"What If Same Spoon Is Used?": Sudha Murty's 'Veg-Non Veg' Remark Divides Internet

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty is yet again garnering attention online for her comments about her food habits. Appearing in a recent episode of YouTube series called 'Khaane Mein Kaun Hai', the wife of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy revealed that she is a pure vegetarian and hence one of her biggest concerns is the possibility of the same spoon being used for both vegetarian and non-veg food items.

Ms Murty mentioned that while she is adventurous when it comes to her work, she is not the same regarding her food choices. "I am a pure vegetarian, I don't even eat eggs, or garlic. What I am scared of is, that the same spoon will be used for both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. It weighs on my mind a lot!" Ms Murty admitted. She also said that when she travels abroad, she seeks out vegetarian restaurants or prepares her own meals. She carries her own bag of food and cooking items that can be easily heated in water, she said.

Ms Murty's comments have trigged various reactions online. While some internet users agreed that carrying food from home indeed is a good practice, others begged to differ.

"Many Indians pack food while travelling abroad. Food is a choice. #sudhamurthy is any elderly woman in our household who likes to chat," wrote one user. "We should not judge people based on their food preferences or other personal habits. Instead, we should focus on treating everyone with respect, regardless of their caste," said another.

"My mother , Aunt and even my wife takes food while travelling international as they are pure vegetarians. Even I prefer to eat home cooked food during travel," commented a third.

However, some users trolled the author for what they perceived as "selling" an overly simplistic lifestyle.

"Sudha Murthy's simplicity is becoming really irksome," wrote one user.

Another jokingly added, "On Foreign trips, Sudha Murthy carries her house along with her, what if the hotel room was used by another person..."

Meanwhile, in the YouTube video, Ms Murty revealed that her cooking bag comes with a "small cooker" which she uses to cook food. She even said that she would often pull her grandmother's legs for never eating outside and travelling with food items, but now, she behaves like her and carries her own food when she visits any foreign country.

Delhi's July Air Best In 5 Years, Average Maximum Temperature Also Dropped

Bountiful rains in July gave Delhi its best air quality for the month in five years, while the average maximum temperature also dropped to its lowest level since 2016, according to official data.

The data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) also shows that Delhi's average air quality index (AQI) this year so far is the lowest for the corresponding period since 2019, except for 2020 - the year of the COVID-19 lockdown.

The city recorded 384.6 mm of rainfall in July, which is the second-highest in the month in the last 15 years, compared to the normal of 195.8 mm.

It gauged above-normal rainfall in the last four months -- 53.2 mm against a normal of 17.4 mm in March, 20.1 mm against an average of 16.3 mm in April, 111 mm against a normal of 30.7 mm in May and 101.7 mm against a normal of 74.1 mm in June.

The city experienced its highest rainfall (153 mm) in a single day in July since 1982 on July 8-9 due to an interaction of a western disturbance, "monsoonal" winds and cyclonic circulation over northwest India. It received an additional 107 mm of rain in the subsequent 24 hours.

The average maximum temperature in July was 34.7 degrees Celsius, the lowest since 2016 when it was 34.5 degrees Celsius.

According to CPCB data, the average AQI of Delhi for the January-July period in 2023 was 182.6, showing a significant improvement compared to 209 in 2022, 204.7 in 2021, 159 in 2020, and 215.3 in 2019.

The average AQI in July was the lowest in five years. The AQI for July 2023 was 83.7, while it was 87.3 in 2022, 110.1 in 2021, 83.8 in 2020, and 134.1 in 2019.

On Saturday, Delhi recorded an average AQI of 59, the lowest so far this year.

According to the CPCB data, the daily average PM2.5 concentration in Delhi in July stood at 35 µg/m3, compared to 36 in 2022, 40 in 2021, 34 in 2020, and 47 in 2019.

Similarly, the daily average PM10 concentration for July 2023 was 77 µg/m3, in contrast to 82 in 2022, 107 in 2021, 77 in 2020, and 143 in 2019.

Delhi's significant improvement in air quality during July was reflected in the fact that all 31 days of the month recorded 'good to moderate' air quality.

Father Dies, 4-Year-Old Injured After Bouncy Castle Shot Into Air In France

A father died and his four-year-old daughter was badly injured in France after a bouncy castle in which they were playing at a water park was blown skyward by high winds, prosecutors said Monday.

The 35-year-old man had been taken to hospital with his child after the accident on Sunday at the water park in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume in France's southern Var region, hugely popular with tourists in the summer. He died later that day.

The structure, some 20 metres (65 feet) long, lifted 50 metres off the ground at the Wonderland Waterpark, with both victims trapped inside, the prosecutor for the nearby town of Draguignan said in a statement.

The daughter's life remains in danger, the prosecutor's office added. It said the bouncy castle had taken off due to "strong gusts of wind" that were buffeting the area at the time after a spell of hot weather.

An investigation has been opened into involuntary homicide.

Draguignan prosecutor Guy Bouchet told AFP that the management of the park had taken the decision to suspend the bouncy castle activity due to the weather at the very moment the accident happened.

"How can a water park that had been accepted on the municipal territory to bring joy and happiness to children be transformed into a machine of death that strikes down an entire family?" the local mayor Alain Decanis wrote on Facebook.

He vowed the investigation opened by prosecutors would provide answers. The child, like her father, had to be resuscitated after suffering cardiac arrest.

The Wonderland Waterpark opened only this summer some 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside the town of Aix-en-Provence.

Ex Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya Still Critical

The health condition of former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya remained critical but stable on Sunday evening, a doctor of a city-based hospital where he is undergoing treatment said.

The 79-year-old politician remained on mechanical ventilation, he said.

"Bhattacharya's health condition remained critical but stable on Sunday evening. He is on mechanical ventilation. Relevant conservative medical management is being continued. Oxygen saturation in his blood, as well as blood pressure, has improved.

"He is responding to the treatment but still is not out of danger. Our doctors closely monitored him and there was no major deterioration,” the doctor told PTI.

A multidisciplinary medical team, after re-examining Mr Bhattacharya, decided to conduct a CT scan of his thorax, he said, adding that it would be done on Monday.

"Blood pressure has improved and he is responding to treatment. We are hopeful that he will come out of this crisis," Mr Bhattacharya's cousin Malavika Chatterjee said.

Several leaders of the CPI(M), including Biman Bose, visited Mr Bhattacharya in the hospital.

The former chief minister was diagnosed with a lower respiratory tract infection and Type 2 respiratory failure.

Besides being on invasive ventilation, doctors are administering antibiotics and other supportive management.

On Saturday night, he was shifted to invasive ventilation from non-invasive one after his health condition deteriorated.

Mr Bhattacharya, who was the chief minister from 2000 to 2011, has been suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other old age-related ailments for quite some time.

He has been away from public life for the past few years due to his health condition.

Mr Bhattacharya stepped down from the CPI(M)'s politburo and the central committee in 2015 and gave up membership in the party's state secretariat in 2018.

Special Probe Team Formed To Investigate Kerala 5-Year-Old's Rape-Murder

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted by the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kerala's Aluva to investigate the alleged rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl, an official said.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Ernakulam Rural District Police Chief Vivek Kumar said that a team of around fourteen people has been formed for further probe into the case.

"Special investigation team has been formed under the leadership of Aluva DySP. ISHO Manjudas is the investigating officer. We have a team of around 14 people including SIs, ASIs, and Cyber experts," Mr Kumar said.

As per the doctor's statement, there were injuries to the private parts of the girl and the death was due to asphyxiation caused by strangulation, he added.

"The statement of the doctor, who conducted the autopsy of the child, said that there were injuries in the private parts and the death was due to asphyxiation caused by strangulation. The motive was the sexual gratification of the accused," he added.

The five-year-old girl, the daughter of migrant workers from Bihar, was kidnapped from near their house in Aluva in broad daylight on July 28.

She was later found murdered and sexually abused with several gruesome injuries at a dumping area at the Aluva market on Saturday.

The accused, who has been arrested, has been identified as Asafaq Alam (29), also from Bihar.

The Ernakulam Rural District Police chief, Vivek Kumar, said that the background check in the accused hometown in Bihar is underway.

"CCTV footage will be analysed in the coming days. There is no crime detail against the accused as of now. The background check in his native place is ongoing. After the proper official acknowledgement, we will get a proper reply from the Bihar Police," Vivek Kumar added.

The Kerala Police today posted an apology after facing criticism over their actions in the incident.

"Sorry daughter," the Kerala Police said in a tweet in Malayalam, adding, "Our efforts to bring her alive to her parents were unsuccessful. The suspect who kidnapped the child was arrested."

Prince William Serves Burgers To Shocked Diners. There's An India Connect

Britain's Prince William served up a surprise to diners in south London when he dished out environmentally-friendly burgers from a food truck.

In a video released on Sunday, the heir to the throne handed out "Earthshot Burgers" to highlight the work of last year's winners of his annual Earthshot Prize, which he set up to help develop solutions to major environmental problems.

"Coming right up," the prince said as he served up the burgers to the stunned customers. "Morning everyone, nicely cooked, ready to go."

The object for William, who had teamed up with the founders of the YouTube channel Sorted Food which reviews kitchen gadgets and shares recipes, was to raise the profile and work of three previous Earthshot prize winners.

"So the box you're about to eat in is built by a company called Notpla and there's no plastic involved, they've come up with a seaweed coating," the prince told the customers at the burger van.

"The ingredients inside the burger are grown from a greenhouse in India from a company called Kheyti, and last but not least, the way we cook them has been on a thing called Mukuru Clean Stoves, and that is designed by a lady in Kenya who came up with the concept to reduce air pollution."

He added: "Can't vouch for the taste, the quality but ... I'm rolling with it."

'Barbie Feet Challenge' Has Left Health Experts Concerned. Here's Why

The highly-anticipated movie 'Barbie' starring Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling which was released on July 21, is making a splash at the theatres globally. The Barbie mania is taking over, and people, companies, brands and everyone else is jumping on the pink bandwagon. The movie has also given rise to several viral trends across all social media platforms. One such trend is called the 'Barbie Feet Challenge', inspired by a particular scene from the movie.

The challenge involves recreating a scene from the movie where Margot Robbie's character slips out of her heels and stands on the tips of her toes, while her heels remain in the air. To ace the challenge, women are attempting to step out of high heels, walk on tiptoes, and maintain their feet in an arched position.

The hashtags #BarbieFeet and #BarbieFeetChallenge have garnered a combined total of over 80 million views on the platform, and search interest for “Barbie Foot Challenge” increased 2,950% over the course of one week, Foot, Ankle & Leg Vein Center reported, according to the New York Post.

Even American model Chrissy Teigen hopped onto the bandwagon.

However, health experts are now raising concerns about the potential dangers associated with the viral trend.

“Although the Barbie Arch makes a woman's legs appear longer and toner, it is not without risk. If someone attempts the pose once or twice, they will likely be ok and produce a great TikTok video. However, if attempting the pose and stride over long periods, there are some risks involved. The ankle is unstable, which can lead to ligament sprains and injuries, commonly seen with high heel use,” Dr. Jodi R. Schoenhaus told The Post.

The high-arched position of the Barbie foot could also lead to muscle and spine problems as it puts strain on the lower back. It can also damage growth plates, a warning to younger girls who are still growing, she added.

''To walk on your toes without heels isn't sustainable, and, in fact, the reality in the movie is that Barbie actually has flatfeet, along with 30% of the population. Considering we aren't trained ballerinas en pointe, let's keep the fad to movie stars who have props and multiple takes to make it look perfect,” she said further.

Notably, 'Barbie' is a live-action retelling made by reimagining the toy figurine. Everything in the film - from the costumes to the sets - is drenched in trademark Barbie pink colour.

10 Cops Injured After Violence Erupted During Muharram Procession In Delhi

A section of people taking out Muharram processions clashed with police and pelted stones at them, injuring around 10 cops and damaging several vehicles, after they were stopped from changing the designated route in west Delhi's Nangloi on Saturday, officials said.

The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the "unruly crowd", they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Harendra Singh said, "Several 'tazia' processions were being carried out in Nagloi area and around eight to ten thousand people participated in them. One or two organisers became unruly and tried to divert their procession route which was earlier decided." "When police objected to it, they started pelting stones at police personnel. In order to control them, police resorted to a mild lathicharge and dispersed them from the area," Singh said.

According to the police, around 10 personnel received minor injuries and some police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting.

The situation in the area is under control, the police said.

Some purported videos of the incident were circulated on social media.

In the videos, some people in the area are seen pelting stones causing damage to public vehicles, including buses, and private cars.

In one of the videos, police are seen resorting to lathicharge.

Muslims take out "tazia" processions on Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. "Tazia" is a miniature replica of the tomb of Imam Hussain.

Jaffer's 'Pathaan' Twist To Kohli, Rohit Not Playing Second ODI vs WI

As Hardik Pandya came out at the toss for the second ODI against West Indies in Barbados, there was anticipation in the air. The stand-in captain then clarified that indeed Rohit Sharma was not playing along with Virat Kohli. India managed to clinch the first match after facing a few challenges. Ishan Kishan performed exceptionally well with the bat to help India chase down a total of 114. The visitors would be keen to clinch the series with a second consecutive win.

India stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya said during the time of toss, "We were looking to bat first. We want to see how much we can score on this pitch which is a bit up and down. Rohit and Virat have been playing constant cricket, so they are resting in this game. They can be fresh for the third ODI. I think when you get someone out for 115, it's a good sign. Our catching was impressive, but we can improve in certain areas. Sanju and Axar come in for Rohit and Virat."

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer gave a funny twist to the duo not playing. "Rohit and Virat watching from the dressing room. #WIvIND" he posted with a picture if Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan from the movie 'Pathaan'.

WI Skipper Shai Hope said during the time of toss, "We are going to bowl first, we saw what happened in the last game. The conditions will assist the bowlers. We got two games to play, so we got to win this one to stay alive. It has been a bit unpredictable. Both teams have to play on the same surface. We got to bowl first and put them under pressure. Powell, Drakes is out, Alzarri and Keacy are in."

West Indies (Playing XI): Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Alick Athanaze, Shai Hope(w/c), Shimron Hetmyer, Keacy Carty, Romario Shepherd, Yannic Cariah, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales

India (Playing XI): Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan(w), Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya(c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar.

Nothing Will Happen By Changing Name: Amit Shah Slams Opposition Front

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday slammed the Congress and its allies, including the DMK, saying nothing would happen by changing the name of their alliance to INDIA.

He was addressing a rally here, ahead of kick-starting Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai's state-wide 'En Mann, En Makkal (My Land, My People)' padayatra.

"When Congress and its allies, including the DMK, go to the people seeking votes, the public would remember the corruption, including the 2G scam and CommonWealth Games scam during the UPA regime, " he said.

"Congress-DMK and allies opposed the removal of Art 370; is Kashmir ours or not," he asked.

Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Tamil pitch, he said PM Modi honoured Tamil culture by installing the 'sengol' in the new parliament building.

The senior BJP leader hit out at the DMK regime, calling it the most corrupt in the nation and said the BJP's yatra is an attempt to usher in politics of development and good governance in Tamil Nadu.

Mr Shah named Congress and its allies one by one, including the DMK, Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), and accused them all of trying to empower their families and not the nation.

"Sonia Gandhi wants to make her son Rahul the Prime Minister, M K Stalin wants to make his son Udhayanidhi the Chief Minister."

The BJP top leader also criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray as leaders who desired to see their heirs in leadership positions.

"However, PM Modi is the only leader who is working for the nation's development," he said.

Mr Shah also raised the issue of an accused person who is in jail continuing as a minister in Tamil Nadu. "Stalin should be ashamed of retaining V Senthil Balaji, arrested in an Enforcement Directorate case and in jail, in the cabinet," the union minister said.

"Can a person in jail continue as a minister," he asked. "Should Senthil Balaji not have resigned? Even if Senthil Balaji resigns, Stalin will not accept it because he is afraid that all secrets will be disclosed." Mr Shah said a single tweet of BJP state chief Annamalai has rattled the DMK regime, a reference to the state BJP leader's allegations of corruption vis-a-vis the 'DMK Files'.

"Imagine what will happen when Annamalai takes the yatra across the state," he asked.

Mr Shah later flagged off the 'En Mann, En Makkal' padayatra alongside state BJP president K Annamalai. The yatra, which will go on for six months, marks the start of BJP's poll campaign ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The yatra will cover all 234 assembly constituencies in the State.

Twitter Slammed For Reinstating Account That Posted Child Sex Abuse Image

Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, is facing criticism after reinstating a right-wing account that had previously been suspended for posting images of child sexual abuse.

The account in question, Dom Lucre, with nearly 600,000 followers was banned after he posted two screenshots of a video depicting child sexual abuse on July 22. The post was about Peter Scully, an Australian man sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing children.

Four days later, Mr. Lucre was suspended from the platform four days later, as Twitter's policy indicates “zero tolerance towards any material that features or promotes child sexual exploitation.''

Soon after, Mr. Lucre's right-wing supporters complained about it and demanded his reinstatement.

Responding to the outrage, Mr. Musk wrote, ''Only people on our CSE team have seen those pictures. For now, we will delete those posts and reinstate the account.''

The decision to reinstate the account attracted considerable criticism from a lot of users.

"Have been tagged a few times on this one, so let me just say: It's insane to write 'we have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation' while also arbitrarily reinstating accounts that share CSAM," Yoel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and safety, posted on the social media site BlueSky on Wednesday.

Earlier, the social media site was blocked in Indonesia for violating local pornography and gambling laws.

Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Informatics in a statement said that the site was restricted as the domain had been previously used by sites that did not adhere to the country's strict laws against "negative" content such as pornography and gambling.

Mumbai-Based CEO Says He Paid Rs 100 For 500 Metre Auto Ride In Bengaluru

Needless to say, travelling by autorickshaws in Bengaluru is an expensive affair. Many times, auto drivers in Bengaluru end up quoting exorbitant fares for short rides, upsetting commuters. In a similar instance, the CEO of a Mumbai-based company took to X, formerly Twitter, to share his experience of travelling in an auto, in Bengaluru.

Mandar Natekar, co-founder and CEO of NeuralGarage, complained that auto drivers in the city don't charge fares by the meter. He further said that he had to shell out Rs 100 for a mere 500-meter ride in the city.

He wrote, ''In this photo, you will see the most ornamental thing in Bengaluru. The great Auto Meter. So expensive that it never gets used. I just paid 100Rs for a 500 mtrs ride. To give perspective, in Mumbai 100Rs is the meter fare for approx 9 km.''

He also added a picture of the vehicle's meter and called this experience a "peak Bengaluru" moment.

See the tweet here:

Twitter users resonated with his tweet and shared similar experiences. Vijay Koshy, president, TVF, commented, ''It's practically the same for every city outside Mumbai. Chennai is notorious for its auto rides.''

Replying to him, Mr. Natekar said, ''It is ridiculous, to say the least, but seems like this highway robbery is not legit. No one bothers.''

A second user wrote ''Very few cities have auto-meter fare system. Mumbai and Palakkad are the only two cities I am aware of. Nothing can be done either.''

A third added, ''Mumbai is the only place in India, where rickshaws function properly on meter. The rest of India is all about loot.''

A fourth remarked, ''Count your blessings. Most of the time, they don't wish to go anywhere.''

Last year, the Karnataka government raised the metre fares to Rs 30 from Rs 25 for the first two kilometres and the base price per kilometre to Rs 15 from Rs 13.

On Camera, Woman Trying To Cross Telangana River Slips, Gets Swept Away

The incessant rain in Telangana has claimed one life. A woman was swept away while crossing a flooded area in Bhadradri Kothagudem. She is still missing, sources said. A video from the spot showed a group of women trying to cross the raging waters when the woman, dressed in green, was dragged away by the strong current. An alarm was raised and a few men raced downriver to rescue her.

The met office had issued a red alert for Telangana from July 25-27 and predicted heavy rainfall in the state. But now, the met office said the rains will continue for two more days. Nizamabad has received record 46 cm of rain in around eight hours and it is still raining.

The water level of Godavari is at 47.3 feet at 8 pm today, and is likely to rise further. The river is flowing at 48.1 feet at Bhadrachalam, which is the second warning level)

At least 42 tourists are said to have got stranded trapped in a deep forest area in Telangana's Mulugu district where they had gone to see the Muthyaladhara, the highest waterfalls in the state.

Rescue teams including the district administration and police are trying to bring them to safety.

Minister Satyavati Rathod has instructed officials to spare no effort at the earliest. The National Disaster Response Force is also being called in to help with in the rescue.

The state government had declared holidays for all educational institutions on Wednesday and Thursday.

Gyanvapi Mosque Management Moves High Court Against Survey, Hearing Begins

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday heard a plea against a district court order directing the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct a survey to determine if the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi was built upon a temple.

After hearing arguments in the matter, Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker posted it for further hearing on Wednesday.

The high court also fixed August 28 for delivery of judgement on another petition challenging maintainability of a civil suit before a Varanasi court seeking the restoration of a temple at the site where the Gyanvapi mosque is currently situated. The judgement was reserved by Justice Prakash Padia on the petition filed by UP Sunni Central Waqf Board and others.

On Tuesday, Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, which manages the mosque, moved the high court, a day after the Supreme Court halted the ASI survey till 5 pm Wednesday, allowing time for the mosque management committee to appeal against the lower court's order.

The counsel for the committee, senior advocate SFA Naqvi, requested an early hearing of the case before Chief Justice Diwaker stating that there is an urgency as the Supreme Court's Monday order will expire on Wednesday.

On this, the Chief Justice said that if parties have no objection, then he himself can hear this matter. As the counsels for the parties agreed to the same, the court started hearing the matter.

Presenting his argument, Mr Naqvi requested the court to set aside the July 21 order of the Varanasi district court on the grounds that the district court had acted in urgency and directed the ASI to conduct the survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises and submit its report by August 4. Thereby, not giving sufficient time to the petitioner to challenge its order before appropriate forum as per law, he said.

Mr Naqvi said that the district court on July 21 passed the impugned order of ASI survey even without impleading ASI as a party to the suit.

He further said that the survey order was passed at a very preliminary stage as the parties were not asked to produce their evidence.

Mr Naqvi also argued that during the survey if any excavation is done, it will harm/damage the property in dispute (mosque).

Vishnu Shankar Jain, the counsel for the respondent (Hindu side), submitted that in the Ram Mandir case, a survey was conducted by the ASI and the same was accepted by the high court as well as the Supreme Court. Thus the order passed by the court below was just and proper, he said.

The mosque is located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and the Hindu litigants in the district court had sought the survey to determine whether a temple existed at the same spot earlier.

The Varanasi district court on Friday ordered the ASI to conduct a survey using technologies like ground penetrating radar and excavations, if necessary.

The Supreme Court's Monday order to pause the survey came while the ASI team was inside the mosque complex.

Amit Shah Writes To Opposition MPs Over Parliament Logjam

Seeking to break the current logjam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday sought "invaluable cooperation" of the opposition to discuss the Manipur issue in Parliament and asked them to rise above party lines to find a "permanent" solution to the embroglio in a "harmonious" way.

In identical letters in Hindi to opposition leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Shah said the people of Manipur want that MPs of all political parties give them confidence that the lawmakers are united and committed to the peace of Manipur.

Kharge is the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Chowdhury is the Congress leader in Lok Sabha.

Shah said the government is ready to discuss the Manipur issue and urged all to cooperate, rising above party lines.

He said Manipur was experiencing a new era of peace and development during the last six years of the BJP rule but some court orders and some incidents resulted in violence in Manipur during May.

The home minister said some "shameful incidents" also came to the fore after which people of the country, the Northeast and especially Manipur are expecting from Parliament that, rising above party lines, the leaders will stand with the people of the state.

"Earlier also our great Parliament has done it. The opposition is demanding that the government gives a statement but I want to tell you that the government is ready not only for a statement but also for a full-fledged debate.

"But the cooperation of all political parties is expected. I urge all the opposition parties to come forward for discussion in a cordial atmosphere.

"Come, let's rise above party lines to find a just and permanent solution for the challenges before the country in a harmonious way," he wrote.

Shah said as representatives of the people, it is the collective duty of all MPs that they serve the interests of citizens and work towards the betterment of the country.

"As you know Manipur is a very important border state of the country. The rich cultural heritage of the state is the jewel of the country's culture.

"Lok Sabha has a special place in the democratic structure of the country. Our country is the mother of democracy and the world's largest democracy, Parliament represents the hopes, aspirations, problems and worries of the 140 crore population of the country," he said, adding, "I hope that all the parties will cooperate in resolving this important issue".

Replying to a short debate on the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, the minister said the government has nothing to hide and is ready to discuss the Manipur issue.

"People who are shouting slogans are neither interested in cooperation nor in cooperatives, neither in Dalits nor in women welfare," he said amid sloganeering by opposition members.

"I want to reiterate that I have written letters to leaders of opposition in both Houses that we (government) are prepared for a discussion for as long as they want. The government is not afraid of anything. Those who want to debate the Manipur issue can debate. We have nothing to hide," Shah said.

"People of the country are watching you, you have to go for elections, beware of the anger of the people. I request you to create a conducive atmosphere to discuss a sensitive issue like Manipur," he added.

Defence Minister and Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Rajnath Singh too had stated that the government was ready for a discussion on the issue.

This is for the second time that Shah has told the lower House about the government's willingness to hold the discussion.

The government has said that Home Minister Shah would reply to the debate.

Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament remain disrupted ever since the Monsoon session began on July 20 with the opposition parties demanding a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur violence before a discussion.

The opposition has tried to corner the government on the Manipur violence after a video of a May 4 incident appeared on social media recently showing two women stripped and paraded naked by a mob.

The Manipur Police has arrested several accused seen in the video. The police said a case of abduction, gang rape and murder has been registered at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district.

More than 160 people have lost their lives and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3.

"Taken To Hilly Area...": Manipur Woman Narrates Gang-Rape Horror

As violence unfolded in Manipur's capital Imphal in early May, several people tried to escape from troubled localities. A 19-year-old tribal woman alleged as she was planning her escape and went to an ATM, she was kidnapped by a group of men. She narrated her trauma to NDTV. Women have been at the receiving end of the Manipur ethnic conflict.

The woman alleged she was taken to a hilly area, where three men took turns to rape her. She said she was hit with the butt of a gun and was not given food and water. The men handed her over to a valley-based insurgent group on May 15, she told NDTV.

"I was taken away in a white Bolero by four men. And while they were taking me away, three of them sexually assaulted me, except for the driver. I was then taken to a hill where they tortured and assaulted me," she said.

"Whatever miserable things that they could do to me, they did and the whole night I was not given anything to eat. They didn't give even water. In the morning, somehow, on the pretext of going to the washroom, I asked them to untie me. One of them was kind enough to do that and that's when I removed the blindfold and tried to look at what was around and what was happening. After that I took the decision to run down the hill and escape," she said.

An autorickshaw driver gave her a ride to safety as she hid under a pile of vegetables. The woman eventually managed to reach Kangpokpi, where she was referred to a hospital in Kohima, the capital of neighbouring Nagaland, according to her complaint filed with Kangpokpi police station. She said she managed to file the police complaint only on July 21.

Over two months since the incident, a police case has been filed of gang-rape, criminal intimidation and kidnapping with intention of murder with Porompat police station in Imphal too.

Sources said they have recorded a statement of the officer in charge of the police station she visited briefly and checked the CCTV footage in nearby areas. The police said no arrests have been made and no accused have been identified. They said they have not found any evidence yet.

Police said the investigation is going on. But the lack of evidence to corroborate her allegations is hampering the investigation. And it's this lack of evidence that the police are claiming that puts a question mark on whether women like her would get justice.

Opinion: Opinion: Uttam Kumar, The True Star

Uttam Kumar blazed like a meteor and vanished like one.

Bengal's classiest filmstar was shrouded in mysteries. I never met him but heard countless stories about the person and his acting prowess. And his temperament.

A new book has hit the stands. It is on bars and the Kolkata Maidan, the huge green cover that is home to some iconic football clubs, the Eden Gardens cricket stadium, and the majestic Victoria Memorial.

It talks about various places in Maidan where top writers, filmmakers, and thinkers would go to drink, some even carrying small bottles of whisky in their pockets. The author, Rahul Purakayastha, refers to Bimal Deb's poem, Uttamkumarer morning walk which translates into Uttam Kumar's morning walk, and writes that the actor saw Calcutta policemen shooting three people at point-blank range in the maidan. Those killed - it was nothing but an act that later came to be known as encounter killing - were Naxalites. Among those shot dead was seasoned Naxalite leader Saroj Dutta.

Uttam Kumar, probably threatened by the Calcutta Police brass, quietly left Calcutta and shifted to Mumbai. Apparently, Uttam had narrated the incident to some of his confidants who, in turn, alerted the cops. Once the dust settled down, he returned to Calcutta and started shooting for a host of films he had signed.

Yet, you will not find a single person in Kolkata who will say the star was a coward and did not raise the issue of the early morning killings in Maidan with the state government.

Uttam Kumar was the darling of the masses in Bengal, who had christened him Mahanayak - superstar. No male actor in Bengal could reach the status Uttam Kumar had reached in a span of three decades. He acted in over 200 films.

He was a man of varying moods. He once got up from the dining table and started walking in the main road because his second wife, Supriya Chowdhury, did not prepare a particular dish the star had requested. Crowds started gathering in hundreds, then thousands, seeing their top star walking in the streets all by himself. A distraught Supriya started following her husband, she forgot to wear her shoes. Soon, the tar-laced hot streets of Calcutta were making things difficult for her. Supriya, reportedly, was weeping profusely and asking her husband to pardon her for the lapse.

Eventually, cops from the Park Street police station rushed to the scene and senior officers told Uttam Kumar that he needs to get into the police jeep, or else there could be a major stampede. It is rumoured that Uttam Kumar did not speak to his wife for over a week after this incident.

There are countless stories revolving around this handsome star. I heard from some senior actors in Kolkata how Uttam Kumar would not get a bypass surgery done to control his heart ailments. He told his friends how can a doctor cut up the chest of a star, and take a look at his heart. Won't the star look horrible after the operation, asked Uttam Kumar. The doctors felt silent.

I have been researching for a book on Uttam Kumar and have been told some interesting stories about the actor. One revolved around his failed attempt to make a mark in Bollywood with Choti Si Mulaqat featuring Vaijayantimala Bali. The movie was released in a few theatres in Bombay and elsewhere in India. There were rumours that the all-powerful Kapoor family messed up the show, ostensibly because Uttam Kumar had refused a role Raj Kapoor had offered him in Sangam. The role, eventually, went to Rajendra Kumar but Raj Kapoor remembered the rejection. This was the second rejection, Uttam Kumar had rejected an earlier offer to act in the lead role of Jagte Raho. Uttam Kumar could never make any mark in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Now it's strange how Uttam Kumar failed in Mumbai where stars like Shashi Kapoor, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan were big fans of Uttam Kumar's style of acting. I read somewhere Uttam Kumar was also included in the cast of Ajnabi which was directed by Shakti Samanta. But when the movie eventually hit the theatres, Uttam Kumar was not among the stars.

The Bombay misadventure messed up Uttam Kumar. The actor faced huge financial losses and had to sell off some of his properties to clear the dues. And it was then he suffered his first heart attack. What was worse, those who messed up his life in Bombay were none other than his Bengali friends from Calcutta. A month after, Uttam Kumar, during a shoot, told his cameramen friends to shoot him behind a large, artificial spider web. After the shoot was over and the prints hit the newspapers, Uttam Kumar told Supriya that this was his life's story. "Everyone wants to put a web around me," he told Supriya. He was also upset because Soumitra Chatterjee, his junior and a rival, often told people that the top Bengali actress should have been paired with him and not with Uttam Kumar. But directors thought otherwise.

I had met with Supriya a year before she died. She sat down and narrated some wonderful stories about her life and times with the legendary superstar. Those were the black-and-white trailblazer days of Bengali cinema, there was no WhatsApp, no Insta, yet his movies did brilliantly well.

Supriya laughed when she said how difficult it was for her to keep Uttam Kumar away from women who would crowd his shooting studios. "What was funny was that everyone wanted to marry him almost instantly."

Supriya was under severe medication while she spoke to us. Every five minutes she would take a break, drink some water, and say she normally doesn't give interviews without cash. She was doing it only because it was all about Uttam Kumar. I didn't know how much I should have paid her. I realised I had not carried the customary sweets during my visit.

But the veteran actress poured her heart out. She narrated some 25 small stories that I plan to carry in my book before each chapter. One revolved around Uttam Kumar's worshipping of Lakshmi, the Indian goddess of wealth, with loads of fanfare at his home. He - claimed Supriya - had a vision of the goddess on his terrace. And then, the superstar was encouraged to see a white owl that visited his home every evening for a week before the puja. The white owl is considered auspicious in India because it is the carrier of the goddess.

Another, interestingly, was how Uttam Kumar never wanted her to wear a nightgown in bed. He insisted she wear a saree, not necessarily a new one, before hitting the bed. I thought it a little bizarre; how can you handle a saree in bed? But then, that's what stars are made of. Their style, whims, and fancies are totally different from the rest.

Uttam Kumar, said Supriya, was indeed handsome. His title role in Satyajit Ray'sNayak, which translates to The Star, was one of his finest. I was told Elizabeth Taylor was impressed seeing him on screen and wanted to meet him. It never happened. Worse, in Calcutta, Soumitra Chatterjee - a favourite of Ray - asked his friends how Ray could pick Uttam Kumar and not him for the movie. He probably did not have the courage to ask Ray.

The legendary director has himself recounted the premiere of Nayak and how Uttam looked super smart in a new suit and Supriya looked ravishing in a beautiful saree. Expectedly, the crowds went berserk after the movie, and Ray lost control. The fans tore off a portion of the star's suit and the cops had to rescue him and take him to Oberoi Grand. Ray said in one of his interviews that he finally realised why Uttam was considered the biggest star of Bengal, the first one to get a national award after it was instituted.

It is a pity he died so young; he was in his early fifties. Liquor and an erratic lifestyle had messed up his life, he was no longer handsome. Uttam Kumar realised his time was almost up, he suffered a severe heart attack on the sets of Ogo Bodhu Sundori.

Two incidents that happened just before he died will stay with me forever. One, his favourite makeup room was offered to a top Bollywood star, and Uttam Kumar was made to wait. He didn't like it at all and said if there is a door to enter life, there is a door to exit. And that he knew the exit. The second one revolved around Punu Sen, who worked very closely with Ray. Uttam Kumar had asked Sen if Ray had some roles for him and that he didn't like the roles offered to him.

Two days after his conversation with Sen, Uttam Kumar breathed his last amidst some serious rumours that a lifesaving drug was not offered to him when he was hovering between life and death.

Why? No one has the answer.

Only Supriya told me before winding up the interview: "Remember one thing, someone who is stretched between multiple women can never live a peaceful life. He will always be tormented."

Supriya should know, she was a big slice in the life and times of Bengal's biggest movie star.

Shantanu Guha Ray's book, Uttam Kumar: The Star, will hit the stands in March 2024. It will have 25 exclusive stories about the star, narrated by Supriya Chowdhury.

Deadly Mix Of Fake News, Rumours Fuelled Manipur Clashes: Officials

The ethnic violence in Manipur that erupted on May 3 and has left over 160 dead has been largely fuelled by rumours and fake news, according to officials from various security agencies who have been monitoring the situation in the restive northeastern state.

The despicable May 4 incident in Kangpokpi district, where two women were paraded naked and assaulted by several people, was among the spate of sexual attacks that occurred after a picture of a body wrapped in polythene was circulated in the Imphal valley with a false claim that the victim had been murdered by tribals in Churachandpur.

The picture was later found to be that of a woman murdered in the national capital but the fire had engulfed the valley by that time, and what was witnessed the next day put humanity to shame, says an official while referring to the video of the Kangpokpi incident that appeared on social media last week and has sparked massive outrage in the country.

On the same day, barely 30 km away, two more women in their 20s were brutally raped and murdered.

The lawlessness because of the fake picture spread like jungle fire and was one of the reasons for the state government to shut down the Internet on May 3, the officials said.

A section of parties and activists have opposed the suspension of the Internet. Refusing to interfere, the Supreme Court on July 17 asked the Manipur government to raise its grievance before the high court against the HC's earlier order on a limited restoration of the Internet in the state.

Analysis by various security agencies engaged in dousing the fire in Manipur, which has been on the boil since May 3, has led to the conclusion that there is "no control on fake or one-sided news being circulated even by local newspapers".

Citing a recent example, they said one of the prominent dailies had claimed that tribal men, armed with weapons, had planned to attack the members of the majority community at Kwatha village of Chandel district.

Alarmed by the news report, Manipur police swung into action, only to find that the news report was false.

The police issued a statement saying that there was no attempt to burn any village as reported in some local dailies and again appealed that only verified information in sensitive cases should be published.

Police have dedicated 'Rumour Free Number' 9233522822 for verifying any information emerging either through social media or word of mouth and checking the spread of disinformation.

Another video showing tribal youths marching in Churachandpur a few days back was circulated in the valley with subtitles claiming that the tribals will snatch women and children from the majority community.

However, since the video was in Mizo language, which is the most widely spoken of the Kuki-Chin areas, some anti-social elements took advantage and put subtitles to raise tempers in the Imphal valley, where Manipuri Meiteilon is generally spoken.

What was actually spoken in the video was a demand for a separate administration which ended with a tribal hymn, the officials said.

Another fake news being peddled and circulated in the Imphal valley was that some tribals had torched a religious place - Kongba Maru Laiphamlen.

Security agencies took some of the members of the majority community and showed them that no damage had been done to the religious place. However, armed clashes were reported between the ethnic groups in which two tribals were injured. Things subsided after the news was denied.

Another video was circulated which showed some dead people lying on the ground and termed as members of the majority community mowed down by the tribals. This video was also circulated after the shocking 26-second clip of the assault on two tribal women appeared on social media.

The fact, officials said, was that the dead were members of the majority community who had attempted to burn a tribal village in the hills and were killed in retaliatory action.

In the early phase of violence, a video showing a young woman being brutally assaulted and finally shot to death was circulated with a claim that she was a tribal woman who was tortured by the majority community.

It was immediately clarified that the video was that of a woman killed in Tamu town of Myanmar last year and had no links with the ethnic clashes in Manipur.

Earlier this month, a vehicle, which was a part of Manipur Police's Inspector General (CID), was set afire after a fake rumour that some tribals were being escorted out of the Imphal valley. However, police took strong action and arrested people in this connection, The majority community held a protest in the national capital where they had shown a woman from their community being targeted by the tribals. However, the picture was that of an Arunachal Pradesh woman who had been abused domestically, the officials said.

Officials feel that with the rumour mills working overtime, it will take a long time before the Internet could be fully restored in the state.

"The semblance of sanity has to arrive first. As of now, we are very far from that," a senior official said.

"Chief Minister Would Have Been In Jail If...": Sacked Rajasthan Congress MLA

Former minister and Congress MLA Rajendra Gudha on Sunday said he had saved Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot from trouble but was removed without being given an opportunity to explain himself.

"If Rajendra Gudha was not there, the chief minister would have been in jail," he claimed at a programme in Jhunjhunu district.

Speaking to media persons, he claimed that he had secured a "red diary" on the directions of the chief minister during a raid by the ED and Income Tax Department against Congress leader Dharmendra Rathore.

"The chief minister called and asked me to retrieve the 'red diary' at any cost," he claimed, without going into details of the diary's contents.

He claimed the chief minister had repeatedly asked him if he had burnt the diary and added the CM would not have done so if there was nothing incriminating in it.

The BJP latched on to his statement to target the ruling Congress in the state.

"Rajendra Guddha makes sensational disclosure about a Red Diary that contains the alleged black deeds of Congress- Gehlot Govt.

"Will those who know the truth about the black deeds of corruption and women atrocities now answer about this?" BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla tweeted.

Gudha, who held charge as Minister of State for Sainik Kalyan (Independent Charge), Home Guard and Civil Defence, Panchayati Raj and Rural Development, has been targeting Gehlot following his sacking on Friday evening, hours after he cornered his government in the Assembly over the issue of crimes against women in the state.

Addressing the programme in Jhunjhunu on Sunday, Gudha said he would have resigned had the chief minister asked him to do so.

"If you had asked me to resign, I would have resigned...you should have called and given a notice," he said.

He said that judges also give a chance before taking action.

Gudha, who is among six MLAs who won the 2018 assembly election on a BSP ticket before defecting to the Congress in September 2019, was inducted as a minister in November 2021.

They had supported Gehlot in July 2020 during his tussle with his then-deputy Sachin Pilot. However, in the last few months, Gudha has made statements in favour of Pilot.

Anti-Terror Agency Charges 3 Terrorists Linked To Khalistani Groups

The NIA has filed a chargesheet against three "individual terrorists" associated with banned Khalistani outfits BKI and KTF, exposing their international nodes involved in the recruitment and handling of India-based terror operatives, an official said on Sunday.

Six other associates working for the Babbar Khalsa International and Khalistan Tiger Force were also named in the chargesheet filed before a special court on Sunday, also highlighting a complex mechanism of fund raising for the two outfits, a spokesperson of the agency said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said it is also investigating the links of 16 other absconding and arrested accused associated with the BKI and KTF.

The spokesperson said the three notorious gangsters-turned-terrorists and drug-smugglers -- Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias 'Rinda', Lakhbir Singh Sandhu alias 'Landa' of BKI and Arshdeep Singh alias 'Arsh Dala' of KTF -- are based outside the country and have created their own networks of operatives there to carry out terror activities in India.

"Through this complex network of operatives based abroad, they have been recruiting, motivating and handling their associates in India to carry out terrorist activities, extortion and cross-border smuggling of weapons and drugs into India.

"They also have linkages with major gangs operating in north India, including local gangsters, organized criminal syndicates and networks," the spokesperson said.

According to the NIA, Rinda is a very important BKI member and Khalistani operative. "In the year 2018-19, he fled to Pakistan illegally and is currently living there under the patronage of ISI, and is involved in the commission of terrorist activities against India.

"Rinda is involved in various offences like smuggling of arms, ammunition explosives and drugs into Indian territory from Pakistan, recruitment of BKI operatives, murders, raising funds for BKI through extortion in the states of Punjab and Maharashtra," the spokesperson said.

The official said Rinda has been involved in many terrorist activities, including the RPG attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence headquarters in May 2022, and was declared an "individual terrorist" along with Dala and Landa by the centre, the agency said.

Moga resident Dala is an infamous gangster who left for Canada sometime back and came in contact with Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was the chief of proscribed terrorist organization KTF, according to the spokesperson.

The duo engaged in the recruitment of youth and formation of terrorist gangs for carrying out extortion for raising funds for KTF and for carrying out targeted killing of businessmen and leaders of particular communities in Punjab, the spokesperson said.

The official said Landa of Tarn Taran was initially involved in criminal and gangster activities and left for Canada in 2017 where he came in contact with Rinda.

Landa started working for the BKI and emerged as the main accused in a number of terrorist incidents, including the RPG attack on Punjab Police Intelligence headquarters and RPG attack on Sarhali Police station in Tarn Taran in December, 2022.

He was also the mastermind of the conspiracy to kill Punjab Police Sub Inspector Dilbagh Singh in August last year, the spokesperson said.

The agency said other foreign-based chargesheeted operatives of BKI include Harjot Singh who is currently in the USA, Kashmir Singh Galwaddi, who is absconding in the Nabha Jailbreak case and suspected to be presently in Nepal, and Landa's broyher Tarsem Singh, currently in Dubai.

Gurjant Singh, who is hiding in Australia, is amongst the foreign-based nodes of KTF who has been chargesheeted, the spokesperson said, adding other accused chargesheeted are Deepak Ranga and Lucky Khokhar alias 'Denis', who were recruited by foreign-based handlers for carrying out terror activities in India.

US Sisters Sue Funeral Home For Burying Stranger In Their Father's Grave

Two sisters in the US have filed a $60 million lawsuit against a pair of funeral homes after the wrong man was allegedly buried in their father's grave, New York Post reported. As per the lawsuit, Stacy Holzman and Megan Zaner have accused Fletcher Funeral and Cremation Service in Fountain Inn, S.C., of mistaking another person's remains for their father and placing the wrong body in his burial clothes.

Notably, Clifford Zaner died of heart failure at his South Carolina home on February 25, at the age of 72. He told his family that he wanted to be buried in black jeans and his favorite Led Zeppelin T-shirt.

After he died, his body was supposed to be shipped to New York. However, the wrong man was sent and then buried in their father's favourite clothes. The sisters noticed something was wrong when they asked to see their father one last time.

“I knew something was wrong the day of the funeral. There were red flags when we viewed the body, huge red flags. The first thing I noticed when they opened the casket was no mustache… The first thing I saw was just a bare upper lip, and I couldn't stop focusing on that,'' Stacy Holzman the Daily Beast.

He also had stitches across his forehead, indicating that an autopsy had been performed, while Mr. Zaner hadn't undergone any such procedure.

The Star of David Memorial Chapel funeral home insisted that the body belonged to Ms. Holzman's father and assured them that they received the correct body from Fletcher Funeral Service, according to the lawsuit.

“We deeply regret any sorrow experienced by the family for the mistake made by the funeral home in South Carolina,” the funeral home said. It also stated that “families are under a great deal of stress when they identify their deceased."

However, after three weeks, the funeral home informed Mr. Zaner's family that there had indeed been a mix-up. A second funeral with the correct remains was then held in Jacksonville, on March 24, but without his favourite T-shirt.

The sisters, meanwhile claim to have not received a refund for the first funeral with the Star of David that involved the wrong remains.

The family is hoping a $60 million lawsuit will send a message.

"I want them to take responsibility for this horrible mistake. And I do want things put in place in the future, which I think should have been there, from happening to anybody else,'' Megan Zaner said.

Delhi On Alert As Haryana Releases Barrage Water Into Yamuna: Minister

The Delhi government is on high alert due to the discharge of over two lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana into the Yamuna, Revenue Minister Atishi said.

Some parts of Yamuna Khadar (floodplains) might get inundated if the river's water level crosses 206.7 metres. However, the government is prepared for evacuations, the minister said.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) data, the flow rate at the Yamunanagar-located Hathnikund Barrage crossed the 1 lakh mark at 9 am and oscillated between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh cusecs between 10 am and 4 pm.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till July 25.

Atishi said a regular 'munadi' (announcement) is being done in vulnerable areas to inform residents about the threat of flooding. Relief camps have been inspected and preparations made for people to stay there.

The Delhi government is on high alert due to the discharge of more than 2 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage into the Yamuna River, the minister said.

"The situation has sparked concern, prompting the government to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents," she added.

Atishi said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been closely monitoring the developments and overseeing the response efforts.

The Department of Revenue has undertaken extensive measures to tackle the situation effectively, she said.

"Whether it's the central district, eastern district, or areas like the Yamuna Bazar and Yamuna Khadar, we have made sufficient preparations to address any challenges that may arise," she said.

The Delhi government appeals to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the authorities during this critical time. Updates and advisories will be regularly provided to keep the residents informed about the evolving situation, the minister said.

Parts of Delhi have been grappling with waterlogging and flooding for more than a week now. Initially, a downpour caused intense waterlogging on July 8 and 9, with the city receiving 125 per cent of its monthly rainfall quota in just two days.

Subsequently, heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the Yamuna, including in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana, led to the river swelling to a record 208.66 metres on July 13.

Woman "Kidnapped" By Family From Husband's Home, Rescued By Delhi, UP Cops

The Delhi Commission for Women, along with Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh Police, rescued a 22-year-old woman who was allegedly abducted by her family from her husband's in Delhi, the women's body said on Saturday.

In June, Firdaus Khan, one of the commission's members, received a complaint from an Amroha-based woman who said she had married a man in May this year of her own accord against her family's wish, the DCW said in a statement.

She told the DCW member that since she feared for her life, she had run away from Amroha and come to Delhi with her husband.

The commission helped the woman file a complaint with the Delhi Police. However, she refused to take any legal action against her family members at that time, the statement said.

On Friday, the commission received a call from her husband who said some men from her family had come to their house, and beat her up and forced her to go with them.

After the incident, a case was registered at Harsh Vihar Police Station and a team of Delhi Police was dispatched to Uttar Pradesh to go to the woman's house, the statement said.

Afraid that police were involved, the woman's parents allegedly left her at Gajraula Police Station in Uttar Pradesh at night.

Police collected the woman from the station and brought her to Delhi for a medico legal exam. The commission is counselling the girl and providing her legal aid, read the statement.

"We received a call regarding the abduction of the woman by her own family. Our team acted swiftly and with the help of Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh Police, the woman was rescued within a few hours and brought to Delhi," DCW chief Swati Maliwal said in the statement.

"We will provide all possible support to the girl. Further action should be taken against the family members so that they don't dare to harm the girl in the future," Ms Maliwal added.

One More Detained Over Horrific Manipur Video: Cops

Manipur Police has arrested a sixth person in connection with the May 4 parading of two women naked in Kangpokpi district of the state, officials said on Saturday.

Police said the arrested person is a juvenile.

Police had made the first arrest on Thursday, a day after a 26-second video of the horrific incident surfaced on July 19. Three more arrests were made later that day.

The fifth accused, 19-year-old youth, was arrested on Saturday.

One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-army man, who served as a subedar in the Assam Regiment and had even fought in the Kargil War.

More than 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.

Video: Short Circuit Causes Huge Fire At UP Police Station, 4 Cops Injured

A building inside the premises of a police station in Meerut was engulfed in a fierce fire this evening. Four constables have sustained severe burns in the fire at the crime inspection building inside the police station in Meerut's Sardhana.

A cloud of thick black smoke billowed skyward and was visible from several kilometers away, the locals said. More than half a dozen fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

According to the initial investigation, the fire originated from a short circuit in a switchboard inside the police station. It rapidly spread to the balcony, which houses a canteen. The fire's intensity was such that it led to the explosion of gas cylinders in the canteen. The inferno quickly engulfed the surroundings, including a warehouse nearby.

"The flames have been doused. However, some of our officers suffered severe burns to their hands and faces while trying to put out the fire. They have been rushed to the hospital for medical attention, and those with less severe injuries are also receiving treatment," Senior Superintendent of Police, Rohit Singh Sajwan, said.

"Historic Decision": Top Education Official On CBSE's Indian Languages Move

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools to consider using Indian languages as optional medium of instruction to make multilingual education a reality.

Schools affiliated to the CBSE has now an option of teaching in regional languages from pre-primary to Class 12. Till now, CBSE schools could teach only either in English or Hindi, unlike state board schools that can teach in English, Hindi or a state language.

The CBSE's announcement is in line with the government's push for the National Education Policy (NEP).

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had recently come up with a similar circular for higher education.

"This is a historic decision and will open a world of opportunities for many children, besides Indianising teaching and learning systems in the country," Chamu Krishna Shastry, head of the high-powered Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti for the promotion of Indian languages under the Education Ministry, told NDTV today.

"With the UGC too making professional education available in regional languages and now CBSE doing the same for school education, this is a historic move for progress in implementing the NEP," Mr Shastry said.

The NEP aims to address the growing developmental needs of India, and proposes the revision and revamping of all aspects of education, including its regulation and governance, to create a new system that is aligned with the aspirational goals of the country.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a tweet congratulated CBSE. "This is a laudatory step towards encouraging education in mother tongue and Indian languages in schools," he said.

In the circular, the CBSE noted the challenges posed by the implementation of multilingual education and use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction, which include availability of skilled teachers capable of teaching multilingual subjects, the creation of high-quality multilingual textbooks and time limitation, especially in two-shift government schools.

Djokovic's Father Hits Back At Journalist Over "Loser Of All Time" Post

Novak Djokovic's father has hit back at a journalist who labelled the 23-time Grand Slam champion as the 'loser of all times' following the defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the final of Wimbledon last week. In the final, Djokovic was chasing unprecedented mark of a 24th Grand Slam in Open Era, but the top speed Spaniard Alcaraz came from a set down to outlcass the second seed in five sets. The defeat to Alcaraz was Djokovic's 12 in a Grand Slam final, the most among any player in men's singles tennis.

After the final, a Montenegrin journalist used the stat to take a swipe at Djokovic.

"Loser Of All Time". What did you do to him, Carlitos? So many illegal crazy volleys, slices and bombs that should be banned. And to inflame so much anger among lumberjacks who don't even know how to count games, but know enough to curse a 20-year-old boy who amazed the world? How many shepherds will stop watching tennis and cry in anguish on my wall? The Spaniard has given Novak a new nickname. LOAT, as many as 12 lost finals, the most in the Open Era, he is the 'loser of all times'," Nebojsa Sofranac, a Montenegrin journalist posted on Facebook.

Sofranac comment, however, didn't go down well with Djokovic's father, who slammed the journalist for the same.

"May God help that man. If he can even be helped, and if he really means everything he wrote," Srdjan Djokovic, Novak's father, told Serbian outlet Republika in an interview.

Notably, Djokovic overtook Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl as the player with most defeats in Grand Slam finals.

UK Woman Wanted To Put Down Her Dog Because It "Barked At People"

An animal rescue centre, Lucie's Animal Rescue in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, said that a woman wanted to put her two-year-old dog to sleep because it barked. Lucie Holmes, who runs the centre was earlier contacted by the woman, she asked if she would take her dog Markus, but she had to turn her away because the centre was full.

Ms Holmes received a call from a local vet two hours later and was informed that the owner had wanted to euthanise Markus citing its barking. The vet refused the request to euthanise the dog.

Ms Holmes in an interview with BBC said, "It's disgusting. I have not been able to sleep much because I am still so angry. Dogs bark. It's what they do."

"I told the owner there was absolutely no need for Markus to be euthanised. He needs time and training," she said.

Ms Holmes and her husband Sean took Markus in despite already sharing her home with nine other dogs and 34 kittens, which are also looking for a home.

Ms Holmes in a lengthy post on Facebook shared about the incident. She wrote, "His owner contacted me to ask me to rehome him, because... 'He barks at other dogs and people when out so needs rehoming 'Marcus is a 2-year-old patterdale x Labrador. He had been owned by said owner for... 5 weeks. He's just settling in, learning his new environment and family, and at only 2 years old he will be rather overwhelmed as well as adjusting to everything new. Barking is how dogs communicate, and express their fears, and also excitement. When I asked his owner what training she had been doing with Marcus to help him overcome his possible nervous behaviour, the answer was 'he's had none'. I explained I am full at the moment but I will let her know when I had room to fit him in."

She added, "2.5 hours later I receive a call from a vet practice. Marcus had been taken to the vet to be EUTHANISED. Put to sleep. To end his life, because his owner could not be bothered to put any time or training into him. Thankfully, the vets refused and called us. They spoke to their behaviourist while they were there, and offered the owner sessions to help Marcus- the owner declined. Killing him was the easy way to end her problem. So, of course, with fear the owner would then just go to another vet and put him to sleep- I made room. I don't have room, but I'm not having it. Marcus has been with us for less than half an hour. He has sat, and taken a treat very gently. Has met 6 dogs- enjoyed a sniff and his tail hasn't stopped wagging. He hasn't barked yet."

In her post, she also urged people to think carefully before getting a dog, "Too many people are getting pets without any consideration to the time they need to adjust, and expecting them to be 'perfect companions' without actually putting anything into them. Take some responsibility and invest time into them, you chose them to be part of your family. Stop destroying them just because you cannot be bothered to help them. It's not their fault. You are safe Marcus, and loved. You will never be treated so badly again, and that I can promise."
