US Government Hours From Shutdown, Funding Chaos

With the US government just hours from shutting down on Saturday, Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy pitched a last-gasp stopgap measure to avoid a closure that would throw into doubt everything from access to national parks to Washington's massive support for Ukraine.

The freeze of all but critical government services, set to start after midnight Saturday (0400 GMT Sunday) if lawmakers fail to reach a deal, would be the first since 2019 -- immediately delaying salaries for millions of federal employees and military personnel.

Congress has been unable to break the deadlock, largely due to a small group of hard-line Republicans in the House of Representatives pushing back against temporary funding proposals that would at least keep the lights on.

Speaker McCarthy called a vote Saturday on a fresh measure that would keep the government open for another 45 days at current spending levels, but without any aid for Ukraine -- a point of major contention for Democrats.

"I am asking Republicans and Democrats alike. Put your partisanship away," McCarthy said Saturday.

If the bill receives the significant Democratic support it would need to pass and overcome hardline Republican opposition in the House, the right-wingers have threatened to remove the speaker from his post.

"If somebody wants to remove (me) because I want to be the adult in the room, go ahead and try," McCarthy said, as he also sought to shift any blame for a shutdown on President Joe Biden.

If Biden lobbies against the latest stopgap, "then the shutdown is on him," McCarthy said.

The White House insists the real negotiation is between McCarthy and the hardliners who scuppered a similar temporary funding measure on Friday, underlying a growing sense of chaos inside the Republican party ahead of next year's presidential election.

"There are those in Congress right now who are sowing so much division, they're willing to shut down the government tonight," Biden said Saturday morning on X, formerly known as Twitter. "It's unacceptable."

The Democrat-controlled Senate had been expected to vote on its own stopgap bill later Saturday - one that does include funding for Ukraine.

- Big question on Ukraine -

While all critical government services would remain functioning, a shutdown would mean the majority of national parks, for example -- from the iconic Yosemite and Yellowstone in the west to Florida's Everglades swamp -- would be closed to public access beginning Sunday.

With student loan payments resuming in October, officials also said Friday that key activities at the Federal Student Aid office would continue for a couple of weeks.

But a prolonged shutdown could cause bigger disruptions.

A shutdown "unnecessarily" places the world's largest economy at risk, White House National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard told CNBC.

Risks that could percolate through the wider economy include air travel delays, with air traffic controllers asked to work without pay.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned a closure could also delay infrastructure improvements.

"In the immediate term, a government shutdown will only reduce GDP by 0.2 percentage points each week it lasts," said a report released Friday by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank, adding that a shutdown would "undermine the United States' overall credibility as a commercial partner."

The mess casts a growing shadow over Biden's policy of arming and funding Ukraine in its desperate war against the Russian invasion. For Republican hardliners behind the derailment of a new budget, stopping aid to Ukraine is a key goal.

Most Republican members of Congress continue to support US backing for Ukraine, but the shutdown will at minimum raise questions over the political viability of renewing the multibillion-dollar flow of assistance.

Ashok Gehlot's Remarks On Vice President "Indecent": Rajasthan BJP Leader

Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore on Friday lashed out at Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for his remarks on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and said it is "inappropriate and indecent to comment on the constitutional head."

Mr Rathore said that Gehlot has given a statement that now the President is left to come to Rajasthan on a tour.

"They are our constitutional head, it is inappropriate and indecent to comment on the constitutional head in this manner. Is the chief minister implementing a system which will require the president, vice president and prime minister to take a visa to come?" Mr Rathore asked.

"If Chief Minister Gehlot does not withdraw his statement, we will take legal action," he told reporters at a press conference here.

Mr Gehlot had on Thursday objected to Vice President Dhankhar's frequent visits to the state ahead of the upcoming assembly polls.

Taking a dig at the frequent visits of the BJP leaders to Rajasthan, the chief minister told the party to not "send" Vice President Dhankhar as he occupies a constitutional post.

"There is no problem if leaders come to the state, but don't send the Vice President. Vice President is a constitutional post. We all respect the Vice President and the President," Mr Gehlot said.

"Yesterday, the Vice President came and visited five districts. What is the logic? Elections are to be held soon...if you come during this, it will have different meanings and messages, which will not be a good thing for democracy," he told the gathering at Kathuwas village in Kotputli-Behror district.

The chief minister later told reporters in Neemrana that "now, only the President remains to come here." Escalating his attack on Gehlot, Rathore said that the Congress government has completely failed on the law and order as well as women's safety.  "This government is guilty because Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has not appointed a full-time home minister and is occupying that chair himself," he said.  Rajasthan BJP chief CP Joshi alleged that the ineffective government of the Congress has tarnished the state's glorious history.  "Atrocities on women are continuously increasing in the state, the law and order system has become weak. The ineffective government of the Congress in Rajasthan has tarnished the glorious history of the state," he said.

Joshi said that there was a time when foundation stones were laid in Rajasthan, but it took years to inaugurate them.  The BJP leader said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had held a meeting in Jaipur on Monday, will soon inaugurate and lay foundation stone in Chittorgarh and Jodhpur.

10 Years To 18: The History Of Age Of Consent In India

Even as the Law Commission recommended the government not to tinker with the age of consent of 18 years, this age in India has varied widely over a period of time, from 10 years in 1860 to 16 years for females till 2012.

The age of consent is the age at which a person is considered legally capable of agreeing to marriage or sexual intercourse.

This age is defined by statute and, at present, the age of consent for sexual intercourse is 18 years on the basis of POCSO Act.

However, prior to the POCSO Act in 2012, there was no age of consent defined separately for males and it was fixed by virtue of Section 375 of the IPC, which defines "rape". For females, the age of consent was 16 years till 2012.

Rape being defined as a crime that can only be committed against a woman, the age of consent for sexual intercourse was only defined for a female, under which the age of consent is immaterial and any sexual activity amounts to statutory rape.

On the other hand, there was no age of consent for males. In fact, the term "child" itself was not defined either under the IPC or the General Clauses Act, 1897.

Further, the age of consent defined for a woman by virtue of Section 375 of the IPC defining "rape", has had a chequered history with the age set at 10 years in 1860 to 18 years as it stands currently.

In the report submitted to the law ministry, the law panel gave a brief history of the age of consent in the country over the years.

In 1860, the age of consent for females stood at 10 years, the report said.

Thereafter, in 1891, the age of consent for a woman was raised to 12 years under Section 375 in the aftermath of the public outcry caused by the Phulmoni case.

Phulmoni was an 11-year-old girl who died of haemorrhage from a rupture of the vagina caused by her husband who had forced sex on her. The husband was held guilty of only causing grievous hurt by doing a rash or negligent act dangerous to life and sentenced to one year's rigorous imprisonment.

Thereafter, the age of consent was raised to 14 years in 1925 and to 16 years in 1940.

Up till 2012, when the POCSO Act was enacted, the age of consent remained 16 years for females and there continued to be no age of consent defined for a male.

However, the minimum age of marriage was 18 years for women and 21 years for men.

The marital rape exception in Section 375 has also witnessed changes over the years starting from 10 years in 1860 to 15 years in 2012.

The Figure For Different Countries

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child defines a child as any person below the age of 18 years. However, the age of consent ranges from 13 to 18 years globally. The age of consent in Canada was raised from 14 to 16 years only in 2008 in light of increased incidents of teenagers being lured online.

In the US, the age of consent varies by state. Under the federal law, the age of consent in the US is 18 years.

In many states, in addition to age of consent, there is a minimum age requirement and the criminality of sexual intercourse with an individual who is above the minimum age requirement and below the age of consent is dependent on the age differential between the two parties and/or the age of the defendant.

The age of consent in Australia varies between 16 to 17 years depending on the state or territory. The age of consent in Japan was 13 years till 2023 while the age of majority is 20 years and the minimum age for marriage for a man is 18 years and 16 for a woman.

In South Africa, the age of consent is 16 years even though a child has been defined as a person under the age of 18 years.

American Soldier, Who Illegally Entered North Korea, Back In US

American soldier Travis King has returned to the United States after being freed by North Korea, a Defense Department official said Thursday.

"I can confirm that he has landed in the US," the official told AFP, without providing further details.

A US official previously said King would be taken to the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas upon his return to the United States -- the same place that American basketball star Brittney Griner was evaluated after being released by Russia.

After a drunken pub fight, an incident with police and a stay in South Korean jail, Private Second Class King was being taken to the airport in July to fly back to Texas.

But instead of travelling to Fort Bliss for disciplinary hearings, he snuck away, joined a Demilitarized Zone sightseeing trip and slipped over the border.

Last month, Pyongyang confirmed it was holding him, saying King had defected to North Korea to escape "mistreatment and racial discrimination in the US Army."

But after completing its investigation, Pyongyang has "decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the US Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK, under the law of the Republic," the Korean Central News Agency said Wednesday, using the North's formal acronym.

King's border crossing came with relations between the two Koreas at one of their lowest points ever, with diplomacy stalled and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un calling for increased weapons development, including tactical nuclear warheads.

The two Koreas remain technically at war because the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice, not a treaty, and most of the border between them is heavily fortified.

One of the last US citizens to be detained by the North was student Otto Warmbier, who was held for a year and a half before being released in a coma to the United States. He died six days later.

Around half a dozen American soldiers made rare defections to the North after the Korean War and were used for the country's propaganda.

Girl,15, Stabbed To Death On Way To School In Latest Knife Attack In London

London police said they had arrested a teenager after a 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death on her way to school on Wednesday, stoking fresh concern about the scale of knife crime in the UK.

Emergency services including an air ambulance were called to the scene in Croydon, south London, at around 8.30 am (0730 GMT) following reports of a stabbing.

Paramedics battled to save the girl but she was pronounced dead at the scene 50 minutes later, police said, adding that a 17-year-old boy was later arrested.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he was "heartbroken" by the fatal incident and pledged to "continue working day and night to end the scourge of knife crime in our city".

According to official figures, 99 people under the age of 25 were killed in England and Wales with a knife or sharp object in the year to March 2023. Of those 13 were under the age of 16.

The deaths were among 50,000 stabbing incidents in the year to March 2023, a five percent increase on the previous year and a 75 percent increase on a decade ago, the figures from the Office for National Statistics showed.

Police said the suspect in custody was being questioned by detectives.

"Our immediate thoughts are with this young girl's family who are facing the most tragic of news. Our officers are with the girl's family to support them," said Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain of the Metropolitan Police.

Victor Azare, a 50-year-old security guard on his way home after a night shift, said he and others chased a boy in a school blazer after seeing him stab the girl in the neck with a knife that was "black, thin, and about a foot (30 centimeters) long".

"We tried to catch him and a lot of people tried to save the girl. I was so shocked, I was shaken. It's somebody's daughter," he told British media.

Media reports said the girl had just got off a bus at the time and appeared to have been having an argument with a boy who then attacked her.

The girl, whose identity has not yet been released, was a pupil at Old Palace of John Whitgift School, a private girls' school in Croydon.

"We are deeply shocked by the senseless and tragic death of our much-loved and valued friend and pupil," the school said in a statement.

"It will take some time for the Old Palace community to come to terms with this terrible news.

"Above all, we send our love and deepest sympathies to the girl's family at this unimaginably distressing time," it added.

Ram Temple To Open For Devotees Before January 26 Next Year: Official

Pilgrims will be able to have a glimpse of the idol of Lord Ram in his child form at the temple in Ayodhya definitely before January 26 and the first phase of construction of the grand temple will be completed by December this year, Chairman of Ayodhya Ram Mandir Construction Committee Nripendra Misra has said.

In an interview with ANI, Mr Misra said the ground floor of the temple has five mandaps, starting with the sanctum-sanctorum, where the deity would be installed.

He said the date of "pran prathistha" (consecration) has not been finalised yet.

"It is safe to announce through ANI that the pilgrims would be able to have a glimpse of Lord Ram in his child form definitely before January 26, 2024," Nripendra Misra said.

"I will not be able to give you the exact date because that would depend on the date announced by the Prime Minister's Office for the participation of PM on the last day of Pran Pratishtha, which has yet not been fixed. The date has not come from the Prime Minister's Office and we have to respect the decision of the PM's office in this matter," he added.

He was responding to a query about when the first batch of pilgrims will be able to visit the grand Lord Ram temple being built in Ayodhya.

Mr Misra, a former principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said people want to know when would the temple be completed.

"Their dream has come true. The temple is a reality. The temple will be completed in two parts, the first past- Phase 1 will be completed by December 2023. The first part will be the ground floor of the temple which is about 2.6 acres of land. The ground floor has five mandaps, starting with the sanctum-sanctorum, where the deity would be installed," he said.

"There are 160 pillars on the ground floor, and each pillar has 25 iconographical works of different forms. The work on the lower plinth, which tells Ram Khatha, that is based on carving on the stone and it is taken from Valmiki Ramayan, about 50 per cent of that would be completed," he added.

Supreme Court's verdict in 2019 on the Ayodhya dispute paved the way for the construction of a grand Ram temple.

Following the Supreme Court verdict, the Centre had set up Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Tirtha Kshetra' Trust to take all decisions regarding the construction of a magnificent Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The construction of the temple has been progressing at a steady pace under the supervision of the Trust. The idol of Ram Lalla will be in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Ram Temple on August 5, 2020.

Bear Gatecrashes Family Picnic In Mexico, Gorges On Enchiladas And Tacos

A picnic party at Mexico's Chipinque Ecological Park turned into a heart-stopping encounter for a family when a hungry black bear decided to join their celebrations. In a video that has gone viral on social media, the bear is seen gorging on enchiladas, salsa, tacos, and french fries laid out on a picnic table in the park.

The incident happened when Silvia Macias of Mexico City was celebrating the 15th birthday of her son, Santiago, who has Down's syndrome at the park, as per BBC. Suddenly, a bear showed up out of nowhere, jumped onto the table, and devoured the picnic snacks. The mother-son, meanwhile, sat frozen in silence, as the woman covered the boy's face and held him tight. When there was no more food, the bear leaped off the table and left.

The video was filmed by Ms. Macias' friend, Angela Chapa, and later went viral across several social media platforms.

Watch the video here:

The video has gone viral, and many said that they were terrified watching the clip. Many also lauded the woman's bravery and presence of mind. One user wrote, ''I think the mum was the real bear here protecting her young.''

Another commented, ''This bear in Mexico going to town on tacos and enchiladas while people just remain calm is something to behold.'' A third wrote, ''Mom was amazingly cool and obviously well-versed in how to behave in the situation.''

A fourth said, ''If you are ever encountered by a bear, the most important thing is to stay calm. Do not run away, as this may trigger the bear's chase instinct. Instead, back away slowly and make yourself look as big as possible. If the bear charges, curl up into a ball and protect your head and neck.''

According to a BBC report, the park's website warned visitors that encounters with black bears have increased in the Monterrey metropolitan area and have been seen prowling in parks, neighbourhoods, and streets near the mountains increasing the risk to people and to the bears.

The park also advised visitors to "never try to photograph a bear up close".

Joe Biden Joins Protesting US Auto Workers, First For Sitting President

US President Joe Biden joined striking auto workers on the picket line in Michigan Tuesday in a historic first for a sitting US president, a day before rival Donald Trump makes his own bid for the blue-collar vote in the battleground electoral state.

Wearing a baseball cap with the logo of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, the 80-year-old Democrat told banner-waving employees through a megaphone that he was on their side.

Republican Trump will visit Michigan on Wednesday, turning the strike into a bitter early confrontation between the two top candidates for an election that is still more than a year away.

Biden told workers that the "Big Three" automakers -- Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis -- were "doing incredibly well, and guess what, you should be doing incredibly well too."

"You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits," he said to cheers from the crowd.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described it as a "historic" trip.

"Today will mark the first time a sitting president has visited a picket line in modern times," Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One. "This is an important message to America's auto workers."

The UAW's outspoken chief Shawn Fain greeted Biden on the tarmac in Detroit and accompanied him to the picket line.

For Biden, facing concerns about his poll ratings, his age, and the economy, the trip is a golden opportunity to woo working-class workers and union members.

'Huge'

"That is huge," auto worker Patrick Smaller, 56, said about Biden's visit as he stood on the picket line outside a massive Ford plant in Wayne County, Michigan on Tuesday.

"He believes in what we stand for."

As cars and trucks honked in support, another worker, Tiara Conner, said Biden's visit was "great".

She said she was "not surprised" that Trump was visiting too, adding: "I just hope that he (Trump) is also here for the right reasons and standing in solidarity with us."

The current and former presidents are both targeting the blue-collar vote in Michigan, a key swing state that Trump won in 2016 and then Biden flipped back in 2020.

But their messages there are very different as they look towards a rematch next year.

Biden has consistently talked up his pro-union credentials, and an endorsement from the United Auto Workers (UAW) union helped him secure the presidency three years ago.

"I always support the UAW", Biden said on Monday.

Trump however will be focusing on winning back the working class voters who helped propel him to the White House in 2016, rather than unions with whom he has long had difficult relations.

'Take your jobs'

Trump has focused on attacking Biden's drive to fund a shift to more environmentally friendly electric vehicles, saying it is driving jobs abroad.

"Remember he wants to take your jobs away and give them to China," Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social.

Trump also accused Biden of copying his plans and of "pretending" to be a picket.

However, Biden says his push for electric vehicles is part of a plan to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States and put the country in the lead of a global race to develop green technology.

Jean-Pierre said Biden was "fighting to ensure that the cars of the future will be built in America, by unionized American workers in good paying jobs, instead of being built in China."

Biden's Michigan trip carries a political risk as he must tread a fine line between backing the workers and trying to end a strike that is costing the economy billions of dollars.

The White House deflected a barrage of questions about whether Biden was taking sides in the dispute, saying the president wanted a "win-win" agreement and would not get involved in negotiations.

Many Ministers Absent During Nitish Kumar's Surprise Visit To Offices

Several top ministers of the Bihar government were found absent from their offices when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar paid a surprise visit to their offices on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister, who expressed his unhappiness at the state of attendance, also gave orders asking all ministers and government officials to reach their respective offices by 9.30 am.

Mr Kumar paid surprise visits to Vikas Bhavan (New Secretariat) and Visvesvaraya Bhawan (technical secretariat), located on Bailey Road in the state capital.

During his visit to Vikas Bhavan, Mr Kumar found that some of the ministers were not present inside their chambers.

The ministers who were not present in their chambers included: Chandra Shekhar (Education), Alok Kumar Mehta (Sugarcane Industries minister), Samir Kumar Mahaseth (Industries), Sheela Kumari (Transport) and Kumar Sarvjeet (Agriculture). According to officials, the Chief Minister expressed unhappiness over their absence.

The Chief Minister reached Vikas Bhawan at 9.30 am. The Chief Minister inspected chambers of ministers and senior officers and offices of Education, Health, Industry, Agriculture, Sugarcane Industries, Road Construction, Prohibition, Excise & Registration departments and inquired about the attendance of ministers, officers and employees.

When the Chief Minister visited the state Education minister's chamber and found him absent, the former immediately spoke to the latter over the phone and asked the reason for not reaching the office at 9.30 am, officials said.

Later, the Chief Minister visited Visvesvaraya Bhawan, the building houses more than six departmental offices, including the state planning board, rural works department, road construction department, minor water resources department, etc.

"I want all officers to reach their respective offices by 9.30 am. Those who are found absent during my inspection, are immediately asked the reason for the absence", Mr Kumar told reporters after inspecting the offices of several departments at Visvesvaraya Bhawan.

The Chief Minister said from the year 2008 to 2012-13, he used to visit his office at the main secretariat at 9.30 am, on a regular basis. "Now, I have decided to visit government offices on a regular basis", he said.

Earlier, the Chief Minister on September 20 had inspected the main secretariat that houses the offices of key departments like Cabinet Secretariat, Home, General Administration, Finance, Planning and Development as well as the offices of chief secretary and development commissioner and additional chief secretaries.

He had said, "I will visit my office at the main secretariat three days a week and office at the CM secretariat two days a week and inspect the presence of officials". Though the Chief Minister had expressed his unhappiness over the absence of the officers and employees during his visit to the main secretariat, he did not take any punitive action against the absent staff.

Interpol Issues Red Corner Notice Against Wanted Khalistani Terrorist Karanvir Singh

The International Criminal Police Organization, commonly known as Interpol, on Monday issued a Red Corner Notice against Karanvir Singh, a member of the banned terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International.

Interpol updated its website by putting out a Red Corner Notice for the Khalistani terrorist.

Singh is believed to be hiding in Pakistan and was a member of the pro-Khalistan terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International, intelligence sources told news agency ANI.

As per the Interpol portal, 38-year-old Karanvir Singh has roots in Punjab's Kapurthala district.

Further, according to Interpol, Singh is wanted by India for criminal conspiracy, murder, offences related to the Arms Act, and Explosive Substances Act, raising funds for terrorist acts, conspiracy, and being a member of a terrorist gang or organisation.

A Red Corner Notice is a request to the law enforcement authorities of Interpol's member countries to find and temporarily detain a person until extradition, surrender, or a similar legal process can take place.

Earlier, Interpol issued a Red Notice to all member countries against gangster Himanshu alias Bhau, who is believed to be living abroad.

Giving details, a spokesperson of Haryana Police said Rohtak Police succeeded in getting a Red Corner Notice issued against a most wanted accused, who is believed to have fled abroad.

The Red Corner Notice against the wanted pro-Khalistani terrorist comes amid a diplomatic spat between New Delhi and Ottawa in the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's claim of an India hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

New Delhi dismissed the allegations, calling them 'absurd' and 'motivated'.

At a news conference in New York, the Canadian PM, however, failed to present any evidence to back his claim of Indian involvement in Nijjar's killing. Trudeau was repeatedly quizzed on the nature of the allegations but stuck to reiterating that there were "credible reasons" to believe that India was linked to Nijjar's death.

"There are credible reasons to believe that agents of the Government of India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil. That is ...there is something of utmost foundational importance in a country's rule of law in a world where international rules-based order matters," Trudeau said.

"We call upon the Government of India to take seriously this matter and to work with us to shed full transparency and ensure accountability and justice in this matter," the Canadian PM added.

According to CBC News, the Canadian government invested both human and signal intelligence in a months-long investigation into Nijjar's death. That intelligence includes communications involving Indian diplomats present in Canada.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday, however, said no information has been shared by Canada with regard to the killing of Nijjar.

"We are willing to look at any specific information that is provided to us, but so far we have received no specific information from Canada," Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said during a briefing.

A designated terrorist in India, Nijjar was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.

Speaking to reporters in Raipur, Bhupesh Baghel said," Passengers are not using these trains because the fares are high. The majority of the public uses passenger trains but they are getting shut down. The PM is inaugurating railway corridors but it is not for the people, it is for 'dropping' coal."

He further questioned the motive behind the flagging off of trains by the Prime Minister and said, "The Railway Minister has no work. He is only sent when there is an accident."

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off nine Vande Bharat Express trains, and said that the speed and scale of infrastructure development are matching with aspirations of 140 crore Indians.

The new trains are Udaipur – Jaipur Vande Bharat Express, Tirunelveli-Madurai- Chennai Vande Bharat Express, Hyderabad –Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express, Vijayawada – Chennai (via Renigunta) Vande Bharat Express, Patna – Howrah Vande Bharat Express, Kasaragod - Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express, Rourkela - Bhubaneswar – Puri Vande Bharat Express, Ranchi – Howrah Vande Bharat Express and Jamnagar-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express.

These Vande Bharat trains will be the fastest trains along the routes of their operation and will help save considerable time for the passengers.

Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement said that the introduction of these Vande Bharat trains will herald a new standard of rail service in the country.

"These trains, equipped with world-class amenities and advanced safety features, including Kavach technology, will be a key step towards providing modern, speedy and comfortable means of travel to common people, professionals, businessmen, student community and tourists," the statement said.

Will Axar Recover In Time For WC? Report Provides Massive Injury Update

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be available for the third ODI against Australia after being given a one-match break but all-rounder Axar Patel will be given a few more days to recover from his quadricep tear ahead of the World Cup, BCCI sources said on Monday. While Ravichandran Ashwin has done decently in his two outings, the team management is still bullish about the fitness of Axar, the left-arm spin bowling all-rounder. "The team management wants to give Axar full chance of recovery. His forearm and finger bruises have healed but may be in another few days, he would get fit for World Cup. India's first match is on September 8 and hence there is time.

"As far as Ashwin is concerned, we now know that he is match fit and in rhythm. If Axar can't make it, Ashwin walks in," a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The final squad announcement is on September 27 and it is understood that Axar still remains the team management's top choice for the reserve spinner's slot ahead of the Tamil Nadu veteran.

It is understood that young batting star Shubhman Gill and bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur have been given a few days rest ahead of the third ODI in Rajkot on Wednesday.

"As per rotation policy of the team, Bumrah, who was given a couple of days off to freshen up is back along with skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav. Gill, who has been playing continuously gets to cool his heels for 3-4 days along with Shardul Thakur," the source added.

Ruturaj, Mukesh released for Asian Games

India's Asian Games cricket team captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who played the first two ODIs, have been released from the squad as he will link up with the Hangzhou-bound outfit. Also released is pacer Mukesh Kumar, who came as cover for Bumrah, who was given a break.

It is understood that Washington Sundar is also suppose to leave on the evening of the game or day after.

While the Indian World Cup-bound team won't have any travelling net bowlers, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Mukesh Kumar will be summoned as and when required.

After Sparring, BJP Leader Backs Shrikant Shinde As 2024 Candidate

Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Ravindra Chavan on Sunday said sitting Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde will be the NDA nominee for the same seat in the next elections and he would emerge victorious.

Chavan's support to the candidature of Shrikant Shinde, son of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, comes against the backdrop of sparring between local leaders of ruling Shiv Sena and BJP over the candidature for this constituency and it indicates BJP's bid to pacify the ally.

Notably, Chavan and some local BJP leaders had fired veiled barbs at the CM and the Kalyan MP in the past over the Kalyan seat, which falls under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

"There should not be any doubt that we will be working to ensure the victory of NDA (National Democratic Alliance) candidate in all the upcoming elections. Shrikant Shinde is currently a Lok Sabha member from the Kalyan constituency. He will be the NDA nominee from the same constituency and he will win the election," Chavan told a regional news channel.

He also reiterated the BJP's long-pending demand for sharing the mayoral post of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, where elections are pending.

"It was earlier decided to share the seats though the BJP and Shiv Sena had contested local elections separately in 2017. But in post-2019 assembly elections, the seat of mayor was not shared with the BJP. We will make a request this time to allocate the mayor's post to the BJP post the civic elections," Chavan added.

2 Newborns Die Of 'Cold' In UP Clinic, Doctor Arrested: Cops

Two newborns died at a private clinic in Shamli district on Sunday allegedly because they were kept in a room that was too cold, police said.

The families of the newborns alleged that the owner of the clinic -- Dr Neetu -- on Saturday had kept the air conditioner on overnight because he wanted to sleep well. The babies were found dead the next morning.

SHO (Kairana) Netrapal Singh said on a complaint filed by the families of the children, a case under section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC has been registered against Neetu.

He has been arrested, the SHO said.

Meanwhile, the health department has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Additional Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) Dr Ashvani Sharma said strict action will be taken against those found guilty in this case.

According to the complaint, the babies were born in the government primary health centre in Kairana on Saturday and later shifted to the private clinic on the same day.

They were kept at the phototherapy unit for treatment. Dr Neetu switched on the air conditioner for sleeping on Saturday night, and both the children were found dead the next morning at the unit when their families went to see them, they said.

The families of the victims protested over the incident and demanded strict action against Neetu.

Watch: Warner Turns Right-Hander vs Ashwin, Stuns Everyone With Sweep Shot

David Warner is well-known for his switch hits against spinners but against Ravichandran Ashwin during the second ODI between India and Australia on Sunday, he decided to start batting right-handed. He started his innings as a left-hander but during the 13th over of the Australia innings, he decided to take a right-hander's stance. He played the first delivery lightly for a single but on the next occasion, he unleased a brilliant sweep shot that raced to the fine-leg boundary. The shot and his decision to turn into a right-hander left everyone stunned and Pat Cummins was left in splits by the ongoing events.

Australia were set a revised target of 317 in 33 overs against India after rain disrupted the proceedings. Chasing India's mammoth 399, Australia were 56 for 2 when rain stopped play with David Warner (26) and Marnus Labuschagne (17) at the crease at the Holkar stadium.

As many as 11 overs were lost due to the rain interruption.

It was the second instance as rain had interrupted play during India's innings as well when the hosts were at 79 for one in 9.5 overs

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer hit brisk centuries as India posted a mammoth 399-5.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed an unbeaten 72 off just 37 balls and captain KL Rahul chipped in with a quickfire 52 to join in the batting feast in the day-night game at Indore.

India, the number one ranked ODI team, are looking to seal the three-match series after winning the opening game in Mohali by five wickets.

The short series is serving as a tune-up for the sides before India host the marquee World Cup tournament at home next month.

Russia Minister Dismisses Ukraine Peace Plan, UN Bid To Revive Grain Deal

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that Ukraine's proposed peace plan as well as the latest UN proposals to revive the Black Sea grain initiative were both "not realistic."

Lavrov spoke at a press conference after a week of intense global diplomacy at the annual gathering of world leaders at UN headquarters in New York where Ukraine and its Western allies sought to drum up support for Kyiv.

"It is completely not feasible," Lavrov said of a 10-point peace blueprint promoted by Kyiv.

"It is not possible to implement this. It's not realistic and everybody understands this, but at the same time, they say this is the only basis for negotiations."

He said the conflict would be resolved on the battlefield if Kyiv and its Western allies stuck to that stance.

Lavrov added that Moscow left the Black Sea grain initiative because promises made to Russia - including removing sanctions on a Russian bank and reconnecting it to the global SWIFT system - had not been met.

He said the latest UN proposals to revive that export corridor for Ukrainian agricultural products were "simply not realistic".

Chicago Mom Strangled In Garage Allegedly By 63-Year-Old Boyfriend

Sierra Jamison, a health care worker and mother of a 6-year-old boy, was found dead inside a garage near her home in Chicago on Monday, US media said quoting cops.

Jamison was strangled by her boyfriend, 63-year-old Lawrence Boyle, who was arrested Wednesday, news agency HuffPost reported quoting Chicago Police officials.

On Monday evening, Jamison told her mother that she was going to park her Jeep. It was then that she was murdered by her boyfriend, said cops.

Boyle was already waiting for Jamison at the garage.

Boyle was already waiting for Jamison at the garage.

Boyle, who was already waiting for Jamison at the garage, allegedly strangled her, took her phone and covered her body with a tarp, cops said further.

When Jamison did not return home and was unresponsive to calls and texts, her mother asked her brother to check on her, the report said.

Her brother claims he found Boyle outside the garage with Jamison's phone.

Boyle claimed that she had thrown it at him and left to go to the store, according to charging documents from the Chicago Police Department, the news agency report added.

Not convinced by Boyle's story, Jamison's mother then went to inspect the garage herself, where she found her daughter's body under the tarp, it said.

After leaving the garage, Boyle called his ex-wife and confessed strangling Jamison, according to the police document.

On Wednesday, Boyle turned himself in.

Boyle and Jamison had been friends for around a decade but they began dating a few weeks ago.

Sadina Jamison, Sierra's aunt, told CBS Chicago that Boyle had been someone Sierra had trusted and who "she was comfortable around" and had "no reason to fear."

Sierra Jamison was killed just a month after speaking out about violence against Black women.

Jamison was the victim of an attempted carjacking but bravely fought off the perpetrator. A group of women in the area came to her aid and she was able to escape unscathed.

She shared her experiences with news channel CBS Chicago, hoping her story would empower other Black women who had been victims of violent crimes.

She told the outlet: "They literally stepped in and helped me. It was a lot of Black empowerment, women empowerment, that day."

Dravid's Son Walks Illustrious Dad's Path, Picked For Vinoo Mankad Trophy

Rahul Dravid, Indian cricket team head coach, is under focus ahead of the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup. India have not won the marquee event since the 2011 Cricket World Cup, when MS Dhoni's men won the trophy after a great title clash against Sri Lanka. Rahul Dravid, who himsekd has been part of several Cricket World Cups as a player, is in charge of guiding the Rohit Sharma-led team to the ultimate glory. If Rahul Dravid can help the Indian cricket team win the 2023 Cricket World Cup as a coach, it will add another glorious chapter to his already illustrious career.

Ahead of the Cricket World Cup, Dravid family household had a good news. Dravid's son Samit has been selected for Karnataka's 15-member squad for the upcoming Vinoo Mankad Trophy, according to Sportstar. The U-19 tournament will be held in Hyderabad from October 12 to 20.

Recently, Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been rested as the team wanted them to be fresh mentally and physically for the Cricket World Cup 2023. India will take on Australia in a three-match ODI series, starting from the first ODI at Mohali on Thursday. It will be India's final assignment before the ICC Cricket World Cup at home from October 5 onwards. "It is one of those series, where you have seen that some of our boys are not playing the first two games. We will rotate our pacers a bit. It will be nice for some other guys that they are given this opportunity to play three tough games before the World Cup," said Dravid in a pre-match press conference.

"I think with people like Rohit and Virat, from our perspective, it is important that they reach the first game of the World Cup with the physical and mental headspace they want to be in. With the amount of cricket they have played, they know how to prepare themselves for these big games. A lot of these decisions are discussed with them. We discuss with them how they would like to prepare leading up to big events. Based on these discussions, we come up with these mutual decisions," he added.

On the return of spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin to the ODI set-up after a year, Dravid clarified that the spinner was always in the plans.

"Having someone of Ashwin's experience is always good for us. He gives you experience, the ability to contribute with the bat at number eight. He is someone we taught about in case of an injury or an opportunity opened up. He was always in our plans. He has not played much ODI cricket for a while, but someone of his experience can deal with that," said the coach.

Pay Credit Suisse $1 Million Monthly For 6 Months: Supreme Court To SpiceJet

The Supreme Court on Friday asked low cost airline SpiceJet to pay USD 1 million per month for six months to global investment bank and financial services firm Credit Suisse AG towards repayment of dues.

The airline is already paying USD 0.5 million as monthly instalment to the Swiss firm.

The court's direction followed a request by senior advocate Kapil Sibal to a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah to allow the airline to pay USD 1 million per month in order to clear part of the arrears in six months. The court said the airline can resume paying USD 0.5 million to the Swiss firm from the seventh month.

The bench posted the matter for further hearing on October 20.

SpiceJet in its statement said, "The Supreme Court has noted our compliance with its previous orders and agreed with our proposal to pay the USD 3 million arrears over the next 6 months. This is a positive outcome for the company and our stakeholders, and we are grateful to the Court for its understanding. We are committed to paying our dues in full and on time. We remain fully committed to upholding the highest standards of compliance and look forward to continuing our positive engagement with all stakeholders."

The top court had on September 11 warned SpiceJet of consequences if it did not clear its dues and directed it to pay USD 1.5 million by September 15.

According to the Swiss firm, SpiceJet had availed the services of SR Technics, Switzerland, for maintenance, repair, and overhaul of aircraft engines, modules, components, assemblies, and parts which were mandatory for its operations.

An agreement for such services was entered into between SpiceJet and SR Technics on November 24, 2011 for 10 years. The terms of payments were also agreed upon.

SR Technics had given Credit Suisse the right to receive payments from SpiceJet for the services.

The court had on July 25 given additional time to SpiceJet to make the payment to Credit Suisse as per the consent terms agreed upon by the two parties.

The top court was hearing a plea by the Swiss firm seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Singh and SpiceJet over "a wilful and intentional disobedience" of court orders and failure to pay dues as per a settlement between the two sides.

On August 14, the bench, while issuing contempt notices to SpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh and SpiceJet, had noted the submission of the Swiss firm that the court had granted indulgence and withdrawn the airline from liquidation only in view of the consent terms dated May 23, 2022 by which USD 500,000 was to be paid every month by the low cost carrier to the company from July 15, 2020.

"It was submitted that, though as of now more than 6.5 million US dollars has to be deposited, but only a little over 2 million US dollars has been deposited," the bench had noted the submission of counsel appearing for Credit Suisse in its August 14 order.

SpiceJet and Credit Suisse had told the Supreme Court on August 18, 2022 about the resolution of their financial dispute which led to the withdrawal of an appeal by the low-cost airline against a Madras High Court order for its winding up due to alleged non-payment of dues to the Swiss firm.

"There is a settlement which has taken place on May 23, 2022, as per the consent terms. In view of it, both the parties are satisfied with the settlement and want to withdraw the SLP (special leave petition) filed by the petitioner.

"Accordingly, the application is allowed," the top court had said in its order.

On the appeal of SpiceJet, the top court had on January 28, 2022 stayed the publication of the winding up notice and the order directing the official liquidator attached to the Madras High Court to take over the assets of the airline.

It had also asked SpiceJet to resolve the financial dispute with the Swiss firm.

This Dog's Dance And Sand Art Will Tempt You In

A video of a happy dog is always a source of delight for many users on social media. It's adorable to watch dogs display their happiness in such a wonderful way. A Reddit post featuring a clip of a dog dancing alone and forming patterns in the sand is an excellent example of this. The caption of the Reddit post reads, "Doggo dancing and drawing a line on the beach." The video begins with a beautiful beach backdrop and a vivid blue sea in the distance. The dog leaps and twirls, creating a sense of delight through its movements. Additionally, the dog is seen drawing lines in the sand. The cheerful background music accompanying the clip adds to the video's attractiveness even more.

The video was posted two days ago, and so far, it has received more than 3,200 upvotes. It has also garnered several comments.

"Doggo owns that beach," commented one Reddit user.

"More passion, more energy, more footwork," posted another.

"My side. Your side. If I get wet, soggy, or seaweed-smelly, do not follow. I'll meet you back in your clean car," wrote a third.

"I need an aerial view of the finished product," a fourth person requested.

"Oh my god, that's so cute," remarked a fifth

"He's just having so much fun!" wrote a sixth person.

Another wonderful video that had gone viral on social media earlier, showed a dog leaping with joy after being freed from its leash by its owner at a beach. The dog had gone to the beach with its owner where she unlocked its belt.

The video further showed the dog running around, not ready to stop after experiencing freedom. The text superimposed on the video said: "What does freedom feel like?"

In the clip, the dog was seen taking many rounds as it didn't want to stop playing on the sand.

Pet dog videos are a common sight on social media platforms. One such viral video showed the dog owner first venturing into the snow to educate social media fans about the weather conditions. Her black pug makes an appearance in the video, dressed in a bright red blazer.

When the black pug's paws come into contact with the snow, it immediately turns around and rushes back inside.

TDP Boycotts Andhra Assembly, Council Sessions Over Suspension Of MLAs

Citing various reasons such as the suspension of TDP MLAs for "frivolous" causes, party state president Kinjarapu Atchannaidu on Friday said the opposition party has boycotted the rest of the sessions of both the legislative assembly and the legislative council.

Mr Naidu said Speaker Tammineni Sitaram did not consider the demands of TDP during the session, including a written request as some of the reasons for the boycott decision.

He also alleged that there was selective media coverage of the Andhra Pradesh assembly session.

"They did not even consider our demands and our written request was not even read. So, we boycotted and came out. Until this session ends, we have decided not to attend the assembly and council," said Mr Naidu, addressing a press conference.

The assembly sessions will end on Wednesday, September 27.

According to the opposition party leader, for just 28 TDP members, 200 marshals were deployed in the house, who allegedly blocked their view and kept them in the dark on the goings on there.

Further, he alleged that only Sakshi TV reporters were allowed into the house, who selectively covered the session, publicising more of the ruling party members and less of TDP leaders, especially when Hindupur MLA N Balakrishna whistled.

Mr Naidu alleged that the Speaker was behaving in a dictatorial manner.

TDP leaders adopted a democratic approach and used their cell phones to relay the happenings in the House to debunk the selective coverage, he added.

Considering all these developments and the suspension of TDP MLAs Naidu and B Ashok, the opposition party leader said they have decided to boycott the rest of the sessions of both houses.

Besides these suspensions, TDP leaders Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary, Nimmala Ramanaidu and Velagapudi Ramakrishnababu were also suspended.

Meanwhile, during a discussion in the assembly on skill training in the erstwhile TDP government, Finance Minister Buggana Rajendranath informed the house that training courses with a duration of three weeks were completed within five days.

He alleged that the TDP government had played with the future of students and fooled the state under the guise of skill training, an alleged scam which is rocking the state now.

Delhi Woman Pours Acid On Daughter-In-Law, Arrested: Cops

A 49-year-old woman was arrested on Friday for allegedly attacking her daughter-in-law with acid in their house in northeast Delhi's New Usmanpur area, the police said.

Anjali allegedly attacked her 22-year-old daughter-in-law with acid on Wednesday. The woman suffered 25 per cent burn injuries and is currently hospitalised, they said.

The incident took place on Wednesday in their house in New Usmanpur here, where the victim lives on the second floor and her in-laws reside on the ground floor, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Joy Tirkey said.

The victim has been married for the past two years and has a six-month-old daughter, he added.

Anjali had filed a suit for eviction against her daughter-in-law in Karkardooma Court, Mr Tirkey said.

On Wednesday, both parties attended a court hearing on the matter. After returning to their house, Anjali, in a fit of rage, attacked her daughter-in-law and poured acid on her, he added.

The woman's in-laws, including the accused, fled after the incident and took shelter at an acquaintance's house in the Sant Nagar area of Burari, from where Anjali was arrested on Friday, the police said.

The 22-year-old victim was rushed to the JPC Hospital from where she was referred to the LNJP Hospital and is still being treated for acid burns, the DCP said.

Based on the victim's statement, an FIR under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 326A (causing grievous hurt by use of acid), and 34 (common intentions) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused at New Usmanpur police station, he added.

The case is under investigation and more arrests are likely in the case, the DCP said.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the police on Thursday seeking an action-taken report on the matter, along with a copy of the FIR.

Opinion: Regime-Change Attempts in Bangladesh? PM Sheikh Hasina Thinks So

In April, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina accused the United States of pursuing a regime change in her nation. "They are trying to eliminate democracy and introduce a government that will not have a democratic existence," she said. This came on the back of the US castigating India's neighbour for human rights abuses. Despite the country having done well economically under Sheikh Hasina, reports of discontent against the ruling Awami League were shared in American political circles. However, PM Hasina's allegations seem to have found purchase as India has cautioned the US about interference in Bangladeshi elections.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced visa restrictions on Bangladeshi officials in June, and was met with assurances and arguments from Sheikh Hasina's government. While a country reserves the right to offer entry to foreign visitors, government officials involved in trade and policy are often issued tangible reasoning for being denied access instead of unilateral accusations of participating in "democratic backsliding". At the same time, members of the Bangladeshi government wrote to Blinken with video evidence of Bangladesh's opposition vowing to obstruct elections, and requesting that the new American visa policy towards Bangladeshi officials apply equally to establishment and opposition. It may be seen as hypocritical that no official representative of the US is concerned about actual obstructions to free and fair elections in a democracy, as long as they stem from an opposition.

With trade and exports as a matter of constant discussion between governments, Dhaka has been forced to issue statements to mollify the US government, while also accusing them of fomenting unrest with the intent to change the government at the Centre. The US had previously imposed sanctions on officers of Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Bangladesh Police in 2021. The same year, the US did not invite the Asian democracy to their Summit for Democracy. Earlier this year, however, senior state official Donald Lu was in Dhaka and suggested that the sanctions had made a difference, and that the RAB had been reigned in by US action.

Interestingly, the American castigation of the Islamic nation does not consider religious fundamentalism to be an issue. Despite the continued destruction of temples that exemplify the country's recent past as well as the significant but rapidly dwindling Hindu population, the American State Department chooses to instead cite the Rohingya refugee situation, in addition to internal political tussles. It is worth noting that Priya Saha, a minority Hindu woman who had the chance to bring up the persecution of minorities before former US President Donald Trump in 2019, was about to be charged with sedition in her home country. PM Sheikh Hasina disapproved of the move by her government to file charges against her, at the last minute. While the Bangladesh-America relationship has seen its fair share of challenges, attempts to improve ties with the Bangladeshi democracy were underway before the Biden administration took over, and engagement was less than adversarial. The change in the US administration in 2020 has brought forth renewed complications. Accusations of a regime change by a sitting Prime Minister are hardly trivial.

The US now cites accusations by the Bangladeshi Opposition, the Bangladeshi Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Khaleda Zia, as further proof of political persecution. Citing opposition talking points in a democratic nation by an international entity lends credence to suspicions of foreign interference by any nation. Considering American involvement in "Color Revolutions" around the world, it is not unlikely that democratic nations fear there may be similar attempts on their soil. Selfies in the background of the recently concluded G20 meeting in New Delhi featuring PM Hasina and her daughter Saima Wazed with American President Joe Biden have found mention in several reports; however, they come without any solid conclusions about attempts to reset ties between both democracies.

With the Biden administration placing Bangladesh in its crosshairs, one looming fear is that this only helps its largest trading partner China come ever closer. While the Sheikh Hasina - Narendra Modi camaraderie is well-known, India is in no position to substitute China's role in Bangladesh's economy. The Bangladesh-China trade is almost three times the size of Bangladesh-India trade at this time, although Sheikh Hasina is known to have requested India to ensure the supply of essentials to its neighbour.

Unlike Canada, Bangladesh enjoyed a bilateral meeting with the Indian administration to discuss enhanced connectivity, trade and the repatriation of Rohingya to Myanmar, among other issues. The non-fundamentalist Hasina government has worked towards a more stable Indian subcontinent and is strategically important to countering Chinese inroads in the region. However, the US currently seems to believe that antagonizing the Hasina government is a chance worth taking, even in the face of continued Chinese belligerence in the region.

Puppet governments benefit only western corporates in the long term, as may be seen from history. Citizens are left bereft of means to address concerns, and whole nations remain fraught in poverty or war, often both. Democracy is a serious attempt at ensuring that the will of a people is exercised, and can only be based on free and fair elections. If a nation as powerful as the United States of America chooses to wield their immense diplomatic, media and trade power to undermine elections in a sovereign democracy halfway across the world, they will only bolster claims of democracy functioning as a reason to subdue. All democracies are imperfect democracies, and while the US is a valuable example of a sufficiently functional democracy, it cannot claim leadership of the free world by favouring undemocratic alliances in other democracies. The people of Bangladesh have the right to continue to choose their own leaders through democratic means. The world will keep watch and weigh Sheikh Hasina's assurances of free and fair elections as they approach in 2024, but in the meantime, American heckling will be seen as an explicit threat of regime change.

CBI Books Kendriya Vidyalaya Principal For Admitting 193 Students On Fake Certificates

The CBI has booked the principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Waltair, for allegedly admitting 193 ineligible students on the basis of fake service certificates purportedly issued by various Central government departments by taking bribes from their parents, officials said Thursday.

The CBI has registered two FIRs against Principal S Sreenivasa Raja pertaining to the admission of 124 ineligible students during the academic year 2022-23 and 69 such students for 2021-22, they said.

The agency has alleged that Raja conspired with the parents of ineligible students, provided admission to them into various classes without verifying the applications and service certificates, and received undue pecuniary advantage to his bank accounts with the State Bank of India and the Union Bank of India through UPI mode.

The irregularities were detected by the CBI during a joint surprise check conducted by its Visakhapatnam unit on May 3 and 4 this year at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Waltair, in order to verify the admissions provided by Raja for 2022-23.

"Raja conspired with the parents of ineligible students and provided admissions to ineligible students of various classes...and received a pecuniary advantage in lieu of providing the admissions," the FIR said.

The action against Raja was initiated after getting sanction from the commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan.

Justin Trudeau's "Credible Allegation" Comment After India's Counterattack

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday reiterated that there are "credible allegations" that should be taken "extremely seriously" as he urged the government of India to work with his country to allow justice to follow its course in the killing of a Khalistani extremist leader.

"We call upon the government of India to take this matter seriously and to work with us to shed full transparency and ensure accountability and justice in this matter," he said while responding to questions on the diplomatic row between India and Canada.

"We are a country of the rule of law. We are going to continue to do the work necessary to keep Canadians safe and to uphold our values and the international rules based order. That's our focus right now," Mr Trudeau said when asked whether his government will take any retaliatory measures following India's suspension of visa services for Canadians.

Tensions flared between India and Canada early this week following Mr Trudeau's explosive allegations of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on his country's soil on June 18 in British Columbia. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

India angrily rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case.

"Of course, there are credible allegations that we need to take extremely seriously as Canadians and indeed as a world," Mr Trudeau asserted when asked if the evidence suggested by him was extensive in the matter.

Mr Trudeau also said that his government was not looking to provoke or cause problems.

"There is no question that India is a country of growing importance and a country that we need to continue to work with, not just in the region but around the world. We're not looking to provoke or cause problems. But we are unequivocal around the importance of the rule of law and unequivocal about the importance of protecting Canadians."

"That's why we call upon the government of India, to work with us to establish processes to discover and to uncover the truth of the matter and to allow justice and accountability to be served," he added.

On Thursday, India asked Canada to come down hard on terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil and suspended visa services for Canadians, as escalating tensions between the two nations over the killing of Nijjar pushed their ties to an all-time low.

India also asked Canada to downsize its diplomatic staff in the country, arguing that there should be parity in strength and rank equivalence in the mutual diplomatic presence. The size of Canadian diplomatic staff in India is larger than what New Delhi has in Canada.

Chandrayaan-3 Mission Cost Less Than Some Space Movies: Finance Minister

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said that the success of Chandrayaan-3 will have a big impact on India's industrial and technological ecosystem.

While speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Minister briefed the House about the Chandrayaan-3 mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

"In 1975, we launched our first satellite Aryabhatta with the help of the Soviet Union's (USSR). Now, the success of Chandrayaan-3 will have a big impact on India's industrial and technological ecosystem. Although we needed help from the Soviet Union to launch our first satellite Aryabhatta, today we have launched 431 foreign satellites for other countries till July 2023," Ms Sitharaman said in the Upper House.

The Minister also praised ISRO's innovative choices in the Chandrayaan-3 project, like choosing a route that allows a cost-effective and sustainable method of accomplishing the project.

"Chandrayaan-3 mission cost only around US $75 million (approximately). Our Chandrayaan-3 mission commanded a lesser budget than some movies made on space itself...," she said.

Notably, day 3 of the Parliament special session witnessed a debate on the women's reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, while the Rajya Sabha discussed India's space journey focusing on Chandrayaan-3's successful soft-landing on the moon.

India took a giant leap as the Chandrayaan-3 lander module successfully landed on the moon's South Pole on August 23, making it the first country to have achieved the historic feat and bringing to an end the disappointment over the crash landing of the Chandrayaan-2, four years ago.

After having landed, the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover performed different sets of tasks on the lunar surface, including finding the presence of sulphur and other minor elements, recording relative temperature, and listening to movements around it.

The stated objectives of Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission were a safe and soft landing, rover roving on the Moon's surface, and in-situ scientific experiments. Meanwhile, the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover are in "sleep mode", with awakening expected around September 22.
