Mumbai.

Four more people have now come forward with similar complaints against them, the crime branch official said.

The accused allegedly sent Chrisann Pereira, a city-based actor, to Sharjah, telling her that auditions for a Hollywood web series had been arranged there.

On April 1, on landing in Sharjah, she was arrested for drug possession. It is suspected that the drugs were concealed in a memento which one of the accused had given to her to hand it over to someone in the UAE.

The duo later allegedly demanded Rs 80 lakh from Pramila Pereira, her mother, to rescue her. Pramila Pereira then approached Vakola police who booked them for cheating.

After Chrisann's brother narrated the whole story on Instagram, four more persons approached the Mumbai crime branch and said they were cheated by the accused with the same modus operandi.

The accused sent them to Dubai with various promises and planted drugs in their baggage, they alleged.

After the complainants got arrested for drug possession, the accused asked for money from their family members to rescue them, the complainants told police.

One of the victims of this scam, Phelan Futado, is still in Sharjah in a drugs case, the official said, adding that a probe was on.

No Legal Right For Same-Sex Marriage Is "Clear Discrimination": Petitioner

The petitioners seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to recognise their right to marry saying there can't be a situation where the court will say it will give nothing as it can't give everything.

Not granting legal sanction to same-sex marriage would amount to "clear discrimination" on the ground of sexual orientation of a person and this may led to "gay brain-drain" where such persons will be forced to go to other countries for enjoying the fruits of marriage and other consequential benefits, said senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal, himself a gay.

Kirpal, appearing for the petitioners' side, told a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud that seven per cent of India's GDP will be affected if the LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, asexual, and ally) are denied this fundamental right.

"There can't be a situation where the court will say that as it can't give everything, so it will give nothing," he told the bench, also comprising justices S K Kaul, S R Bhat, Hima Kohli and P S Narasimha.

During the fourth day's hearing in the matter, Kirpal said non-recognition of same-sex marriage will lead to a situation where gays and lesbians will be unwillingly tied in an unworkable marriage.

He said the LGBTQIA community cannot be left at the "mercy" of Parliament, which "failed them for 75 long years".

One of the lawyers appearing for the petitioners' side said 12 out of the G20 countries, including the EU, have permitted same sex marriages and around 34 countries of the world have also done that so India should not be "lagging" behind.

The hearing in the matter remained inconclusive and would continue on Wednesday.

Kirpal's name for elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court is still pending with the Centre despite the apex court Collegium reiterating his name for judgeship.
