North Korea Fires 4th Ballistic Missile Within 24 Hours: Report

North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the sea to the east of the Korean Peninsula in the early hours of Sunday, Yonhap news agency reported citing the South Korean military.

The move comes not even 24 hours after North Korea launched three ballistic missiles on Saturday.

The short-range ballistic missile was fired around 2:50 a.m. local time from Pyongyang, Yonhap said, citing South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The launch follows an unprecedented number of missile tests conducted by North Korea this year, as Pyongyang presses on with weapons development amid speculation it could test a nuclear weapon for a seventh time.

Search Operation Underway In Jammu's Rajouri, Weeks After Civilian Killings

Security forces on Saturday launched a search operation in parts of Jammu and Kashmir's border town of Rajouri, where two civilians were killed in a firing incident outside an Army camp early this month, officials said.

The search was being conducted by joint teams of the Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Phalyana and adjoining localities, including the Tourism Reception Center and fish pond, they said.

The officials said sniffer dogs were also pressed into service during the operation, which was still continuing when last reports were received.

Two local people of Phalyana village were killed and one person was injured in the firing outside the Army camp on December 16.

While the Army blamed unidentified terrorists for the firing, the locals staged a massive protest against the force and demanded an inquiry.

Powered By Modified Charkha, Women Spin Success Stories In Kashmir

A delicate pashmina yarn holds promise for hundreds of women in Kashmir valley. Powered by a modified charkha, over 200 women spinners have ended the year 2022 with doubling their output and income.

The modification in the age-old charkha has changed the life of Shaesta Bilal. Since the income is based on output of spinning, the foot pedal charkha has come to her aid.

In Srinagar's downtown area, women like Shaesta are spinning the finest yarn in the world and modified charkha has given them confidence and self-reliance.

"This (modified charka) has given us the means to make a living so that we are self-reliant. Thank God we are earning more and we are not dependent on anybody. Now I'm not financially dependent on my husband," said Shaesta Bilal.

Ms Shaesta was given a new charkha and training by a pashmina shawl trader in Srinagar a year ago. Since then she has graduated to a resource person for other women.

Over the last one year, more than 200 women have been trained and given modified charkhas. The initiative is part of an effort to protect and preserve the genuine age-old craft of pashmina shawls, which is facing a massive invasion of fake and machine-made shawls.

The government has also started GI (geographical indicator) tagging of Kashmiri shawls to preserve its unique character and value in the market.

Over the years, the number of women spinning pashmina has come down drastically in Kashmir valley, mainly due to low wages and less output on the traditional charkha.

According to Mujtaba Qadri, who owns the training centre for women spinners and equip them with the new charkha, the modifications in the tool were made by Shere-e-Kashmir Agricultural University a few years ago.

"I started training with a few women initially. Once we saw the results that we were able to double the produce, which in turns doubles the income of women, I decided to run this programme," said Mujaba, who runs a family shawl business.

Besides providing modified charkha for free, Mujtaba also give a-15 day training course to women spinners. "From our centre, over 200 women have been trained in the last one year and we have provided them modified charkha as well," he said.

At the centre, Nusrat Begum says life has become a bit easier for her after she was trained to use the new charkha. From squatting on the floor to sitting on a chair, her spinning production has doubled.

"It has helped me a great deal. I used to spin three gram of yarn on the old charkha. Now I can spin six grams," said Ms Begum.

For centuries, the secret behind Kashmir's elegant pashmina shawls is fine spinning by women. It further goes to master artisans for weaving. For making some shawls with intricate work, it takes months and even a year to weave.

While the new charkha helps women spin more and earn more, the wages are still less. For a knot, which is 10 threads of yarn, they are being paid Re 1.5. They want more.

"The charkha is very useful to us. We are thankful to Qadri sahib as he gave us this charkha for free and we are doing very well on it. We work at home and also train others. We requested him if could increase our wages," said Yasmeena.

Zomato CEO Decides To Deliver Orders Himself On New Year's Eve

The evening of December 31 is always the busiest for all places with recreational activities, whether they are hotels, restaurants, or any place in the hospitality industry. The number of online food orders also increases at this time.

Since there is so much demand for food delivery services on New Year's Eve, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal declared he would take a brief break from his office duties to make a few deliveries by himself.

"I'm going to deliver a couple of orders on my own right now. Should be back in an hour or so," Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal tweeted this evening.

After a few minutes, he posts another tweet: "My first delivery brought me back to the Zomato office. Lolwut!"

Along with the post, he tweeted an image of himself in the signature red Zomato uniform with a couple of food boxes in hand.

This is not the first time the Zomato CEO has stepped out to deliver food orders.

In October, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder and executive vice chairman of Naukri.com, revealed in a Twitter post that during one of his recent interactions with Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, he learned that the entrepreneur delivers orders wearing the company's trademark red t-shirt at least once a quarter.

"Just met @deepigoyal and the @zomato team. Delighted to learn that all senior managers including Deepinder, don a red Zomato tee, get onto a motorcycle, and spend a day delivering orders themselves at least once a quarter. Deepinder tells me that thus far nobody has recognised him," Mr Bikhchandani tweeted.

British Tourist Jailed For Sniffing Cocaine From Pablo Escobar's Grave

A British tourist who "sniffed cocaine from the grave of Pablo Escobar as part of a bet" four years ago and pledged never to return to Colombia has been imprisoned alongside members of his drug-smuggling gang, according to The Metro.

The news outlet reported that Steven Semmens, 39, was jailed at Swansea Crown Court for 13 and a half years on Thursday alongside Andrew Botto, 34, Shane White, 34, and Ieuan Emlyn Williams, 37, who all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine between April 2020 and August 2021. They have been sentenced to a total of more than 52 years between them. The gang was led by Shane White, who wanted to sell drugs on the streets of South Wales.

The group was detained as part of Operation Wizard, according to South Wales Police, after it was discovered that they were involved in smuggling and importing numerous kilogrammes of class A and B drugs into the UK.

According to a report by indy100, during a trip to Colombia in 2018, Steven Semmens video taped his shocking actions of snorting cocaine off Pablo Escobar's grave on Facebook Live. The 39-year-old said he carried out the tasteless stunt as a bet among friends but did not expect things to go as far as they did.

The video went viral and scared Semmens shaved his head in an attempt to hide his identity. However, his efforts were short-lived when authorities found him and kicked him out of the South American country.

No New Entry, Hotel Booking In Mussoorie And Nainital On New Year Eve

New Year's Eve revellers and tourists who want to spend the evening in the beautiful cities of Mussoorie and Nainital will have to change their plans if they don't have prior bookings in hotels because the administration has decided to prohibit entry on December 30 and 31 for people without prior bookings to curtail the traffic chaos.

In a release issued by the administration, officials said that this decision has been taken to stop the overcrowding situation and properly manage the traffic at these tourist destinations.

This decision was taken in a review meeting regarding the traffic arrangements in view of the New Year celebrations chaired by the Director General of Police of Uttarakhand, Ashok Kumar.

Police officers of Dehradun, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, and Nainital districts participated in the meeting through video conferencing.

"Police have made adequate parking facilities available in the two tourist destinations in preparation for New Year's celebrations," said the state police chief.

The Uttarakhand DGP also issued a video message to tourists, urging them to cooperate with police and avoid causing a nuisance.

His tweet in Hindi, when translated to English, reads as "Enjoy New Year's Eve without chaos. My message to all the tourists and local residents coming to Uttarakhand".

Nine parking spots have been designated around the town, according to a press statement from Akshay Konde's office, the superintendent of police (traffic).

In one of Mussoorie's busiest and most happening areas, the Mall Road, Police Department has decided on a plan in advance to tackle the traffic.

Tim Cook Conveyed Apple App Store Curb Concerns To Japan PM: Report

Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook asked Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to consider protecting users when regulating distribution of smartphone apps, Nikkei reported on Friday citing sources.

Apple has faced heightened scrutiny over its App Store practices that charge a 30% fee on payments and subscriptions and does not allow iPhones to use apps from third party app stores.

Cook asked Kishida to make sure that regulations around distribution of apps do not undermine user privacy and security, the report added.

Apple and the Japanese PM's office did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Earlier this month, Apple said it had invested more than $100 billion in its Japanese supply network over the last five years, as Cook visited the country.

Revenue from Apple's services business, which includes the App Store, has been growing at a rapid pace in the last few years and now hovers at about $19 billion per quarter.

The boy, a native of nearby Mayyanadu, is undergoing treatment at the district hospital, family members said.

The incident happened when the child was playing in front of the house and his grandmother had just stepped inside the house after giving him food, they said.

Delhi To Start The New Year With Fresh Cold Wave

Delhi's minimum temperature rose to double digits for the first time in 15 days on Friday, but the respite is predicted to end soon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said icy winds from the Himalayas will bring the minimum temperature down by three to five degrees Celsius in the plains of northwest India.

"Dense fog is likely to continue over the region during the next 4-5 days. A fresh cold wave spell is likely to commence over northwest India from January 1," it said in a statement.

The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius, four notches above the normal. It was also the highest minimum temperature this month.

The maximum temperature settled at 22.8 degrees Celsius, a departure of 2 degrees Celsius from normal.

The relief from cold in north India can be attributed to a western disturbance, a weather system characterised by warm moist winds from the Middle East.

With the western disturbance retreating by Saturday, cold wave and cold day conditions are predicted to wallop parts of Delhi in early January, meteorologists said.

The mercury will drop to eight degrees Celsius on Saturday and further to four degrees Celsius by Monday (January 2). Dense fog and cold wave conditions are predicted in parts of Delhi from January 1 to 5, according to the IMD.

A cold day is when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 degrees Celsius below normal and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal. A severe cold day is when the maximum is 6.5 degrees Celsius or more below the normal.

According to the IMD, 'very dense' fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 metres is 'dense', 201 and 500 metres 'moderate', and 501 and 1,000 metres 'shallow'.

In the plains, the meteorological office declares a cold wave if the minimum temperature dips to four degrees Celsius or when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or below and is 4.5 notches below the normal.

A severe cold wave is when the minimum temperature dips to two degrees Celsius or the departure from the normal is more than 6.4 degrees Celsius.

Uzbekistan Blames India-Made Syrup For Deaths, Centre Responds: 10 Facts

  1. The health ministry of Uzbekistan, in a statement, said that the children who died had consumed cough syrup Doc-1 Max - manufactured by Noida-based Marion Biotech. Laboratory tests found "the presence of ethylene glycol", a toxic substance. Doc-1 Max syrups have been withdrawn from all pharmacies,  Uzbekistan said.
  2. The Uzbek authorities have started legal action against some people, "including the local representative of the company there… we are extending necessary consular assistance to those individuals," said foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. Uzbekistan, he said, has not formally contacted the Indian government about the deaths.
  3. The syrup was apparently given to children at home without a doctor's prescription, on the advice of pharmacists, with doses that exceeded the standard dose for children. It was found that the children, before being hospitalised, took this syrup at home for 2-7 days, in doses of 2.5 to 5 ml three to four times a day, the ministry said. The deaths apparently took place over a period of two months.
  4. A joint inquiry is being conducted by the teams of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO - north zone) and Uttar Pradesh Drugs Controlling and Licensing Authority. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said further action would be taken on basis of the inspection.
  5. Sources also said manufacturing company Marion Biotech has been asked to submit an undertaking that the cough syrup was not supplied in any part of India. Samples of other drugs it manufactures will be picked up for random testing.
  6. Marion Biotech said samples of the cough syrup have been collected from its manufacturing unit and that they are now waiting for the test report. "Our drugs are not at fault, we are waiting for the testing to be completed," said Hasan Harris, Legal Representative of Marion Biotech.
  7. Earlier this year, deaths of 70 children in Gambia were linked to cough syrups manufactured by Haryana-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals, following which, its unit was shut by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation for violation of manufacturing standards.
  8. After the World Health Organisation (WHO) had issued a statement over the deaths in Gambia, Drugs Controller General, VG Somani, earlier this month had said that tests on samples of Maiden's products at government laboratories had "been found to be complying with specifications" and no toxic substance was detected in them.
  9. "The onus in such a case lies with the importing country and the manufacturing company. When drugs are produced for exports, the standards of the country it is being exported to are followed," Rajesh Agarwal, the former director of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority told NDTV.
  10. The issue has spiralled into a political controversy. "Modi Sarkar must stop boasting about India being a pharmacy to the world & take strictest action," Congress's Jairam Ramesh tweeted. "The death of children in Gambia had nothing to do with the consumption of cough syrup made in India. That has been clarified by the Gambian authorities and DCGI, both," shot back the BJP's Amit Malviya.

"India's Roads Will Be Better Than Those In US": Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said roads in India would be better than those in the United States of America by the end of 2024 under the Narendra Modi government.

He was speaking after inaugurating the first phase of a bridge on Zuari river, which is expected to improve connectivity between the North and South districts of Goa.

Asserting that road infrastructure was being created at a rapid pace in the country now, he said, "We have decided that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before the end of the year 2024, India's road infrastructure will be better than that of America."

The commissioning of the Manohar International Airport in Mopa earlier this month will pave the way for Goa to become the number one state in the country, he added.

Mr Gadkari also said his plans to start a water taxi system in Goa failed due to non-cooperation of the state's Captain of Ports office.

"The strength of Goa is in its ports and the plan was to connect ports with the airport by water taxi. Such a project would have saved Goa from pollution. The state, like water and air pollution, must also take care to curb sound pollution," he said.

Elaborating on his plans to reduce sound pollution, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said he was contemplating the possibility of replacing the "blaring" sound of vehicle horns with soothing music.

Speaking about the new Zuari bridge, Mr Gadkari said it would have a revolving restaurant and viewers gallery on a tower.

"The state government had issued tenders for the project twice but could not get any response from bidders. I will help the state government on how to go ahead with this project," Mr Gadkari said.

Among those who were present for the bridge inauguration were Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister Shripad Naik.

Mr Gadkari also inaugurated the approach roads to the bridge from Bambolim to Verna villages.

As per the state government, this will be India's widest cable-stayed bridge when completed.

The bridge is part of a Rs 2,530 crore project covering a distance of 13.2 kilometres between Bambolim and Verna villages.

Constructor Dilip Buildcon Limited has said the entire the entire eight-lane project will be completed by April, 2023.

Mumbai Belongs To Maharashtra, "Not To Anyone's Father": Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said today that Mumbai belongs to the state and "not to anyone's father", strongly condemning the "make Mumbai a Union Territory" remark by Karnataka minister J Madhu Swamy. Maharashtra, he said, will write to Karnataka and Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the issue. Union minister Shah will be requested to reprimand such "motormouths," he added.

Amid the raging boundary dispute, Mr Madhu Swamy had made a strong attack on Maharashtra in the legislative assembly.

"It is being said that they (Maharashtra leaders) have taken a decision and said that Belagavi should be declared a Union Territory, I want to tell those people that there are two or three such cities in the country which can be made Union Territories... Mumbai is the top of them. It was like a Union Territory during Mumbai or Bombay presidency... if those people want the good of the country, then show a big heart and announce that Bombay will be made a Union Territory," he had said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basvaraj Bommai said, "we will not give even an inch of our land".

Speaking in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today, Mr Fadnavis said the state's feelings will be conveyed to the Karnataka government and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

"Mumbai belongs to Maharashtra and not to anyone's father," Mr Fadnavis was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India. "We will not tolerate anyone staking claim over Mumbai and we will put forth our feelings before the Karnataka government and Union home minister," he said, reported PTI.

Leader of the Opposition Ajit Pawar had flagged the issue, naming the Karnataka minister. "(Bharatiya Janata Party MLA) Laxman Savadi said Mumbai belongs to Karnataka and has rubbed salt on the Marathi people's wounds," he had said.

At a meeting between the chief ministers of the two states with Amit Shah earlier this month, it was decided that no fresh claim would be made by either party while the matter was pending in the Supreme Court, he said.

"The comments by Karnataka MLAs or the Karnataka Congress president are contrary to what was decided. We will not tolerate any claim staked on Mumbai. We condemn this," Mr Fadnavis said.

The Karnataka leaders' reaction came after both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature had unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday to "legally pursue" the inclusion of "every inch" of the land of Belgaum, Karwar Bidar, Nipani, Bhalki cities and the 865 Marathi-speaking villages in Karnataka into the western state.

Mr Shinde, who had moved the resolution, also condemned the remarks by Karnataka leaders.

China's Covid Pivot Sparks Fears Worldwide

Beijing's sudden pivot away from containing Covid-19 has caused jitters around the world, with the United States saying it may restrict travel from China following its decision to end mandatory quarantine for overseas arrivals.

China late Monday scrapped quarantine for inbound travellers from January 8 onwards, dismantling the last remaining piece of its stringent zero-Covid policy and ending some of the world's harshest border restrictions.

The move was greeted with jubilation by Chinese citizens, who rushed to book international flights, triggering a surge in ticket prices.

Hospitals and crematoriums across China continue to be overwhelmed by an influx of mostly elderly people.

AFP reporters saw dozens of mostly elderly Covid patients lying on gurneys in overflowing hospital emergency wards in Tianjin, 140 kilometres (87 miles) southwest of the capital Beijing Wednesday.

Medical staff are "pretty much all" expected to continue working despite testing positive for the virus, one doctor said.

Other countries have expressed concerns about the potential for new variants to emerge as China battles the world's biggest surge in infections.

- International concern -

US officials said late Tuesday they were considering Covid entry restrictions on travellers from China, after countries including Japan and India introduced PCR testing on arrival for Chinese passengers.

"There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing Covid-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data, being reported from the PRC," the US officials said, referring to the People's Republic of China.

The United States is "considering taking similar steps" to countries such as Japan and Malaysia, they added.

Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China claims as its own, said Wednesday that it would also screen travellers from the mainland for the virus.

Italy said on Wednesday it was making PCR tests mandatory for visitors from China.

China's loosening of measures effectively brought the curtain down on a zero-Covid regime of mass testing, lockdowns and long quarantines that has stalled its economy and triggered large-scale nationwide protests.

"Currently the development of China's epidemic situation is overall predictable and under control," foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Wednesday.

"Hyping, smearing and political manipulation with ulterior motives can't stand the test of facts," Wang added, calling Western media reporting on China's Covid surge "completely biased".

All passengers arriving in China have had to undergo mandatory centralised quarantine since March 2020. The period of isolation fell from three weeks to one week in June, and to five days last month.

The end of that rule in January will also see Covid-19 downgraded to a Class B infectious disease, allowing authorities to adopt looser controls.

Chinese immigration authorities said Tuesday they would resume issuing passports for tourism purposes from January 8, after years of strict exit controls.

- Tracking cases -

The winter surge comes ahead of major public holidays next month in which hundreds of millions of people are expected to travel to their hometowns to reunite with relatives.

Chinese authorities have said the scale of the outbreak is now "impossible" to track and narrowed the criteria for defining Covid deaths.

China's Center for Disease Prevention and Control reported 5,231 new Covid cases and three deaths nationwide Wednesday -- likely a drastic undercount since people are no longer required to declare infections to authorities.

Authorities are using data from online surveys, hospital visits, demand for fever medicines and emergency calls to "make up for shortcomings in (officially) reported figures", disease control official Yin Wenwu said at a press briefing Tuesday.

With the country facing shortages of basic medicines, Beijing city authorities plan to distribute the oral Covid drug Paxlovid at local hospitals and community clinics. It remains extremely difficult to obtain for ordinary people.

The US-developed treatment was briefly available on e-commerce platform JD.com and delivery platform Meituan in the past few days before both ran out of stock.

Watch: Railways Ministry Shares A Glimpse Of Revamped Train Coaches Adorned With Art

The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday shared a video showing a new set of revamped train coaches. The 'coach facelift' initiative has been undertaken by the Sealdah Division of the Eastern Railway in order to revamp the otherwise-dull train coaches and make them more vibrant. The video shows a coach of a local train operating in West Bengal, facelifted with colourful art and bright LED lights. The walls of the coach can be seen adorned with murals and paintings, portraying India's diverse culture.

Sharing the video, Indian Railways wrote, ''Uplifting your Travel Experience! A coach facelift initiative has been undertaken by the Sealdah Division of @EasternRailway, where coaches are being adorned with art. Catch a glimpse of a train that runs on the Sealdah-Bangaon section.''

Watch the video here:

Many users flocked to the comment section to appreciate the unique initiative and praised Indian Railways. One user wrote, ''Great initiative to showcase and save the rich Indian and especially regional culture in the form of art.I think trains on all local routes could be decorated like this and in other similar designs !!!'' Another said, ''Great initiative by team.''

However, not everyone was impressed with the art. Many found it unappealing and said that the Railways should focus more on improving its service and pay heed to problems faced by commuters.

A third user reacted to the video and wrote, ''Gaudy Awful Claustrophobic... Graffiti Artists do better JobsDo some Good Maintenance n Improve Services n Coach Quality instead.''

A fourth commented, ''Please!! Employ good and professional artists for this. Else leave it as is. This is not a facelift. Its a spoiler!!'' A fifth added, ''Painting uplifts the travel experience? A waste of money in my books.''
