Republic Day 2024: Difference Between Unfurling And Hoisting National Flag

As India prepares to celebrate Republic Day, this year holds special significance, marking 75 years since the adoption of the Constitution. Republic Day in India is celebrated with grand parades, colourful state tableaus, and diverse cultural displays. But did you know that on this day, the Indian flag is unfurled, not hoisted? While the terms 'flag hoisting' and 'flag unfurling' are commonly interchanged, they represent different techniques in presenting the national flag.

Let's look at the subtle yet significant differences in how the flag is presented on Republic Day and Independence Day in India.

What is the difference between unfurling and hoisting the flag?

The crucial distinction lies in the placement of the flag during these ceremonies. The process of unfurling involves unveiling a folded or rolled-up flag attached to a rope while hoisting is the act of raising a flag up a pole using a halyard.

Why is the Indian flag unfurled on Republic Day but hoisted on Independence Day?

On Republic Day, the flag is unfurled by the President of India, and it remains closed and tied at the top of the flagpole. The flag is unfolded by the President without pulling it up. Republic Day marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. The flag is unfurled as a symbolic gesture to renew the commitment to the principles laid down in the Constitution, highlighting the shift from colonial rule to a sovereign, democratic republic.

This is different from Independence Day, where the Prime Minister hoists the flag from the bottom of the pole. Flag hoisting during Independence Day often includes a ceremonial event with a military or civilian honour guard raising the flag while the national anthem is played. The hoisting on Independence Day symbolises the rise of a new nation, patriotism, and freedom from colonial rule.

Both ceremonies, although differing in execution, hold immense significance in commemorating India's journey toward freedom and its evolution as a sovereign nation.

California Homeless People Found Living In Deep Caves Stocked With Drugs

In a clear example of California's homelessness crisis, authorities found caves along the Tuolumne River where people had been living. These 20-foot-deep underground dwellings, reached by makeshift stairs, were filled with makeshift furniture and personal belongings, revealing the desperate measures some take for shelter. Located near Modesto, the caves were cleared over the weekend by police and volunteers from local homeless outreach organizations. Authorities expressed concern about safety risks from unstable structures and potential flooding from the nearby river.

"This particular area has been plagued by vagrancy and illegal camps, which have raised concerns due to the fact that these camps were actually caves dug into the riverbanks," the Modesto Police Department said in a statement.

"During the operation on Saturday, a total of 7,600 lbs of trash, as well as two truckloads and a trailer of garbage, were successfully removed from the area," the police department said.

While details about the number of people and the length of their stay are still emerging, the discovery highlights the dire need for affordable housing and support services for the state's growing homeless population.

The Modesto Police Department confirmed they are working with Pathways to Hope and other agencies to connect the former cave dwellers with resources and find them safer accommodations. However, officials acknowledge this is just one instance of a widespread problem.

California currently faces a severe housing shortage, with skyrocketing rental costs pushing more people onto the streets.

According to CNN, California has spent a stunning $17.5 billion trying to combat homelessness over just four years. But, in the same time frame, from 2018 to 2022, the state's homeless population actually grew. Half of all Americans living outside on the streets, federal data shows, live in California.

Trump Re-Election Would Mean Unpredictability For Canada: Justin Trudeau

A win for Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election this November would mean a certain amount of unpredictability for Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday.

Trudeau, whose center-left Liberals came to power in November 2015, had rocky relations with Trump during his first four-year White House term. In 2018, Trump accused Trudeau of being weak and dishonest.

"We don't know exactly what he'll do ... obviously, Mr. Trump represents a certain amount of unpredictability," Trudeau told reporters during a cabinet retreat in Montreal.

Canada sends 75% of its goods and services exports to the United States and is particularly vulnerable to any U.S. shift toward protectionism.

Trudeau said his Liberal government had managed to meet the challenges posed by the first Trump administration. These included the U.S. placing tariffs on Canadian steel and Washington's demand for the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which also includes Mexico.

During the NAFTA renegotiation, Canada sent dozens of cabinet ministers and top officials to a number of key U.S. states to stress the value of continental free trade and Trudeau said Ottawa would take the same approach this time.

"We were able to manage Mr. Trump by defending Canadian interests and showing we can create economic growth on both sides of the border," said Trudeau.

Kirsten Hillman, Canada's ambassador to Washington, is due to address cabinet ministers on Tuesday.

About two-thirds of Canadians surveyed this month said U.S. democracy cannot survive another four years of Trump in power, according to a poll released last week.

Arambai Tenggol, an organisation of around 50,000 people engaged in guarding villages in the valley areas of the state, has asked all ministers and MLAs from the valley districts to come for discussions, the details of which have not been specified, an official said, adding "there are intel reports that they (Arambai Tenggol) are planning to enter Kangla fort with arms before the meeting."

According to the officials, a large number of security forces including CRPF, Assam Rifles, Army and state police have been deployed near the fort as a precautionary measure.

Kangla Fort served as the royal seat of Manipur kingdom till 1891.

Earlier too, Arambai Tenggol had asked all legislators to attend a meeting at Kangla Fort, the official said.

Tamil Nadu To Start IPL-Like Matches To Revolutionise Jallikattu Festival

Tamil Nadu is set to revolutionise the Jallikattu festival, the traditional bull-taming sport, by introducing cricket's famous Indian Premier League (IPL) like matches at a new state-of-the-art stadium in Madurai's Alanganallur, which is renowned for this traditional sporting event.

The stadium will be inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin tomorrow. The initiative to have IPL-like league matches aims to give a "boost" to the traditional festival and put it on India's tourism map.

The new Jallikattu stadium, is spread across 66.8 acres, and has seating capacity of 5,000 and a dedicated museum showcasing the Jallikattu bulls and the significance of the sport.

The new stadium will have emergency response measures such as a hospital for bull tamers and veterinary center for bulls.

The ancient sport of valour has an infamous history of injuring, maiming and even killing hundreds of people including spectators besides acts of cruelty against the animal like intoxication, pulling them by their tail and squeezing lime juice into their eyes.

Meanwhile, the existing Jallikattu venues will continue to host events and the new breed of league matches will be conducted here by the Madurai District Administration and the State Sports department, which is presently under Udhayanidhi Stalin.

The festival has been commercialized with corporate funding for prizes including gold coins, motor bikes and cars. With new plans, this ancient sport could become a contemporary money spinner.

Last week, the Tamil Nadu police filed a case against a YouTuber after he posted a video showing his Jallikattu bull being force fed a rooster. The disturbing video, from Chinnappampatti in Salem district, shows the bull being forced to chew the rooster.

Three men are seen holding the bull to keep it in check while another man first feeds raw meat and then shoves the chicken in the bull's mouth, shows the 2.48 minute video posted on YouTuber Ragu's social media accounts.

Animal rights activists have expressed concerns that the new grand form of this sport will only increase cruelty against bulls, amplifying their trauma.

Trump's Sexual Assault Defamation Trial Delayed Over Juror's Covid Symptoms

Donald Trump's sexual assault defamation trial was delayed after a juror reported Covid symptoms Monday, the eve of the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary vote.

The juror in the civil case, at which Donald Trump says he will testify, reported symptoms of fever, as did one of Donald Trump's lawyers who had a separate exposure, the federal court in New York heard.

"We sent him home... We will not take testimony today, we will take the day off," said Judge Lewis Kaplan of juror number three.

Following the announcement of the delay, which will be reviewed Tuesday to determine if the case in its final stages can proceed, Donald Trump was whisked away in a metallic black Chevrolet SUV.

E. Jean Carroll, a successful writer, is seeking more than $10 million in damages for defamation by Donald Trump, whom another New York civil jury found liable for sexual assault against her.

Donald Trump separately faces four serious criminal cases, including his alleged attempt to overthrow the results of the 2020 election in which he lost to Biden.

He has shuttled between New York to attend the defamation case and a separate civil fraud trial and New Hampshire campaign stops.

The primary is seen as the last, best chance for Haley to stop Donald Trump, who despite being twice impeached as president and now facing four criminal cases, has succeeded in imposing his far-right brand on the entire Republican party.

A new Washington Post/Monmouth poll Monday showed Donald Trump, 77, backed by 52 percent in New Hampshire to Haley's 34 percent.

"We Are Going To Respond": White House On US Military Base Attack In Iraq

The United States is taking the attack by Iran-backed operatives on a base hosting US forces in Iraq over the weekend "extremely seriously," the White House said Sunday.

"Multiple ballistic missiles and rockets" were fired by Iranian-backed operatives at Al-Assad Airbase in western Iraq late Saturday, the US military said, leading to one Iraqi and possible American casualties.

"It was a very serious attack, using a capability of ballistic missiles that posed a genuine threat," White House Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said Sunday.

"We are going to respond... to establish deterrence in these situations, and to hold these groups accountable that continue to attack us," Finer added during his appearance on ABC's This Week.

"You can be assured that we are taking this extremely seriously."

Most of the projectiles fired at the base were intercepted by air defense systems, Finer and the Pentagon said.

Since mid-October, there have been dozens of attacks on the approximately 2,500 US troops in Iraq and the around 900 in Syria, deployed there with other coalition forces to fight jihadists of the Islamic State group.

Most incidents, including Saturday's attack, have been claimed by "Islamic Resistance in Iraq," a loose alliance of Iran-linked armed groups that oppose US support for Israel in the Gaza conflict.

The use of ballistic missiles marks an escalation in the attacks, which had previously been carried out with lower-tech rockets and drones.

Saturday's air base attack comes amid soaring tensions in the Middle East following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.

"The airline should've checked before departure and since that email, there has been no call or any contact from SpiceJet. At least they should've checked up on him after he went through this traumatising experience," Vinod Davusi said.

The SpiceJet crew asked the passenger not to panic and slid a note across from under the locked bathroom door, requesting the passenger to stay calm.

"Sir, we tried our best to open the door. However, we could not open it. Do not panic, we are landing in a few minutes. So please close the commode lid sit on it and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, the engineer will come. Do not panic," said the note, which has gone viral on social media.

The passenger was eventually rescued after the plane landed in Bengaluru and an engineer unlocked the door. By then, he had been confined for more than an hour. The flier, SpiceJet said in a statement, was provided medical attention soon after rescue.

"On 16 January, a passenger, unfortunately, got stuck inside the lavatory for about an hour on SpiceJet flight operating from Mumbai to Bengaluru, while the aircraft was airborne due to a malfunction in the door lock," a statement from the airlines said.
"Throughout the journey, our crew provided assistance and guidance to the passenger. Upon arrival, an engineer opened the lavatory door, and the passenger received immediate medical support," it added.
The entrapment of the passenger on the SpiceJet flight comes at a time when airline service providers are making headlines for the wrong reasons. Winter conditions in north India have delayed hundreds of flights over the past few days, with passengers complaining of poor communication and inadequate assistance from airline carriers.

In an unfortunate incident, a passenger attacked a pilot onboard an IndiGo flight while he was explaining the reasons for the delay. Air India was in the news for a 17-hour delay that saw passengers eating their meals on the runway as they waited for their journey to begin.

Home Ministry Forms Tribunals To Reconsider Ban On 2 Kashmir Organisations

The Union Home Ministry has formed tribunals under the stringent anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act or UAPA, to decide whether the ban on two Kashmir-based organisations, Muslim League and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, was justified.

Justice Sachin Dutta of the High Court of Delhi will preside over the two tribunals.

The ministry had banned the Muslim League -- led by Masarat Alam Bhat -- and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, founded by deceased separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, under UAPA on December 27 and December 31, 2023.

"The tribunal will issue showcause notices to the organisations concerned and will be asked to present their side," a senior official said.

The proceedings would involve the recording of statements of investigating officers and experts, evidence against the activities of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Muslim League by the home ministry as well as recording of the arguments by the organisations.

Last week, the home ministry had issued two notifications to empower states and Union Territories to act against teh Muslim League and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. The notifications empower the Jammu and Kashmir administration to seize assets and freeze bank accounts and finances belonging to the two groups.

The Tehreek-e-Hurriyat was declared banned as it has been fomenting terrorism and spreading anti-India propaganda in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said.

"The 'Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, J&K (TeH) has been declared an 'Unlawful Association' under UAPA. The outfit is involved in forbidden activities to separate J&K from India and establish Islamic rule. The group is found spreading anti-India propaganda and continuing terror activities to fuel secessionism in J&K. Under PM @narendramodi Ji's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, any individual or organization found involved in anti-India activities will be thwarted forthwith," read his post on X, formerly Twitter.

The activities of the group and its leaders are prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty, security and communal harmony of the country, the ministry had said.

Citizens In This European Country Now Can't Adopt Children From Abroad

Danes will no longer be able to adopt children from abroad after the country's only adoption agency said Tuesday it was ceasing operations amid reports of irregularities.

The Danish International Adoption (DIA) agency said in a statement it was "initiating a controlled wind-up of its activities as a facilitator of international adoptions".

The announcement came after Denmark's social affairs ministry suspended adoptions from the six countries with which DIA currently cooperates due to irregularities involving employment regulations.

The six countries are the Czech Republic, India, the Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan and Thailand.

DIA, which halted adoptions from Madagascar last year amid concerns over possible fraud, said Tuesday it had no choice but to shut down.

"International adoption can no longer, under the current conditions in Denmark, be run by an NGO like ours," DIA said.

It said it was currently handling 36 adoption procedures, and provided no details about what would happen to those cases.

International adoptions have in recent years plunged more than ten-fold in Denmark since 2010, when 418 were registered.

Meanwhile in Norway, the Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs (Bufdir) in December put an end to all adoptions from the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand, after several cases of illegal adoptions emerged in the media.

And as of January, no new adoption procedures from South Korea are allowed.

Bufdir had recommended a two-year freeze on all international adoptions pending the outcome of an investigation, but the government ruled that out and asked Bufdir to submit an evaluation as soon as possible.

Madison Marsh, US Air Force Officer, Crowned Miss America 2024

On Sunday night in Orlando, Florida, Madison Marsh, a 22-year-old second lieutenant in the US Air Force and a master's student in the public policy program at the Harvard Kennedy School, emerged victorious at the 2024 Miss America pageant. Representing Colorado, Ms Marsh made history as the first-ever active-duty Air Force officer to hold the national title.

"You can achieve anything. The sky is not the limit and the only person that's stopping you is you," Ms Marsh said in an interview shared via Miss America's Instagram story.

She further said that if she could come from "a small town, not being part of the pageant," and step into the pageant world, then so could anybody else.

Ellie Breaux of Texas placed as the first runner-up.

Fifty-one contestants participated in the event, representing all 50 US states, as well as the District of Columbia, CNN reported.

The US Air Force also celebrated Ms Marsh's win with a post on X, formerly Twitter. "Congratulations to our very own #Airman, 2nd Lt. Madison Marsh, aka Miss Colorado - who was just crowned @MissAmerica 2024! Marsh is the first active-duty servicemember to ever win the title," the caption read.

See the post here:

Notably, Ms Marsh was crowned Miss Colorado in May 2023, just days before she graduated from the Air Force Academy with a degree in physics. She dutifully joined the branch as a second lieutenant, while also pursuing her master's degree in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and training for the Miss America pageant.

"It's an awesome experience to bring both sides of the favourite parts of my life together and hopefully make a difference for others to be able to realize that you don't have to limit yourself," Ms Marsh said, as per the outlet.

"In the military, it's an open space to lead in the way that you want to lead - in and out of uniform. I felt like pageants, and specifically winning Miss Colorado, was a way to truly exemplify that and to set the tone to help make other people feel more comfortable finding what means most to them," she added.

The 22-year-old said that her physical training for the military came in handy during her preparation for the beauty pageant. "For me, it's great because I need to stay physically fit and in the gym for the military, so it already coincides with pageant training," she said. '

"Hamas Are Abroad, Kill Them": Gazans To Israeli Army In Audio Recording

Palestinian civilians living in Gaza who have been in contact with the Israeli military are piling scorn on Hamas and encouraging the Israeli military to remove the terror group from power, in audio recordings released by the Israel Defence Forces on Sunday.

The Palestinians were talking to Arab-speaking officers of Unit 504, which specialises in human intelligence.

Through social media and leaflets dropped in the Strip, the IDF has encouraged Gazans to call the military if they have information about the whereabouts of the 136 hostages being held or top Hamas leaders.

Israel has already offered a USD 400,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

But now, Palestinians are calling simply to vent their anger at Hamas and encourage the Israelis to continue their offensive.

One Palestinian called the Hamas leaders "dogs" before vowing they would be cursed by Allah.

"Listen, listen to what the people around me are saying, may Allah protect us from you, Hamas," the Palestinian told the Israeli officer. "Allah will curse them, Allah will curse them and those that voted for them."

He went on to add that Hamas "destroyed us, pushed us 100 years into the past. May Allah bring disaster upon them. Our people are their hostages. Those dogs are taking advantage of their power over us."

Another Gazan told an Israeli officer, "Tell your leaders: Hamas people are abroad, outside of Palestine, screw them outside of Palestine, kill them."

He added, "I am telling you in the name of our nation. I am sitting alone, and I'm screwed. Everything's destroyed. They're all abroad, sitting around in hotels. Sitting around in hotel rooms."

At least 1,200 people were killed in Hamas' attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7.

The number of men, women, children, soldiers, and foreigners held captive in Gaza by Hamas is now believed to be 136. Other people remain unaccounted for as Israeli authorities continue to identify bodies and search for human remains.

Woman Claims She Caught Her Husband Cheating And It Saved Their Marriage

A woman from Orlando has claimed that she caught her husband cheating and it eventually saved their marriage. Charity Craig, 45, and her husband, Matt, 40, separated for 8 months in 2012 after she found text messages from another woman on her husband's phone.

Mrs Craig revealed that her husband, Matt, left the home to continue his relationship with the other woman. But they eventually decided to give their relationship another go after therapy, and now the couple are happily ever after, the New York Post reported.

"At the time, my husband's affair felt like the end of the world, but it turned out to be the best thing for us as we've come back so much stronger," Charity, a jewellery company founder, told SWNS.

The couple started dating in their teens and married in their early 20s. But by 2012, with four kids, their marriage had hit rock bottom.

Mrs Craig revealed that she had grown suspicious of her husband's behaviour by July 2012, after she noticed that he stayed late even after working as a music pastor.

"I was working over 60 hours a week in a high-stress position. I spent more time at work than with my family," explained Matt, who is now a chief marketing officer. "I was struggling between my family and my dreams of pursuing a musical career."

After a few days, Mrs Craig's fears were confirmed when she discovered text messages from another woman.

"I confronted him, and he broke down and told me everything," Charity shared.

Matt admitted to dating another woman for two months.

The couple soon decided to take the path of divorce.

"I thought I knew my husband better than anyone else, but he'd been living a double life and I had no idea," Charity lamented. "My whole world was turned upside down, and I didn't know how I'd ever recover."

While Matt moved on with another woman, Mrs Craig visited a counsellor.

After a few sessions, she learned that Matt's affair was not the only reason for their marital problems.

"I started therapy, and I realized that I was no longer the woman he'd married, and he wasn't solely to blame for the breakdown of our relationship," Charity recalled.

"I spent eight months working on myself - building up my self-confidence and learning how to deal with my problems healthily," she continued.

She shared that they got back together in February 2013 after undergoing couple counselling.

Not just that, Matt also gave Charity all the passwords to his social media and phone.
"Matt was incredibly sorry for the affair, but I was also sorry for my part in the breakdown of our marriage," Charity said. "We had to completely start again, but it was worth it."

Now, Charity works as a marriage counsellor to help other couples struggling after an affair.

"It's hard work, but so rewarding to help other couples move past betrayal and rebuild their marriage," the mom of four declared.

Soon, after the story of the couple went viral. In the comments section, many people expressed concern about their relationship.

"He's gonna do it again," a user wrote.

"Bro looks happy to have made it thru. Forgiveness. It can work wonders! If the lesson was learned," another user wrote.

"Wait until she finds out he's gay," the third user commented.

"Had Not Been Pregnant, Would Have Ended My Life": UK Post Office Scandal Victim

Wrongly convicted due to bugs in the UK Post Office's computer system, Seema Misra was sent to prison while two months pregnant.

Had she had not been expecting her second child, Misra told AFP that she would have ended her own life "for sure".

Misra, now aged 48, took over the post office in West Byfleet, a village southwest of London, in 2005.

Her very first day ended with her system registering an £80 ($102) deficit, a seemingly trivial problem that soon turned into a nightmare, she explained from her home in Woking.

At first, she tried to reassure herself that tallying up "is never penny to penny."

But deep down she thought: "Why wouldn't it be penny to penny? Money goes in money, goes out, it should be all balanced up."

The following week, her accounts showed a 163;200 deficit, which instantly doubled to 163;400 after she carried out instructions given to her by an adviser on a telephone helpline.

The deficits grew over time, but the Post Office turned a deaf ear, blaming Misra's accounting.

Following an audit, an investigation and prosecution for theft, Misra was found culpable for a black hole of nearly 163;75,000.

Misra pleaded guilty to falsifying accounts, having put her signature on inaccurate balance sheets, and pleaded not guilty to theft.

Childbirth with electronic tag

But all along the real culprit was "Horizon", the accounting software developed by Japanese IT giant Fujitsu.

Around 900 postal workers were convicted in total in what British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak this week called "one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our nation's history".

Until her court case, Misra said she was "confident that I will get justice, it will be all fine."

But on November 10, 2010 -- her eldest child's 10th birthday -- a judge sentenced her to 15 months in prison.

Misra fainted on hearing her punishment, coming around in hospital before being taken to jail.

"If I hadn't been pregnant I would have killed myself, that's for sure," she recalled.

At least four suicides have been recorded among those caught up in the scandal.

She served four months behind bars, and then spent four months having to wear an electronic bracelet, even while giving birth.

"I was thinking... the midwife would be thinking what kind of mother I'm going to be," she said, fearing that she might end up back in prison if she broke her curfew.

"All those kind of things were going on in my mind while I was giving birth."

She was forced to borrow from relatives for years, sell her business at a loss and a London flat she had bought to rent out was confiscated.

Her family suffered "mentally" and "financially" as Misra could no longer find work because of her conviction.

"We couldn't enjoy the family moments together, all the special days were ruined," she said.

The family's "dignity, our confidence" was another victim of the scandal, and "you can't put any price tag on that," she added.

Suffering of the innocent

Misra's conviction was finally overturned in 2021, along with those of around 40 of her colleagues.

Running a post office "could have been our adventure" and the start of a "business empire", but "all that shattered," said Misra, who arrived in the UK from India in 1994.

She thought about returning to India, but decided not as she still harboured the hope of a better life for her family.

Misra is still understandably "very angry" at the Post Office, which she said "could have stopped it a while ago", but instead "hid the evidence and made innocent people suffer."

She wants to see those responsible "behind bars" and have their property confiscated, with their bonuses used to compensate victims.

While welcoming this week's announcement of a new law to exonerate and compensate wrongly convicted postal workers, she stresses that the government must now make this promise a reality quickly.

But beyond that, "we need to set the right example to the world that we are developed country, that the system works here. We should feel safe."

CEO Asked Husband To Meet Child In Bengaluru, Then Checked Into Goa Hotel

After allegedly denying him a chance to meet his son for at least three weeks despite a court order, the CEO accused of murdering the four-year-old had asked him to pick up the child in a Bengaluru locality on January 7, a day after she had already checked into a serviced apartment in Goa.

The lawyer of Suchana Seth's husband, Venkat Raman, said the CEO sent an e-mail to Mr Raman on January 6 and said he could meet their child the next day. According to the police complaint lodged by the manager of a Goa serviced apartment, however, she had checked in with their four-year-old son on the very night this e-mail was sent. The room had been booked, and paid for, until January 10.

Mr Raman's lawyer said the husband was not aware that his wife and child were in Goa and he went to the designated meeting spot, waited for an hour, sent her a WhatsApp message and two e-mails asking if everything was okay, and then left when she did not turn up. The four-year-old's body was discovered in Seth's suitcase on January 8, when she had left Goa and was headed to Bengaluru.

Mr Raman recorded his statement before the Goa police on Saturday afternoon and said he had not been allowed to meet the child for the past five weeks, according to a report by news agency PTI.

'Seeking Retribution Futile'

Speaking to reporters in Hindi on Saturday, Mr Raman's lawyer, Azhar Meer, said seeking retribution after the child's death was futile, stating, "We do not expect any justice. The child is dead and why the mother did it is immaterial, in a sense."

Asked what the trigger for the murder could be, he said, "We can only guess. A mother doing this to her child is so unnatural that no answer can give anyone any closure. As for the trigger, we can guess that she probably did not want the son to meet the father and had, thus, filed cases. (In a custody dispute) every party thinks they have a right, but the child has an equal right to receive love from both the mother and the father."

Mr Meer said that the Bengaluru family court, where the custody case was being heard, had ruled progressively in Mr Raman's favour over the past year. He said Mr Raman was initially allowed to speak to the child on the phone or over video call, and then permitted to spend time with him within the court premises once in two weeks.

In November, the lawyer said, the husband was allowed to meet the child at home from morning to evening. "She was probably angry that the judge had been ruling in the father's favour, but why kill the child because of this anger?"

On Seth's claims that Mr Raman was harassing her, Mr Meer said that was a lie. "But even if we assume that it was true, what was the child's fault? The child wasn't harassing her. She could have taken out her anger at the husband, why take it out on the child... There is someone in custody in whose bag the child was found and then there's the husband who had to conduct his last rites. You can't imagine what he is going through."

'Refused To Comply'

The lawyer said the last court order, on November 20, permitted Mr Raman to meet his son once every week, from morning to evening. The meetings would take place on Sunday and the last one was on December 10.

"She didn't send the boy for three or four weeks. There were multiple requests, but she refused to comply. January 7, Sunday, is when the child was taken from this world and we had hoped that Mr Raman would be allowed to meet him that day," he said.

Asked whether Mr Raman knew that Seth and the child were in Goa, Mr Meer asserted, "No, he absolutely did not. On January 6, she had written an e-mail asking Mr Raman to pick up the child on  the morning of January 7 from Sadashiva Nagar in Bengaluru. He went there and waited from 10 am to 11 am, went back home and then left for some work in the evening.

"Before leaving the meeting spot, he sent her a WhatsApp message saying 'I am here' and also sent two e-mails saying he was waiting and that he hoped everything was okay," he added.

The lawyer said Suchana had requested that the pick-up and drop-off point for Mr Raman's meetings with his son be a public place. "In her words, it was a child-safe place or something like that, and she used to use a coffee shop," he said.

According to the police, Suchana Seth had tried to die by suicide after allegedly murdering her son. She was caught in Karnataka's Chitradurga on January 8 - when she was on her way to Bengaluru, with the child's body in a suitcase - after the staff at the service apartment alerted the police about bloodstains being found in her room.

"Nose Cover": All About The New Gen Z Trend Taking Over Internet

From millennial pout to the peace sign, there have been several poses that have hung around for decades. However, now the "nose cover" pose has left a lot of adults scratching their heads over what it might mean. Gen Z children everywhere seem to be hopping on this trend, including Tyson Fury's 14-year-old daughter Venezuela, who has been seen covering her face in a family picture posted on mum Paris Fury's Instagram along with Paris' niece Valentino.

In her Instagram story Boxer Tyson Fury's wife, Paris shared a photo as she celebrated her niece's 13th birthday. Ms Paris posted a family photo to mark the occasion but her niece Valentino, and her eldest daughter Venezuela hid their faces behind their hands with the "nose cover".

Now, according to the New York Post, parents have been left baffled by this latest trend with many asking if it's a secret sign or a "traveller thing". One parent, Michelle Harris, infuriated by the family photos at Christmas being ruined by her teenage son using the 'nose pose' even decided to confront him. "Is everything OK? Why won't you show up in family photos for the handsome boy that you are anymore?' Are you being bullied?" she asked her son, as per the outlet.

But her son's response was a "surprise", Ms Harris recalled. "'No, but I will be if you post pictures of me online without my consent!'" her son told her.

The outlet explained that teenagers nowadays are active online and often seek out embarrassing photos of each other on social media to "roast" them. Covering their faces, then, is a way to potentially evade teasing, the Post reported.

"As parents, we want to capture it all," Ms Harris said. "Their first step, every tooth, the braces, the spots and then we proudly post in our online social circles mindlessly without stopping to think how damaging this can be to our youngsters within their own online social groups," she continued.

Also Read | Pics: Once Asia's Most Eligible Bachelor, Brunei Prince Marries A Commoner

Separately, speaking to The Sun, parenting expert Amanda Jenner also attributed the budding trend to teenagers' acne-riddled awkward phase. "It's important to remember that this phase is a normal part of growing up, where seeking independence and establishing personal boundaries are key developmental milestones," she explained.

However, Ms Jenner also said that the online landscape can be "hard" for teens especially when unfiltered or unedited photos of them are plastered on a parent's Facebook feed. Therefore, the "nose cover" trend allows Gen Z to be in a photo to make their parents happy while still maintaining harmony. "It's very sad that we can't share and be proud of family photos, but unfortunately this is the way it is today," Ms Jenner said.

Now, going forward, Ms Harris said that she aims to be more mindful of the content she shares online and urges other parents to ask for consent before sharing a seemingly innocent photo.

US Woman Faked Daughter's Cancer For Years To Collect Donation Money

A 41-year-old US woman was arrested on Monday for running a donation scam by claiming her daughter had cancer. According to the New York Post, Pamela Reed from Ohio allegedly lied to her friends and family for years about the health of her 7-year-old daughter, whom she publicly portrayed on the internet as a blind and sickly child suffering from several diseases, including acute myeloid leukaemia and regular seizures. She even admitted to shaving her young child's head in order to sell the plot, cops said.

Community members generously "participated in fundraising efforts and had made monetary contributions to help the family offset medical costs," the Noble County Sheriff's Office said in a statement, as per the Post

The 41-year-old's scam was uncovered by the local child services. She was charged with theft by deception - a felony of the fourth degree, which can lead to a year and a half of prison time.

According to Newsweek, Reed enticed several local organisations to participate in her fake fundraising efforts. One organization had donated around $8,000 to the family, cops said.

Reed posted images online of her 7-year-old daughter receiving medical scans. She even shaved the child's head to give the appearance she was undergoing cancer treatment. The child reportedly missed over 280 hours of school in the 2023-2024 year due to medical examinations. Moreover, the mother had previously also claimed that her child had severed aplastic anaemia, a disease that prevents bone marrow from creating enough blood cells.

Reed's scheme came crashing down last week after an elementary school nurse discovered the little girl was not blind in her right eye as her mother had claimed. The nurse also confirmed that the 7-year-old did not have cancer or leukaemia, and she never had cancer or leukaemia.

Following her arrest, Reed "admitted during questioning that she had exaggerated and fabricated medical conditions to receive monetary donations from local organizations" and was transported to Noble County Jail, the sheriff's office said.

"Child abuse and neglect isn't always cut and dry, cookie cutter scenarios," Sheriff Jason Mackie, who led the investigation, and Misty Wells, the director of the Noble County Department of Job and Family Services, said in a joint statement. "If you as a professional or as a member of our community feel like something just isn't quite right, don't hesitate, make the report," they added.

According to officials, Reed's bond was set at $50,000. A preliminary hearing is set to take place on January 16.

NASDAQ Vice Chair Meets PM Modi, Discusses Financial Inclusion Reforms

Ed Knight, Global Board Chair of the US-India Business Council (USIBC) and Executive Vice Chairman of Nasdaq, led the trade association's executive delegation to the tenth instalment of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gandhinagar today.

As part of USIBC activities at the investment summit, Mr Knight met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss policy reforms to boost financial inclusion at an industry roundtable focused on growing India's FinTech ecosystem.

Overall, nine USIBC member companies participated in the roundtable.

Mr Knight discussed both USIBC's role in promoting bilateral trade and investment, including growing India's emerging global financial center Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT), and the role of Nasdaq in promoting financial technology in India.

The GIFT City project, launched in Gujarat in 2011, aims to become a major international financial hub, where Indian companies can access the global capital markets and investors.

Mr Knight also emphasized USIBC policy priorities that would advance these shared goals, including permitting the direct listing of Indian companies on US stock exchanges and easing the ability of Indians to invest in US capital markets.

Indian companies are currently not permitted to list their shares directly on overseas markets, but global investors and top Indian startups have been calling for this to change.

"As ties between India and the US continue to strengthen, significant opportunities are emerging to provide greater access to capital for India's fast-growing entrepreneurial ecosystem and open up significant investment opportunities for India's 1.4 billion citizens," said Mr Knight.

"At Nasdaq, we have a unique vantage point into this dynamic and dedication to advancing economic progress for all. As a bridge between corporates and investors, we hope to facilitate better access to capital for Indian companies while bringing greater transparency and investment opportunities to Indian investors," he added.

An intricate Matha patti along with a traditional but light necklace and matching earrings were her choice of accessories for the night.
